I have been letting the dealer do all of the maintenance on my vehicles under Toyota Care (2015 4Runner, 2017 86, 2017 Camry, 2018 Tundra, and now 2019 4Runner), My 2008 FJ Cruiser was bought used at 40K Miles and I did all of my own maintenance, however I logged it on the Toyota App. I have established the accounts for the above listed vehicles and it actually paid off when I sold my 2015 4Runner as the buyer wanted to see all maintenance logs. I just told him about the Toyota app and told him to register the VIN on his app and he would see the maintenance history. He did, and I sold him the 2015 4Runner. Use the Toyota care and get the app.

I recently had all 3 of my Toyotas serviced on the same day. They just happened to be due for OLF at the same time, so me, wife and kids dropped them off and went across the street for dinner while 2 of them received free services and I had to pay for the Camry's since it is out of the free ones.

With the low depreciation and getting 11.2% off plus $3k rebate I will use the Care for my 19 Crew and buy new before the warranty is up; who cares what happens.

Replying to the content of the thread OP.

Yes. I've skipped all the "free" service. I bought 3 new Toyotas from the same dealer in 5 months time and told them each time (after they explained the "free" customer care) that I wouldn't be utilizing that service. But thanks anyway.

I keep all my own records on my own maintenance log, in a vehicle specific paper folder. I don't leave my records to anyone else.

Glad to see in this thread that there are folks who are getting dealer related services that they like and work for them.

There is absolutely no comparison between the vehicle manufacturing plant (and the teams building the vehicles) and the dealer service departments. They are on two different planets.

Because I'm an anal mechanic, I would do my services in between the freebies. I change my oil every 2500 miles. I dump differentials every 10K, with Transfer case dump every 25K and trans flush and filter replacement every 45K. I had the dealer do the free oil changes. But I know and love my dealership and I have a great relationship with the only mechanic that I trust at the dealer. So things always go very smoothly at the dealer when I take the truck in for service. Fluids are cheap compared to a major mechanical failure. I dont mind spending the money. The $100 qt transfer case oil is a bit spendy, and Transmission flush services when you demand Toyota fluid can get a bit spendy, but its a lot cheaper than buying a new transmission or transfer case. And I plan on keeping my truck for many many years.

Agreed. Not even close. If you guys think the oil lube boneheads know what they are doing go back and ask to see their torque wrench. Then ask them what the pan bolt, filter housing and filter cap torque spec is. After you ask those questions I can point you in good directions to purchase your own tools/materials.

Just curious, how do you like the 86?

The Woman was looking at them and thought it might be a fun summer car if finances ever allow it.

I remember calling to schedule one of my free Toyotacare services at the 5k mile interval. I asked what was due, and they said Tire Rotation and Wash, inspect floor mats, and air filter. When I asked if they meant also Oil Change, they said nope that is done every 10k miles. I didn't need to sit for 90 minutes while they rotated tires, so I skipped it.

Oil changes I have done at my favorite local owned mechanic shop. He's got a really nice RCSB Tundra that he moves snow with and uses as a shop truck. Best trusted Toyota owner/mechanic in my book! Plus he has me in and out in way less time than the dealership.

One thing I also noted is that every time I was in the dealership sitting in the waiting area, a sales person always managed to find me just to let me know that I had a beautiful Tundra, and he could sure help me upgrade/trade. I never was able to reach a deal at any point from the closest dealership. always 3-4k higher than others within 120 miles. So, I generally politely told the sales guys that "sorry, I buy from others and just service here sometimes."

going forward, dealer services only recalls and computer updates.

I was planning to have them do the 10K on my new Tundra but now I am re-thinking that. I have had some work done on my Tacoma in the past and a couple of times the service manager seemed nonchalant about what was being done. They just don't listen very well. Once my Tacoma was out of warranty I never went back so they probably don't have the same people there anyway. My Tundra is modified and I am worried if they would properly replace the skid plate and the spacers for the diff drop. Also the socket holes on my wheels will get damaged if you don't use an extension when removing and replacing the lug nuts. I know they won't listen to what they need to do on that as well.

I was using a very trusted Lexus dealer for the maintenance on my GS but the last time I went there to have the coolant flushed The tech overheated the engine because he did not break the air lock when he replaced the coolant. This was an amateur move as any good tech would know to squeeze the hoses or remove the upper block plug to let the air escape. The way I found out was with my dashcam. They did not inform me of this. I kept the video in case I ever have any issues with it and will let the service adviser know next time I return (if I do).

I always add the owner performed maintenance to the Lexus or Toyota site when I do it so they have evidence of it.

I think I will do it myself this time.

    This ^

I have gone to dealerships, I have gone to specialized auto shops. All are only as good as the folks doing the work and quite honestly most people do NOT give a shit. I've had oil leaking after oil changes, tires get loose after rotations, wheel caps fly off and get lost from poor installation and all from different establishments.

It's like customer service, the phone type. How do you make someone who is making $9/hr who sits in a tiny cubicle all day taking calls watching a meter on the wall which measures their progress give a shit. You don't.

I have a friend who is a certified mechanic, the barter program is great.

seriously the guy doing oil change in dealer is an average Joe, not a master mechanic nor ASE certifly.

While I have an appointment in 1.5 weeks for service, I have over 100k and have yet to do fluids on xfer case, diffs, tranny. Betting the truck makes it to 500k with no issues and I run the shit out of it.

Good luck with that. The additives in oil break down a lot sooner than the recommended service intervals. The idea is to get you to replace the truck at 100K. Anything beyond that and you are cheating the manufacturer our of your money on a new car sale. That is just the way they look at it. So by replacing fluids on a basis where they do not begin to break down, you are pushing the odds in your favor to have a long component life.

This is all a myth. Blackstone Labs analysis has consistently shown that engine oil change intervals can be extended to upwards of 13,000 miles without degradation of the lubricating qualities of the synthetic oil being tested.

Following Toyota recommended service intervals will assure a very, very long life of the drivetrain into the several 100k miles. This is my fourth Toyota, second bought new. All (except my current Tundra, not old enough yet) enjoyed non-degrading life spans of several 100k miles each. My 1985 Supra had a 10,000 mile oil change interval which I followed up through 250k miles without a hitch.

It's not much of a myth depending on where you live and how you drive etc.

This info it taken directly from the owners manual: "For customers who primarily drive their
vehicle under any of the listed Special Operating Conditions, the motor oil and filter should be replaced at 5,000 miles or six months, REGARDLESS OF THE OIL USED (OR CERTIFICATION OF THE VEHICLE)."

The special conditions are just towing, stop and go traffic, dirt roads/off-road, and long periods of time idling. So, under "ideal" conditions you can go 10k miles, but oil is cheap and a new motor is not. Cheap insurance and peace of mind

To the OP- I am skipping the dealer freebees. Just rather change the oil and rotate the tires myself and know it's done right.

I just had my very first service today at 5K miles. I know they didn't change the oil, so I wondered what they actually did. Seems the adjusted the floor mats and checked the tires. Why does my maintenance light come on at 5K if they don't change the oil?

At my age, very glad to take it in for a tire rotation. Never had any problems and way easier than if I tried to do it.

Will they hand torque your lugs to 80 lb-ft so you can get them off in an emergency? Or do they air gun blast them to the nut busting zone (usually ~ 140 lb-ft)?
