Question about a garage door. Mine has a big ass spring on the top that I assume reduces the work the electric motor is going to do.

One thing I've noticed is the door will fall closed by itself when released from the carrier that rides on the chain.

Question would be, how difficult would this be to do myself? All I need to do is add more spring tension...

Yes. The springs often weaken over time and need adjustment. They can be very dangerous if u don’t know what ur doing. Unplug opener, lower door, and pull emergency cord to disengage the slide from trolley. If u have what I think, it will be a coil spring wrapped around a rod running the width Of the door with cable running down the door on each end. Attached to the spring there will be a round adjusting cone with several holes and a couple bolts that peg the rod the spring is wrapped around. I recommend searching up some YouTube videos and watching them throughly. The door should be in the closed position when making adjustments. When properly adjusted, the door should stay in place when opened half way and little force is needed to lift it. You will need two 1/2 rods inserted into the slots of the adjustment cone. Two is necessary. One for holding tension while you relocate the other rod in next hole to adjust. Watch the video here. Don’t stand in the path of the rods while adjusting in case a rod slips in your hand. These springs are wound tight and can go ballistic if not careful. Tighten the peg bolts before removing and rods to lock the spring in place.

Let me add you are the only one that knows your mechanical ability. Me, I would tackle this all day, my brother would tear the house down.

Ok, this made sense. I figured that's what needed to be done, I just wasn't sure how special the equipment was, or if there was some type of method/ something I needed to pay attention to.

I’ve never done this myself, but have heard all my life to never mess with garage door springs. Apparently they are lethal if they come loose on you, so best to hire someone.

This was my thought as well. But after looking at it closely, it doesn't seem too hard. At least not hard enough to pay someone to come and loosen the two or three set screw locking the spring assembly to the shaft and winding the spring tighter.

I'll be watching some you tube videos, and grabbing a 30 rack and going for it more than likely.

It’s all about having the proper adjustment rods and taking your time, having two people may not hurt either.
