Stick with stock or TRD?

For a while now I’ve been contemplating whether or not I should get the TRD exhaust or stick with stock. I’m sure most would find this strange, but I’m not really trying to hear the exhaust much at all. I’m fine with how stock sounds. I don’t mind a slight more rumble when at WOT but that’s the only time. On the other hand, I absolutely love the way the TRD looks. I would have just the tail pipes if I could (is that even possible?). So now I’m looking for y’alls suggestion as to what I should do? Get the TRD or just stick with stock?

Being that I have a platinum, it came with the chrome single tip. I love the look of dual.

Thats good to hear. I have an intake as well and I don’t mind some noise at high rpm/WOT, it’s just regular street and highway driving. I would rather be able to hold a conversation or listen to music than asking people to repeat themselves because of the exhaust.

Is it quite enough to where my wife wouldn’t even notice that I got an exhaust under normal driving conditions?

I am still running stock, but because I lowered the rear end - the tailpipe is gone so it has a little more detectable rumble. I have looked at several different aftermarket cat-back mufflers, but I really don't like anything that sounds as loud as those.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
I got the TRD exhaust and love it. The sound is just right if you want a mellow rumble at idle and WOT. Of all the exhaust systems I've owned over the years, it is my favorite. It sounds like it will fit perfectly with what you want. You won't regret it!

I have been thinking the same thing just don’t want to rattle windows or yell at my passenger while cruising 75 on the freeway.

Question on the TRD exhaust - what does it sound like when cruising down the highway at 70 mph or so? Not coasting, but maintaining a steady speed? How does the sound compare with the stock exhaust in that scenario? I am interested in the TRD exhaust, but am concerned the sound would be fatiguing on long trips.

For some reasons I feel like a lot of the videos on YouTube are deceiving. One video it sounds quiet and in the next it seems loud. It’s just a lot of money to be based on the videos. Anyone have the Dirty Deeds TRD replacement 5x24, the mild version? Is that quieter than the TRD mufflers? It’s a lot of money for that and still needing the tail pipes too. But could be worth it if I was getting exactly what I was looking for.

I am considering the same. I don't like loud exhaust but I do like the dual exhaust look. I would rather a quieter sound than stock but have not done it as I cannot find anything off the shelf that will be quiet enough. I may need to have a custom exhaust made up but I am afraid that I may lose power by doing that.

Hopefully someone who has done this will chime in.

I've had both and it sounds like the stock exhaust. The only time I really notice a difference is romping on the throttle. The only thing I will say is sometimes when you are in final gear, to me, it has a resonance like if you had a rear window open and driving and get that pressure noise. Mine sounds like that around 50 and barely in the throttle.

In my experience, the only time the TRD exhaust is noticeable on the highway (other than WOT) is when you're maintaining speed between 50mph and low 60s mph in 6th gear on an incline. You do get a bit of a deep fluttering resonance, but it's not terrible. Very quiet on level roads and downhills in that range.

70mph+ cruising is pretty quiet - even on inclines in 6th.

I don't know why, but in my experience the exhaust does need 2K to 3K miles to break in. Maybe the packing material compresses with repeated heating and cooling cycles. I've read something about materials bonding together. But it definitely gets smoother and mellower with some miles compared to brand new.

Brand new it was love/hate. But now with 6K miles on it, I really like the exhaust. Great tone. Louder than stock, but not obnoxious.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. I’m very happy with the sound of my TRD exhaust. Has some slight drone at low highway speeds, but sounds great when you get on it and quiet when driving like a grandma.

The TRD exhaust is awesome. Its quiet when cruising but its got a good rumble when you get on it. I was worried at first it would be annoying but after 12,000 miles I'd say its the best of both worlds.

I’m in the same boat as the OP trying to figure out if I want to go the TRD exhaust route or Dirty Deeds. Dirty Deeds has some great options and the fact that I would save some cash is pretty enticing!!!

The Dirty Deeds TRD exhaust seems like it would cost quite a bit more than the regular TRD exhaust. But I like a lot of the things I’m hearing about it. I wish there was someone who could chime in about the quietest version of the dirty deeds exhaust.

The TRD exhaust is definitely the way to go if you want the dual tip look and just a bit of rumble when accelerating. At idol you will barely notice a difference from the stock exhaust. For example, I had the same concern about the TRD exhaust being too loud because I work shift work and park in the garage at home. I can come home from work pull into the garage which is next to my boys rooms and not wake anyone up.

On the freeway maintaining speed, cruise control it is not noticeable so much so my talks to me the whole trip no matter where we are going. Did I mention she is a therapist and talking is her gig! So why did I not get a loud exhaust? But anyway the price is high but it is well worth the sound and look. I will also give you a bit more low end torque that feels noticeable to me especially when you are running the stock wheels, tires and suspension. Just my two cents.

Curiously, Keith at Dirty Deeds made the following statement:

"With stock manifolds, no matter what you do, a single exhaust built correctly will always make more low end torque than a dual exhaust."

People were experiencing torque loss while at speed as opposed to a dead stop. Now I'm first to confess I don't know much about exhaust... and Keith isn't God, but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt since it's his craft.

These exhausts look and sound good. I'd buy one if Toyota had another 40% off sale. 1k is steep.
If I was to purchase a DD, it would be the full system.

The factory set-up is basically a Y-pipe configured within a huge muffler, and then a single tail-pipe. The Dirtydeeds system is two small mufflers followed by a Y-pipe, and then a single tail-pipe. I guess one could also build a Y-pipe feeding into a single muffler, and follow that up with a single tail-pipe. 2 3/4" pipe seems to work best with stock manifolds.

Definitely recommend the 8 inch from Dirtydeeds........took it up steep climb yesterday for first time in a while coming up to Shaver lake in California and at 3000 RPM doing 65 to 70 exhaust was noticeably there but not enoying like others and when cruising not even heard

I really don’t want a single exit setup. If that were the case I would just keep my stock on. Really wanting the dual exit setup.
