do the 2019 tundra keys have a battery inside them? I want to have a 3rd key made as a spare to stash under the truck somewhere, but thinking the cold Canadian winters would kill a battery quick.

I've actually been wanting to stop by dealer and ask about that same thing.
Just one without battery to unlock doors .
IvI' locked myself several times in the past in my old f250 .
And kept a key in magnetic box.

I just had a basic key made at Home Depot and stashed it under the truck. It won’t start the truck but at least it will get me inside if that’s where I left my keys at.

The H key chip does not require a battery.

3” lift, black step bars, aftermarket wheels, LT305/55R20 was this way when I brought it.
I have a spare key so when we go to the beach I Lock my keys in the truck and have a regular key in a Waterproof Cylindrical Dry Box I wear around my neck (good size for a little cash and truck key) and another in my room in my bag just in case.
I hear to many stories of people loosing their keys in the sand or in the water. But putting one under my truck would be nice also as a extra too.

Toyota dealers will typically charge $5 to make a skeleton key. No chip. I have one zip tied to the frame towards the back of the truck. And I have a chipped spare hidden inside of the truck. I felt better about keeping a cheap “weather proof” key on the outside of the truck.

I keep a basic, non-electronic hid-a-key to get into the truck, and my second electronic key hidden inside the cab. It'll stay dry and warmer there, so less likely to get damaged or drained.

Since I came from a Ford F150 with the keypad on the door I was spoiled about not worrying about locking keys in the truck. I have a local locksmith that does work for me on my office buildings and I called him about a third key, he did an H key to start the truck and a generic unlock the door key for me. The generic key resides in my wallet and the third H key resides hidden inside of the truck. If I ever lose my key ring I am still rolling home and for the records the H key with no buttons was $99.00

Exploring my options as I locked my keys in my truck at work yesterday...........I work an hour and a half away from home, so theres problem #1. The local police in the town I work is one of the few departments that still will try to unlock your car for you. I called them and they gave me the stuff to try to unlock it with a warning that its almost impossible to unlock a Toyota.......they were right. Aside from a few scratchs on the inside door panel I figured out quick that if you unlock it from the inside it will lock back immediately before you can get the door open.

I was fortunate enough that a co worker lives a few minutes from me and I rode home with him and back to work this morning with him and my extra key. This situation got me to thinking that I may not be so lucky next time this happens, so I wanted ideas to try to combat this. Im thinking of getting a couple skeltetons made.....1 for my desk at work, and 1 to keep in my pocket in case this happens again somewhere other than work and away from home.

Does the H key you can purchase on the internet require programming? By the dealer only?

Curious. If the keys were in the truck, how did you lock it? What did you lock it with?

I sometimes lock the doors manually by pushing the lock button on the door instead of the remote fob. Maybe I should stop doing that.

I did this with my Ford *spit* once. When we camp I used to leave my keys in the center console and the truck unlocked. One time though I absent mindedly hit the lock button on the door armrest. Boom, keys locked inside no spare anywhere. Managed to get a flexible piece of metal in and unlock it.

Now I put my keys in my bag in the tent and have a spare hidden on the truck. One perk of 1st gens is the spare will start the truck.

Many years ago I bought a use '70 Dodge (a truck from the days when trucks were trucks and men were men). The windshield washer was a foot pump on the floor and a vinyl bag under the hood. The pump didn't work and I didn't worry about it for a couple of months. One day I decided to see if the pipes were clogged and pulled the cap and tubing out of the bag. Lo and behold, one of the factory keys was tied to it with a string.

The bag was one of these.

I put my spare key in a key lock, like the ones they put on houses for sale. I hide it on my driver side truck bed tie down hook, which is hidden by my crossover toolbox. Only need my combination and keys ready to go and out of view. Also put my spare toolbox key in there too.

I do not know if a locksmith will program an H key purchased elsewhere, best to call around and verify. Also, compare cost of just programming vs purchased programmed key from locksmith
