It should live. I can always tell if a tree was struck if it has a wound that swirls around the tree. Like a barber shop pole. Have an arborist come look for cracks in the wood below the surface.

    Still rolling stock baby....
I had a tree on my place get struck about 17 years ago. It survived. I will take a pic when it’s light out of the tree and the spot that blew out. It’s healed over.

This goes through the tree, almost looks like the exact opposite side of the tree. Bark blown off both sides.
Thanks for the positive vibes, not a whole lot I can do at this point because it's not even my tree. Guess we'll see later this summer if it survives.

Wow, crazy! This happened too at my parents house years ago, I stayed home from school as I was sick, there was an Ash tree about 10 yards from my sister's window, there was a light rain in the morning and it grew heavy minutes later, then 3 super loud bangs as if someone shot off a gun right next to me, that tree was struck by lightning and ripped half of the side of the tree bark, next day my dad and two uncle's uncle's chopped it down, then dad hired someone to dig out, theirs an Oak tree now in place

Gods way of telling you not to skip school? Kidding.

Lightening is no joke. Lost a monster of an Oak tree years ago and it blasted all the bark off.
