Any of my fellow LEER owners out there running a roof-top tent on their camper shell? I'd really like to have one for obvious reasons, but I'm a bit worried about the weight capacity of the load bars and topper. From what I have read LEER lists the shell capacity at 250 lbs., and with a tent weighing close to 100 lbs. or more....well you get my concern.

I would surely not attempt to transport a load that exceeded 250 lbs. on the roof, but in a non-moving static position I'd think it could support more. Looking for some real-world feedback or past experiences...

Did you ever end up putting the tent on your shell? I’m in a similar situation

Still have not installed a tent as of this writing. However, I see folks all over Cyber World doing it. Obviously LEER is not going to sign off for liability concerns. Still would like some real word feedback from Tundra brethren. Thanks!

Well. I just got back from a 3 day overland trip with an Rtt strapped to my Leer topper. 80 mph bombs through desert roads with lots of whoops and washboards. No damage to topper.

    FYI from A.R.E

as I have an ARE MX

    WEIGHT RATINGS

1.A.R.E. does not have a published weight rating or warranty any weight rating except on the HD Series (550lbs). NON-HD units we do not recommend over 200lbs evenly distributed.

2.All A.R.E. fiberglass caps can withhold the weight that the rack and/or truck is rated for. “How much can your product hold?” “Please consult your truck manufacturer’s center of gravity as well as the weight rating of the rack you will be using in conjunction with our cap.”

a.Essentially, our caps can hold what any rack supplier will rate

    3.All A.R.E. aluminum caps have a 200lb weight rating.

For example, the Yakima Core Bar & Jetstream have a 165lb & 220lb weight rating on their cross bars (can be found on Yakima’s site). If a customer is inquiring about putting a tent on their cap, it has absolutely nothing to do with what our cap can hold and everything to do with what the crossbars can hold. Therefore, in this example, the Yakima Core Bar is a 165lb rating and if they wanted to add a 200lb tent to it, they would be over the “rating” of the rack. The customer should speak to Yakima (or whatever rack they are going to use) to find out if the product can work with a tent system.

Again, A.R.E. has no written warranty on weight ratings – any added weight to the top of our products is always the customer’s liability.

Interesting. I called ARE back in 2019 and the person I spoke to said there should be no issue with my V series shell holding a tent. I wasn't brave enough to try it though as my shell is very old at this point.

I've always wondered why there isn't a company that sells an internal rack for a topper that struts out to the bedsides like RTT racks but braces the top of the camper shell. I know if I was in the offroad welding business, I would certainly design one for all the overlanders with camper shells. I've been looking for something like this since I had my Leer. Of course, this is someone who knows nothing about welding and structural support engineering. LOL.

I checked out on the website to see shipping calculator and it said to Los Angeles CA was $206. I might sleep on this. I'm gonna try and reach out and see if they have a US distributor.

No US distributor. . Oh well still might be worth it for 500 bones shipped. The good thing is that if you already have rails on your topper, as I do, then this unit could probably tie in to those support hardware and no need for drilling.

Sorry I didnt. I am still debating because I have not purchased a RTT yet but if I do, then this is a no brainer IMO.

I ended up buying the Loadmax system but it arrived too late. I am happy to pass it off to you and save you the shipping headache. Let me know.

I'm going to weld a support frame/cage that will sit in stake pockets and follow the contours of leer 100xr in the corners.

$500+ for Loadmax is insane, you show the picture to any fabricator, who has pipe bender and welder in his shop. Or even DIY.
