I'm new to the group and still nosing around in the different forums when I saw what you had written below.
"I've been on top of mount Suribachi with 3rd BN 3rd Mar in 1984. Looking over the side I couldn't even imagine the perseverance and courage it took to take that mountain. Semper Fi marines"
What got my attention was who you were with, I was with 'L' company, 3rd Bn, 3rd Mar. Div. at Camp Schwab, Okinawa, in 1963, give or take a few months. I was never at Iwo Jima, but my Uncle was, He was the first of 5 Marines in my family that span that time period up to Korea and including Viet Nam.
This post is a couple of years old So I'm hoping you see it.

In 1985 I was a Marine and deployed to Iwo Jima to take part in what was the 40th reunion of the Marines and the Japanese that fought against each other. It was an experience I’ll never forget. They had a ceremony and I had the privilege to speak with some of the
Marines that fought there. Truly the greatest generation in my opinion! I took a lot of pictures. Here’s one of what’s left of the big cannon they had dug into the side of Mount Suribachi, the other is a monument on top of Mount Suribachi. Thanks OP for sharing, having been there I take great interest in seeing and reading the stories of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Semper Fi0A22934E-D97F-4047-A83A-1B00E27271A5.jpg

Great thread. My grand father also fought in WW2. Although he fought in the south pacific, it was Wake island that he found himself at. He was there when the Japanese landed, and was subsequently captured, though gramps took a few names before that occurred :infantry:. He was a POW for a little over two years, but was released when the war ended. Afterwards, when I was a kid, he would take me trout fishing on occasion. We would stop at cafe s and eat lunch, and he would always order chicken fried steak. One day I asked him; what s the best steak you ever ate. He said it was a moldy piece of meat he fished out of the mud. I didn t understand, and just thought he was joking. It wasn t until later, when talking to my grand mother, that she told me about a few experiences gramps told her about concerning the POW camp he was kept. It was there that he found the steak on the muddy floor of a hut the Japanese stored food in. He smuggled it to his hooch, and managed to cook, and eat it. It was then that I understood why a moldy piece of meat could be the best. From that two years in captivity, he became so malnourished his stomach became permanently bloated. So much respect for what those vets endured, and ultimately protected.

That is a fantastic story from the Greatest Generation. There were a million of them, and almost all have been lost as family members and memories die. Thanks for sharing @Netmonkey .

I don't know if you've had any luck with organizations interested in helping you preserve your grandfather's legacy, but an institution that might be very interested would the Nimitz Pacific War Museum in Fredericksburg. You should contact the curator there and gauge their interest level. If they have space, maybe your grandfather's photos would get their own display, with credits to the family. If you live in Georgetown, and your cousin lives in Fort Worth, your family is probably native born...so much better to honor the Texans that served.

Another possibility is the Bullock Museum in Austin, but the Greatest War is just a adjunct there to the entire Texas history.

I never served in any US armed forces. But man, that is some solid history. Amazing what such young men and women did for the the good ol' US of A, back then. Now there are the super intelligent people that want to defund the police and go in the opposite direction of our past.

Every time I see a vet, even a total stranger, if he/she is wearing a Vietnam hat or a Korean hat, any war article of clothing. I make a point to walk up and say thank for your service. Some one did that to my dad at home depot a few months ago and it literally made me think what dad went thru when he was just 22. bring shivers down my spine.

Thank you for your grandpas service, God Bless the Red White and Blue!

Old but thought I would respond to it anyway. If the grandson hasn't already he might want to contact the LSA (Landing Craft Association). No doubt they would love to have copies of some of those photo's. The Landing Craft Memorial was opened about eight or nine years ago, I did a couple of interviews of 90+ year old crew members to have their interviews put in the Memorial. One LC-I from Iwo and another who served on an LCFF (Landing Craft - Flagship Flotilla). According to the LCFF guy they came up with the LCFF's shortly before Okinawa, and it was the stupidest decision made by the Navy during WWII. Each Flotilla had its own Flagship with it's own Flotilla Commander. The Navy decided to go with the LCFF and put every Commander on one Flagship (LC-FF) so that if the Japanese were able to sink the LC-FF they would kill all of the Commanders at one time.

The Landing Craft Association has a Facebook Page, or used to, I havent been on FB for 6 or 7 years, and a Website for points of contact.

As someone else mentioned, the best post I have seen on this forum. Kudos and great respect to your grandfather, and all those who fought at Iwo.
Thankfully because of the men & women like this we can enjoy our freedoms today. Many more should see this, and be humbled. Our country needs a serious kick in the ass, and many need to get over their entitlement!
Thank you for posting this, just reading & viewing this brings a tear to my eye.
