Ok guys and gals, I want to buy and put on a trd pro skid plate. I’m also going to be doing a lift in the near future. Is there a magic amount of lift that I can do and still keep the trd pro plate, or do I have to remove the plate with any lift at all? I’ve been reading posts about people having to remove their plates because they lifter their truck.

Also anybody have a pro plate laying around that they want to get rid of? :)

I think that it is not so much how high you lift but what kind of lift you go with. If you are doing a suspension lift (coilovers & UCAs) then you should be able to keep the pro skid. If you go with a bracket lift then this replaces the crossmember and then the pro skid may not work.

the trd pro plate is so so. You should look into a more solid one from an aftermarket company imo.

I did a 3"/2" lift with a 1" front axle drop. I did have to make custom 1" aluminum spacers for the TRD skid plate to get it to fit properly. but when you look at it you cant even tell they are there. You will need a couple of longer bolts also.

Kind of agree, I would not have ordered my truck with one... but it was in the lot with it, so it works for now. I may upgrade at some point, we’ll see.

Mounting hardware and design. The TRD skid is designed to touch the frame, with no gasket material...never a good idea...even with the proper hardware and install procedure, the damn thing still made a bunch of racket. I had to get rubber material to go between the frame and the skid plate...there is a thread on this.

Also, if it ever has to come off, the hardware is critical...and if the tech at the dealer or who ever is working on it (Indy shops wont know the specific hardware mounting details) doesn’t reinstall all the hardware, it will make noise. I had to go and make new aluminum spacers because the dealer tech didn’t reinstall all the hardware...of course it was too late to go back once I figured it out, not to mention it took me removing the plate to figure it out. Toyota wants $90 for the hardware...WTF?

So there you go...save your $350+ bucks...and for oil changes, add a door to your stock plate (there is a thread on this too) and be done.

Oh, if I hadn’t thrown my stock one out I’d swap them and sell the TRD skid.

I already have the RCI skid (haven't had time to installed it yet) so I was just curious to know what was so bad about the TRD Pro skid plate? Thanks for the info.

What is the TRD skid plate made out of steel or aluminum? I know RCI has a steel one and alumunim one just can't decide which one to get? Also does the RCI come with mounting hardware?

Yea the RCI comes with hardware and there should be a selection for a spacer kit if you have a differential drop.

The aluminum from RCI is thicker than stock. If your going to bash your truck and actually drag it over rocks then you want to go steel. Aluminum is for general purpose off roading

I went with the steel...It was cheaper and figured it would take more of a beating then the Aluminum.

I was going to get the steel version because it was cheaper and I figured it would withstand more abuse. If I lived out west that's what I would have done but I'm in the rust belt and I don't do any kind of hardcore off roading so I went with the aluminum version for the weight savings and rust resistance.

So do the normal spacers that come with the diff drop work on the trd skid plate

The differential drop spacers are for the front diff. You would need separate spacers to lower the skid because the differential is lower.

No mine came with 3 other spacers to use on the screws that attach the stock skid to make room for the drop. Was going to put it on my Pro now that my platinum is gone.

Ahh... Id imagine if it bolts up in the same place the spacers would be fine.

It looks like there saying that with a pro skid plate it may need modifications.. I would call toytec and ask. They are pretty helpful.

The RCI aluminum skid is no thicker than the aluminum Pro skid.

The pros that off-road for a living and run races like baja and do the hardest core rock crawling usually use aluminum skids.

Aluminum does not rust and weighs less than steel.

I have not ever had noise or fit problems with my aluminum pro skid. I’ve added shims to the front struts and had the back hardware off for adding the RCI transfer skid, still no problems.

The access door for oil changes is really nice. Both have these.

If you are able to get a better price on the RCI, that would be a reasonable reason to get it.

    Just a few thoughts...
