Insurance is the cheap part for me, $78 a month for full coverage and high liability low deductible. The tax is crazy here in CT, I mean property taxes on a car? Wtf

Sounds like AZ is a pretty sweet deal then. I just paid my Tundra tags last week which came in a hair over $600 (included $25 fee for personalized plates). My insurance is roughly $100/mo for full coverage. Besides tags and insurance it's just gas and maintenance costs for me.

Not worth it for a spare. If you can get that ac working for $50 flip it. If you do buy it and end up scrapping it then lets take it out to the desert for some stress relief and taget practice first!!

If I remember right they’re good for coils going bad.

And also good for losing compression.

For $500 I might give it a shot. You could probably drive it a year or two and sell it for $500-1000.

The PT Cruiser is quite possibly the ugliest vehicle to hit the road in a long time. Save your money.

My parents had one...stick shift ironically. I drove it a while back in high school and beat the shit out of it. throttle blippin, rev matchin down shifts. What I learned is that a lot of dodge neon parts fit on it so it was easy to find shit for it. Pretty sure its still running...dad sold it to a neighbor who then sold it to his daughter.

So for $500 , why not.

Equivalent to my parents passing down a silver 1986 Subaru GL Hatchback nicknamed the silver bullet (quite the opposite).
I’ll never forget pulling out of the HS parking lot every day and trying to get a running start up the mediocre hill on the way home. The squirrels could barely pull the thing going 50mph up it....one time I managed 51mph.....meanwhile the entire girls soccer team flew by me in their econovan loaded.
Please, for the love of God.....do not pass down the ugliest car in the world to your kids.

For reference, this is exactly what mine looked like but this is in white. I even had the ski racks. :eek2:

I had a Tacoma that needed warranty work. They gave me a rental car. Yep, a PT cruiser. I hopped in, felt my confidence and swagger get sucked right out of me and for the first time in my life understood why people get limousine shaded glass.
I’ll couldn’t do it. I got out, pulled my balls back down, and told them I would rather walk than drive that POS.

I don't read anywhere that the CEL was cleared, so maybe the plugs fixed the issue & the light is 'legacy' at this point.

Well....just wanted to give an update. I decided not to pull the trigger and buy the PT Cruiser for $500. The main reason was that we're kind of running out of space at the house to fit everything we have now. I think it would have made a cheap spare vehicle, although not the most appealing vehicle to drive. After all the votes came in 72% of you guys thought it was a bad idea, probably some truth to that. Oh well...

Some kid will learn a lot of valuable lessons on that car.

I would only buy it for what you could get back out the scrap metal price.

We had a PT cruiser for about a week one time as a rental car when my wife wrecked her 4Runner, it was the biggest POS, I have ever driven. It was only a year or two old and it felt like it was going to fall apart. You couldn't pay me to drive one.

It's till MOPAR. Shelf life is exceeded at 2.5 years from showroom. If you want to bury money into something (continuously), buy a rock stock SR 5 Tundra and re-make it into a TRD PRO version. At least you will be on the road sooner and longer than if you sunk the cash into the PT Cruiser.

Its nice to have a beater car you don't really care about, park it in tight spaces and not care if it door dings, can you jump a PT cruiser? for $500 it might be worth finding out.
