Double cab with 1200 lb popup PICKUP camper - ~2000# payload with people/gear. Looking at a good deal on a 2015 but it has the 4.6L. Would this be a bad idea for wandering around the Rocky Mountains? Or would the 5.7L be an obviously better choice?

Not towing anything? You're fine. If you plan to tow, get the 5.7.

I can't imagine a 4.6L DC rated at TWR 6800lb being unable to tow a 1200lb pop-up camper anywhere. Single axle without brakes? @ColoradoTJ

This response is ridiculous. The OP was only asking about towing 1200 lbs. You don't need to get 5.7 to tow it. A 4.6L will tow it just fine like anything is hardly there. Everyone wirh a 5.7L says to get a 5.7L no matter what but complain about the fuel mileage or what they can do to improve it.

Oops...popup PICKUP camper - slide in camper, not a trailer. No towing. Probably will be 2000# payload with people, gear, water etc. I plan to add air bags and E load rated tires. My only concern is going over passes here in Colorado.

Payload for 2017 4.6L DC is 1435lb. Check the door sticker on the 2015.

I used to tow a 1000lb trailer w quads on top (close to 1800 total) Indiana to upper Ontario Canada w a 3.3L 2001 xterra 180hp v6. No mountains but no problem towing. No experience w 4.6 but I would think a pop up would be easy.

Edit: oh nm, just saw the added posts about being a pickup.....

If you disagree that’s fine but no need to call it ridiculous then go on a soapbox to lecture the 5.7 owners complaining about mpgs. Get over yourself. Did you see that it’s not a trailer? About 2k loaded down...Hmmm

Im not sure if i would feel any better about a 1200 lb slide in camper in my 5.7 tow package truck. Thats really dang near max capacity without gear/ food/water

Since this is a slide in camper, I would say no. You will be over on payload, regardless of motors or configuration.

So 2k you need a 5.7. Yeah you should get over yourself. Not on a soapbox. Just talking actual sense. You don't need a 5.7 for 2k.

Towed this beast from Mississippi up to New York city area and back last September. Truck was a 4.6L (has since been totaled :( )
Did fine. Had my MR2 in the back with some gear so probably around 6k pounds or so. Wind resistance was the worst thing.

So pulling a pop up you'll be more than adequate with the 4.6L.

Look up the payload capacity for it and get over yourself.

I've had this 1300lb(loaded) pop-up in my 2017 Tacoma TRD for the last couple years. Tacoma has done fine with it. I beefed up the suspension with some ARB gear.

I plan to put it in my new-to-me 2018 4.6l Tundra. I have no doubt whatsoever that it will handle it. Maybe a minimal suspension upgrade. But I bet I can get away with nothing if I wanted to...

I actually can see both sides of the story here. This reminds me of something I learned a few years back when I had My Ram 1500 Hemi and towed a light weight 2k-3k pound camper for a friend that he was selling and we were bringing it to the buyer. My Ram had the 3.92s axle gears which were the best for towing and the 8 speed with a max tow rating of 10,200 pounds if I recall correctly on the rating. We went through the mountains and we were dealing with a nasty headwind and going up the grades were horrible the truck struggled hard core because the camper was acting as a sail against the truck. Just because a tow rating can be X doesn't mean there won't be situations that it will be a huge struggle fest and you wished you had a different truck. If I end up in a market for a camper I am going to look for one that is 5k-6k loaded for piece of mind just because I don't want a repeat of that. I think the 4.6L should in most cases handle that 1200 pound trailer ok though. If I were using it to tow through the mountains I might also want the 5.7 though. All depends on where you tow it.
