Its normal. I knew that Tundra owners were more anal than average, but this is a whole new level, lol.
I first noticed this "phenomenon" back in the 90's on the rear glass of C4 Corvettes.

Polarized sunglasses will let you see that. Has to do with the tempering of the glass. Try it without the glasses. :)

I did receive a response from Toyota on the defect. But prior to that communication, I would like to share what I now know about the defect. It is not a tinting defect, it is in the glass manufacturing process. The moonroof is tempered glass; if the process is under control then the glass is clear and free from defects. This is what you see on the moon-roofs from Ford F150s, GM Sierras and Chrysler products. When the quenching or heat is out of process parameters, the result is Iridescence. This is a confirmed defect from glass manufacturers. But interesting enough, the argument about if it is defective is not the position at Toyota.

What completely shocks me is how Toyota determines if this is a quality issue that they need to remedy. For this category of issue, this is the remedy. This is the conversation the rep had with the Service Directer. “Go check 2-3 other like models and see if the condition exists”. Service Directer “ I told him that they do on the two other units we checked”. The rep said “if that’s the case, then it is a characteristic of the vehicle and replacement of parts or repairs will not be authorized by Toyota”. So...if you bring your vehicle in on warranty and the defect exists on a couple that they check...you own it. Orange peel on paint, dull chrome spots, tread inconsistency.....you don’t have a chance to present your case in the court of reasonableness. That is the lowest quality standard I have ever heard from any manufacturer that I have dealt with in my past. The argument is not that it’s a defect. It’s that they have a quality standard that is so low, everything passes if they can find it in their current inventory.

Round 2 next. In my 15 years in the automotive business I had an opportunity to work with Toyota on product launches and process improvements. We were one of the highest quality award winners with Toyota. I have contacts in the higher levels of the company that if I can’t make headway through the normal channels, I plan to go to them. I can absolutely guarantee I would have lost my position in my company if I had responded this way to the Toyota assembly plant on an inquiry for a quality concern. I am convinced Toyota would not lower their standards and that this is a first level blocking move to get people to accept the poor quality of concerns brought to them. More to come.

I am wondering if the camera lenses used to take the posted pictures showing the effect are polarized?. My aging eyes assisted by prescription clear, non-polarized glasses can not detect the pattern on my 2019.

I can't take a picture of it since the wife is out with it but our 16 Civic coupe has the same thing on its moonroof but it goes away when I take off my sunglasses. Those same spots are on the windows and unibrow of windshield of the coupe as well with the tint with sunglasses on. My Tundra does not have a moonroof but the back windows and rear glass our tinted but I will see if it does the spots with my sunglasses as well. I will post the pics here soon of my Tundra windows.

I dunno, but I suspect the odds are VERY high that your dealer's parts department is going end up azz deep in empty boxes, packing, and rejected moon roofs.

If it has any tint the spots will be there to a point. It also depends on the quality on the tint. Some show more than others but in reality there isn’t anything really wrong with it. You could have them try to replace or maybe switch out the glass if it’s a stock tint on the glass. Good luck with it hope everything comes out fine at the end.

The dark spots are visible with polarized glasses as a result of the glass temper.

Due to regulatory compliance and supply chains, I could see it being perfectly feasible that vehicles of even the same model and age could receive glass from different vendors and therefore show a difference in the tempering pattern.

Some glass is zone tempered, where you can see the marks in only one area of the glass :)

This has nothing to do with window tint. This is a result of the thermal tempering process that makes most automotive glass meet safety standards.

They use air blowers arranged in a matrix to cool the glass after heating. The shape of that matrix determines the shape of the pattern you see in the glass. It is nearly invisible unto you use a polarized filter (like sunglasses) to view it.

I personally would live with those spots as apposed to having it replaced. Good chance they would mess something else up in the process. I would be concerned if it was any other window but not too obvious being a sunroof

Don’t think we have a choice but to live with it unless we want to pay to get it fixed.
But do agree...I really don’t want to get it replaced cause right now it doesn’t leak plus you can only see the spots when the sun hits it just right
