I am going to look at a certified pre owned 2018 Tundra SR5 double cab TRD sport. It has a plastic bed liner and aluminum side steps, sill protection and the bed tie down option. The truck has 8k miles on it and was bought and serviced by the same dealer I am going to look at it. Clean one owner car fax also. Only thing it doesn’t have is the NAV from what I can see. The asking price is 36.800. How much can I realistically ask to take off the price? I was thinking If I like it offering that price 36,800 out the door. Assuming taxes are 2,400 that would be what I would be asking for a price reduction. Anyone have any thoughts or experience with buying certified preowned? Is that a good price or can I get a better deal you think?

i purchased our rav4 certified and have been happy with the quality. They really only seem to allow the nicest one's to go certified. The warranty seems to be good although we haven't had to use it yet. Our dealer was able to negotiate the price but definitely used the certified as leverage.

You will probably save more shopping at the end of the month. If they haven't met their sales goals they may be willing to deal. You can use Edmunds car appraisal to get you a good idea of the value and estimate on what they took it in on trade. After that, it's just about sticking to your guns and be ready to walk.
I bought two CPO's in the past and I didn't look at it as an add from my point in negotiating. They played it up, but I told them I assume a 1 yr old low mileage vehicle would be trouble free regardless. Are you telling there might be an issue?

Give them a lowball offer! Find another truck similar in price and compare them to one another. I did this saved 5k and got the truck with fewer miles.

Determine the trucks trade-in value, and work up or down from there.

I think it depends on the dealership. I was able to negotiate 3k off of mine, and they included leather seats, floor mats, and bed liner. It was at the end of 2017 though, so they were probably really trying to get rid of it.

I usually start negotiating at 20% off asking price (which I know is a stretch) and settle on no less than 10% lower. I usually get the deal around 15% off the asking price.
There are a lot of variables that determines where you can go with it. When I bought my son's Camry they had 5 almost identical models and mileage, and all were the same asking price, but they were willing to negotiate different prices on different cars based on what they had given the previous owner as a trade in value, and what they had to put into the cars (for instance some had to get new tires and some traded in with new/good tires). The dealer tries to make a certain target percentage on each car, so if they have bought it for a bargain, they can afford to pass it on to you and still make money.

I would say start with 36k out the door. You can always go up, but you never have the opportunity to go down on your offer.

FYI, Sport package will always come with NAV, so if it does not have it, make sure that it really is a Sport.

Do what I did and ask your financial institution to look up the value on their end. What dealers use to assess value is different than banks/CUs. Once you know what they will finance it for, you have a definite idea of what to offer

You will do better on a new one then a pre owned. There is more room to negotiate on new ones. The prices are so close why aren't you going new?

+1, and use that against them. I did on a Tacoma and when they started whining about what they paid I said fine I will look elsewhere. I said find me one with minimal add ons and I will consider. They came back with something about 18% off which on a Tacoma was real good.

You can also look at carmax for pride comparison. They don’t haggle but do have a lot of cars all over the country for price comparison.

Just got back from 2 dealers. I stopped at the dealer with the CPO 18 Tundra and it is driven by the manager and now they are selling it. I made them an offer of 35k out the door and they pretty much laughed at me. They wrote it up and handed me their best deal which was 40,501. Oh well moving on. I then asked them for a OTD price on a new one and with all options I want including a tri fold tanneeau cover and their price was a cash price of 45,987 Next dealer I went to which was my local dealer gave me an OTD cash price of 45k. Those prices are with the 3k rebate from Toyota for a cash deal. Add that 3 k back on if I chose 0 percent financing. I live in southern Connecticut and I have no idea how some of you are getting the deals claimed. While I hope you are they sure are not in this state. I am going to try to get a deal on a new one now.

If you can get a rate of about 3.5% or below you might take the cash especially if you plan to pay off early. Break point on mine with $1500 cash back was 1.75% but I put $6k down. Run the amount and terms through a finance model to get your break even point.

I bought two from Hartford Toyota and got $5000 off in 2017.

Check prices at Prime Toyota in Boston it will be worth the drive. I bought the wifes 4runner and saved $5000 off sticker.

    This is why.
Nationally, we are among the worst in "getting a deal" like others are getting. Go to "WOW"... Toyota ofWallingford, they will be absolutely fair, maybe not the cheapest overall deal on price, but certainly a more trust worthy and reputable dealership.

Don't be afraid of shopping 200 miles away.

Hop on car gurus and find the truck you want within 200 miles or more. Send them all a request for price, throw it all in a spread sheet. Once you have the prices, work with the best 5 dealers and pit them against each other, telling them how much more they need to move, also be up front about your intentions. I was able to get almost 9k off our 2018 Seqouia TRD Sport this way. Took about 3 weeks, but worth it.

Car gurus. Definitely do at least 200 mile search. I looked for about three months before I got what I was looking for. I searched a couple states away and ended up finding mine two hours away. Good luck to you.

$45k OTD is just their first offer. There is always room for negotiation after that. To be honest with all the options you have added that is not a bad OTD price. My Sport had a sticker price of $49k so with tax, tag, title it would have been low $50s OTD and I ended up getting it for about $45k OTD. So, it is not bad. But you can go back and tell them you looked at your budget, and with insurance and other blah, blah, blah, expenses you really can't do more than $43,500 (for example) and then just sit there and see what the say. If they budge, good, if not, $45k OTD is not a bad price. Buy the truck and enjoy it.

OTD prices will vary state to state because of TT&L. Concentrate on the sale price before TT&L.
