Was initially reticent about this mod but after talking to the tuner and reading more positive than negative/indifferent reviews, decided to bite the bullet. Also gave me a great opportunity to install an AFE dry filter.

GTek makes a great kit on TRDshop.com and has detailed instructions in color as well as a video.

Here are a few snapshots of how it went for me:

Depends. May not pass at some STAR smog check visual inspections... but if you get unlabeled parts that look oem I would think you would be good.

I have the GTek sabm. When you say growl, do you mean you hear a rumbling growl that wasn't there before and can kind of feel it I the gas pedal? Is this due to all the extra air being sucked in through the fender and rumbling the truck? That's what mine is doing right after installing the sabm.

Couldn't you use a second stock intake tube in place of these kits?

Good info in this thread.

I opted for the DIY approach and will have the job done for $22 instead of $90. :spending:

One of the first things I did when I got my 2010 was put an AFE Momentum in it, which did make a huge difference... Any opinions on whether or not this mod will further improve what I have?

Check the build link in my signature.
I did it DIY before Greg ever started making kits. Not sure long term that it really did anything, except that after I did it I noticed a slight whistle in the air box when driving. I would usually just turn up the radio, but my wife noticed it whenever she rode with me and it bugged her. :notsure:

FWIW, I don’t plan on doing it to my ’21.

Those of you that have done the DIY SABM, how do you know where to drill the 3” hole in the box and fender? I have the parts from the above post and want to do this next weekend along with the TB coolant bypass

You could drill your hole in the air box and then mock up a tube out of cardboard and push it towards the fender to make your marks with a sharpie.

Excalty what I did. Drilled the box first then to the metal. Ut made sure I would not hit the wire ground that is there.

Anyone running the TRD air accelerator on the stock intake opening as well as the SABM? Trying to figure out if it would be worth adding the air accelerator while doing the SABM.

I haven't gone out of my way for it, but figured if I was already going to have the fender liner out along with the air box. It couldn't hurt to add the accelerated if it didn't interfere with the SABM. Looks like I can pick them up locally for like $15, and with the DIY SABM its not like I'm sinking much into this. I don't expect the accelerated to do anything crazy but any little benefit is useful.

You shouldn't need to take the liner out

If you don't take the liner out and drop something through the cutout then it's interesting :p
