I'm still in the midst of my Audio system mods, but I'm already thinking about the next mod...Video. I want to be able to display video from my iPad or iPhone on my Navi Display - and I want to be able to do it without wiFi tethering. I also want "anytime" rear camera video. I think I'll also wire up the option for front camera video since seeing over that huge hood and properly judging bumper-to-obstacle distance can be difficult. So a front camera has been added to the mod list.

I haven't worked out the entire solution yet, but step one is complete; acquire the Apple Digital AV (HDMI) Adapter. 49 bucks at your local Apple store. Tested it out this evening, I can watch YouTube or any other video signal being displayed on my phone on my TV.

    IMG_2121.jpg

I still need to track down the schematic for the rear panel of the Head Unit. Anybody have this??? I don't believe a vehicle motion defeat will be needed since the backup video already works while the vehicle is in motion. (EDIT: VIM bypass is required and is included in my design). I just need to know the right pins to tap into for component audio and video and then run the various video feeds through a selector switch in the cab.

    More to come...

OK... I've finished the first draft design/schematic and sourced all the parts. I need to see if I can find some alternate suppliers on a few items, but at least I have a source for everything I'll need.

    Here's the current functionality:
    1. Baseline design assumption: don't cut into factory harnesses. I'll use two adapter harnesses (J135 and J136) to keep all the original wiring pristine.
    2. Three video inputs; Rear cam, Front Cam, and iPad/iPhone.
    3. One switch to select Front or Rear Cam on demand, a second switch to turn on/off iPad Video/Audio (Alternate thought is a single three-position rotary switch)
    4. iPad Video has priority over Front/Rear select, but shifting into reverse will always override any video switch selection and show the backup cam video.
    5. Selecting iPad also routes iPad audio into the aux input path, dis-connecting the factory aux input jack while selected. I believe this will activate the aux audio option on the HU audio source screen. However, this may have to be changed a bit because I just realized that unless the HU logic automatically selects the aux audio when it detects a signal, the cam video screen will prevent access to any of the other HU Menus. Hmm, well that's why they call it R&D.
    6. I'm also thinking about adding a Digital Video Recorder for the front cam... That would be an easy add after the fact.
I'm going to think on this a bit. I'm not sure if I like the current design hierarchy.

What do y'all think? I'm interested in how others would want these functions to operate.

    Progress!

Working on Rev. 2 of the design. Pardon the technical details, they might be a little hard to follow without the schematic, but I'm kinda using this thread as my research notebook and the schematic is still in work.

I'm learning more about the HU function and still have some theories that I need to test. If it turns out like I think it will, the mod will be easier/cheaper than my Rev. 1 design. I made a measurement tonight that confirmed one of my suspicions; the rear camera is always powered on. I'm guessing this was designed to keep the camera "warmed up" at all times; preventing any power-up delays to the video feed when Reverse is selected. What this also tells me is that once the mod is done, there should be no problems monitoring the rear feed anytime for as long as desired... no need to worry about over-heating the cam.

There is a 4-pin connector feeding the tailgate camera at a harness junction (XR1) under the bed just forward of the rear bumper. From my measurements, I found the camera is powered by 6 volts coming from HU J136, Pin 11. XR1, Pin 2 indicates 6 volts in both Park and Reverse. So the camera is always on and the 12V reverse discrete (HU, J135, Pin 2) is used to activate the video display when Reverse is selected. This is an important detail because it means I don't have to control the reverse cam power in my "anytime" video mod. I simply need to provide the 12v reverse discrete to the HU! I think this means I'll ultimately be able to get the 3 video feeds I want using a simple $2 relay rather than the $30 three-way video switch that was in my Rev.1 design. Time will tell.

OK, I've finalized part of my Video Mod design. I've been researching the Entune HU and I believe I've finally got it all figured out. My video mod will now be accomplished in two parts. I call my first mod FRAC, or Front/Rear Anytime Camera. It utilizes a SPDT (on-off-on) rocker switch to select the Front or Rear Camera. Maybe something like this... (EDIT: The final design did not use this switch because sadly it is too big for the standard Tundra switch receptacle)
    Cam Switch.jpg

The camera display, when selected, will override all other Entune HU display functions but the HU will continue with it's normal audio function (just like having the gear selector in Reverse). If the Forward camera happens to be on and the shifter is placed in reverse, the reverse camera video will override the forward until the shifter is moved out of reverse.

Here's my FRAC design schematic (Updated: See Diagram in later post)

I was able to purchase Jumper harnesses for both J135 and J136, so there will be no cutting into the factory harnesses. I won't be installing the mod for a week or two because there other projects lined up in the way, but it's good to have the design complete and all the parts in hand. I can now start wiring up the jumper harness mods.

My second Mod will send any Audio/Video feed from my iPhone or iPad to the Entune HU. Selection of this function will be through the Entune on-screen Source select menu. I haven't drawn up this mod yet, but it's pretty straighforward so I'll be working on it soon.

i would be super interested in the "FRAC" setup. I would assume you'd put an override so no matter what position the button is in, putting it into reverse shows back up camera?
    That would be awesome.
I wonder where i can mount a front camera to be super inconspicuous...

Yes as I stated above; "If the Forward camera happens to be on and the shifter is placed in reverse, the reverse camera video will override the forward until the shifter is moved out of reverse."

As the schematic shows, the 12 Volt Reverse discrete is connected through D2 in parallell to the video selector switch. So when you shift into reverse the switching relay coils will energize no matter what position the video selector switch is in; routing the rear camera video to the HU via J136.

Here's an example of the camera I bought... 30 bucks...Frontcam.jpg

Finished my Audio mods today, so I can start focusing on the FRAC mod. I have gathered most of the components I'll need. I just need to choose/buy the camera select rocker switch and the Video in-Motion (VIM) bypass switch.

Here's my pile o' stuff so far... fun times ahead!

Between the Holidays and colder weather, I've slowed a bit on the mods. But today was nice and I had a few minutes so I decided to mount my front camera. It mounts in the Toyota logo on the front grill.
    IMG_2274.jpg

There is no easy access behind the installed grille... so it had to come off. I installed the camera and then routed the power/video line to the passenger side of the grill. I used the same zip-tie anchors that I used for my audio amp installation. They will keep the cable secure and prevent it from flopping around behind the grill.

    IMG_2275.jpg

Pretty simple and the camera is pretty unobtrusive...especially with the blacked-out badging.

    IMG_2276.jpg

I reinstalled the grill and temporarily tied off the camera harness in the engine bay.

I'll be routing the line through the firewall boot on the passenger side. Just like the one on the driver's side, it has a provided "nipple" for mods. That will make this routing very easy.
I'll be picking up accessory power for the camera inside the cab. Haven't decided exactly where yet.

Thanks for the link, Stig. But even if I wanted to spend $239 on the beatsonic product, it wouldn't do everything I am doing with this mod for about a third of that cost. Not to mention the enjoyment of figuring out and designing the mod.

Updated and combined my FRAC design with a design to enable Aux AV inputs from iPad, iPhone or any other composite AV source. It will activate the "hidden" AV source option on the ENTUNE display.

I started the Y-harness fab today. There are three harness assemblies that will be modified and inter-connected to create the final mod harness.

    First the J135 28-pin harness...
    IMG_2285.jpg

    ... then the J136 24-pin harness...

    IMG_2287.jpg

... and finally, the relay harness assembly...

    IMG_2289.jpg

Adding in the diodes and the camera RCA connections and making the other required interconnections yields the FRAC harness...

    IMG_2290.jpg

If I wanted to stop at the FRAC functionality, this would be the final Y-harness configuration. However, I will be adding in the AV (iPhone Mirroring) function as well. So there are a few more mods required on the J135 harness. I'll hopefully get those finished tomorrow.

    Getting closer...

Finished the FRACAV harness today. Lots of splicing and soldering. I also made a few design tweaks.

    IMG_2292.jpg

    Tasks remaining:

Install Front/Rear switch and VIM bypass switch in cab.
Route Front camera video line and power lines from engine bay, through the bulkhead, to the HU.
Pick location and Install iPhone AV chain (Digital AV Adapter, HDMI cable, HDMI to AV converter, AV cable to FRACAV harness)

    Getting closer!
