I came back from my local dealership and the service manager told me that if I wanted they could turn off the TSS for me. Has anyone else done this?

I did see some options in the Techstream. Just left them alone since I had not had a chance to look through manual. Prob should have had them turned off.

I know a guy who took the warning stickers off his lawnmower deck. He also bypassed the seat safety switch. One day he got off it on a hill, slipped, and stuck his foot under the deck and lost some toes. Sued the lawnmower MFG because it didn't have warning stickers. They settled.
What you gonna do if you or someone driving your truck hits someone and the safety feature that may have prevented or lessened the damage/injuries is found to have been deactivated on purpose???
I have had my 2018 since February of 2018. It's lifted and I tow with it occasionally. It has only acted up once and that was due to a giant butterfly hitting right in front of the camera. Not worth the liability to me.

I have owned my 2018 since April of that year. I have heard people have legitimate issues, but it seems pretty rare.

There does seem to be a fascination with disliking the TSS because of perceived defects, or the insistence that they are unwanted nannies.

I see the TSS features as one more step forward in driving safety.

Remember, there is a large number of people out there who refuse to wear a seatbelt or a motorcycle helmet because they have a toddler’s tantrum in response to their own perception that “other people are trying to control me”.

If your TSS is malfunctioning, get it fixed, or you can choose instead to disable it. But don’t do it out of a lack of reasoning.

They can “disable” it. But you have to sign a liability waiver, waiving Toyota of basically any safety feature on the truck. In turn you are left with two warning indicators permanently on the dash indicating a PCS malfunction. My TSS has worked fine for nearly my year of ownership. My truck is lifted and my dealership didn’t even give me any hassle with the recent recall on the sensor when I brought it in 2 days ago.

I agree that I do not like some of this stuff, but if you are at fault in an accident and someone gets hurt, you will get sued into the ground for having a safety feature turned off.

Respectfully, this is apples to oranges in my opinion. TSS is a free market feature. You can chose to buy another vehicle if you really want to. Mandatory use of safety features (like seat belts and helmets) by the government is not a free market choice and does not affect the safety of other drivers. I thought we were supposed to be free? Ya know, do what you want as long as you are not infringing on someone else's rights? Maybe the argument could be had that TSS could increase the safety of other drivers, but seat belt and helmet use does not. I wear my seat belt almost everywhere I go. That is my choice. Sorry for jumping way off topic.

Wow some people received their legal degree online through forums. My question was straight forward.

To play devils advocate- modify your truck (lifting, sound system, HID lights , bumpers)all could be found liable.

Best thing you can do is enjoy life and have proper insurance coverage (umbrella policy) so that stuff doesn’t really matter in the .00001 percent chance of happening.

I'm pretty sure you can turn all that stuff off from the in-dash menu.

Can anyone tell me why the panic button wouldn't be activated on my new truck? Is that normal? Had to go into Techstream to make it work.

I won't ever be accused of Chicken Little syndrome. If it bothers me, I will get rid of it. Toyota has deeper pockets than I do. You can't sign away liability in their case.

I just had my first service done and they informed me that because I modified the suspension and went with larger tires, they are required to turn TSS off when it leaves the dealer; however, in the same sentence she then said that I can turn it back on as soon as I get in the truck - and I did. So it is a simple in-dash menu option and it doesn't come back on every time you start the truck. Also, with a 1.9" level in front, stock rear, and 275/70/18 tires, TSS still works fine for me. Hasn't stopped an accident but has come on once or twice when I was too close to someone that was turning in front of me.

TSS is reason I bought 2017 when I did. Not to mention one of the largest new model price increases. Only feature I would like is BSM but not sure that I would trust it considering watching it work on other vehicles. I rarely use cruise.

This is great info. Thanks for the update. I haven’t done my level yet, but will be doing it soon. I’d rather them just disable it and be done with it. My truck has 4000 miles on it, and the TSS has screamed at me twice with no reason. A car several hundred yards in front of me doesn’t warrant a safety feature. I know how to use my brakes. Don’t need a computer to do that for me.

Just realized you can turn off LDS and PCS using the steering wheel buttons and the instrument panel menu. (Far right menu selection) The cruise control safety feature you have to over ride by long pressing the cruise button when you turn cruise on. The other two stay off. If you really want them off, you don't need the dealer.

You can. But the TSS cannot. Have to do it every time you start the truck.

Technically it’s not their truck it’s yours. They can’t modify anything without your permission. Before they bought back my lemon I made it clear that they do not have my permission to change anything on my truck..

Mine keeps failing and a check engine light comes on and totally disables my cruise control. You’ll love this one. When I check the code, I get a code for the MAF sensor.

Do you have to turn off both?

I will go and try holding down cruise button since I can’t use it right now due to TSS sensor “radar” issue
