    Great news!
I should be picking up my "new" Tundra tomorrow! :burnrubber: And here comes the first dilemma with it. It desperately needs new tires. I have been notified by fellow employees that there are different plys that are available. My main concern is that I had hoped that this pickup would be able to haul my 3 horse gooseneck trailer without too many problems. The question is: Should I purchase 10 ply 255/70R18 or 10 ply 275/65R18? The second set is pretty pricey. I really don't want to deal with a blow out under a load. Thank you in advance for any advice that is given.

Probably 275/65. Max load is higher on those if I'm not mistaken.

    Congratulations on your purchase!

Bare with me, I'll get to my point in the end...

Now this is just assuming (we all know what that does), you own a 3 horse enclosed trailer without living quarters. This probably puts you in the 5-5300 lbs empty range. I haven't been around horses in a while, but the last sombitch that stepped on my foot felt like he weighed in around 10000 lbs. lol. But in reality, he was probably 1000 lbs.

So potentially you could have a trailer weight of ~8300 lbs....or a little more.

Let's talk pin weights. Most gooseneck trailers are 15-25% of the trailers weight. GN hitch plate is around 150 lbs.

25% high end of pin weight

    2075 + 150= 2225 lbs

    20%

    1660 + 150= 1810 lbs

15% low end of pin weight.

    1245 + 150= 1395 lbs

Now add your weight and the passengers.

Now go look at the sticker inside your drivers door.

    Which number is greater?

I always put tires on a truck before I sell it too.

That's a lot of calculating and I must thank you for it. I will give it a look and post what I discover. Horses do seem to weigh more when they step on your foot. But you estimate is about right of 1,000 pounds. The seller is a young guy and I don't think that he knows any better. He's also getting married this weekend and has a lot on his mind. We did however get the asking price of $13,500 down to $11,700. That alone will help me budget in some new tires. And a g/n hitch plate... and a new foldable soft top....

How heavy is your GN 3 horse trailer?

Tag on the trailer says gvwr is 5,443kg (12,000lbs.).This is really confusing and I'm not sure how much the trailer weighs exactly. My boyfriends one ton dodge has no problems hauling it. I'm just trying to figure out now if this truck will be able to haul it too.

Legally, no it will not. The 07 Tundra can actually tow more than the new models due to the new federal standards that Toyota adopted in 2010. This is what I was trying to state in my earlier post to you. Your boyfriends dodge is most likely a diesel (70% of all dodges manufactured are) and has the capacity to tow this trailer. If he has no issue with you always borrowing his truck, hell the Tundra is a great buy.

You will be over on a couple things most likely:

Gross Axle weight rating (mainly your semi-floating rear axle)
    Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (truck)
Gross Combined Vehicle Weight rating (truck and trailer weight combined)

If you tow the trailer empty, it will not be a problem since the horse trailer is probably close to what I stated earlier, however your pin weight is going to flatten your truck. If you do in fact buy this truck, better get airbags, up your insurance coverage and may want to look at an umbrella policy.

I speak from experience from a legal standpoint when it comes to limits...and you do not want to be on the wrong side unless you have a money tree out back. Trust me on that one. I have been in a legal battle for going on 3 years now, and starting another one (civil) as of this weekend (high five myself). Personally, I think there should be a training class on what truck ratings are before people blindly go into buying trucks and trailers.

Thank you for insight and advice. We looked at the trailer and decided that it may be too much weight. Even with good tires and some other mods. We will just use his 1 ton dodge to haul it around when necessary. I could probably haul the travel trailer without any issues. I'm just happy that we finally got it home and I can start driving it around town tomorrow.

image.jpg Finally made a decision about new shoes. Got some 10-ply Toyo Open Country A/T's and had Les Schwab put them on.
