Agreed. They are getting rather expensive for what they are. If you don't mind the less features on the current Tundra I think it's the best bang for buck as far as power and reliability.

Lay off the accelerator and you can get the same gas mileage. I never go above 2k rpms and pretty much average 18-20 mpg.

Almost bought a Tacoma for the rear locker, and tight trail superiority over Tundra along with obvious MPG increase
Sure glad I test drove a Tacoma lol
Driving position, sitting on the floor and seat width stinks (6 feet tall I’m not really a huge dude)
Truck bed is plastic in Tacoma, so not the greatest if your going to use it as a work truck.
List what you like about the Tacoma and get it as close to the a Tacoma as you can with a few mods
If its MPGs wait for Toyota to come out with a diesel hopefully soon for the Tundra

For me it’s not about the tundra mpg or the cost of gas. It’s the range and the unusable fuel in both size tanks. Being at the pump so often is a waste of my time.

Absolutely correct. I made the mistake of trading my 2015 SR5 for a 17 Tacoma. I was back into a 18 tundra 8 months later.

Don’t do it, you will regret.

I drive about 80 miles past the "0 miles" remaining. No big deal. When I refill I am about to put in about 34 gallons. Even the duramax diesel only has a 36 gallon tank. You're not really going to get any further on that....time to buy a Honda civic for commuting? Put one of those transfer flow tanks in...46 gallons?

Add the transfer flow tank. Itll be cheaper than trading in.

I don't know where these guys are coming up with 15-16mpg for the Tacoma. Real world highway driving, I saw 22-23MPG, stock. One 200 mile trip, 24MPG. I did drive gently, keeping it at around 70MPH.
Specs: 100% stock Tacoma. DC/SB, 4WD, TRD OR. Kept it until 20k miles, but sold due to bigger space needed for family. I'd still have it if I didn't need to tow/haul/3+passengers.

Probably because they modified their trucks like the majority of the other guys on the Tacoma forum? I got about 18 combined avg in stock form on my Tacoma. Definitely wasnt worth the shitty transmission or gutless low end on the motor

I upgraded from Tacoma , it’s a nice truck was averaging around 21-22 mpg , the only issue was lack of leg room for rear seats and lack of driver seat adjustment , had to find a cushion , over longer drives back pain was an issue also.

I didn’t mind it. It was good for “eco” driving. Which meant you didn’t get the brute power of the V8, but you also didn’t pay for it at the pump, either. It was fine for what it was intended for.

I think Toyota took a step backward with the 3rd gen Tacoma. The 2nd gen was a solid vehicle. The 1st gen was what every midsized truck should be IMO.

Nah. It’s a good truck. Better interior amenities, electronic gizmos some people wanted, better looks (my opinion :)), better MPG.
Agreed on the 1st gen. But it’s what every Compact! size truck should be. I still miss that 99 with 5-speed manual. If they came out with one today. Better yet, an ‘82 replica, I’d buy one in a heartbeat!

You cannot adjust the drivers seat..... I don’t get it. It’s really nice truck. I drive my brothers 17 a few times a year. And it’s fun. But then I get back to my tundra and smile ear to ear

My first Toyota was a 2004 Tacoma, 5 speed manual with the 3.4 V6, the final year of the Gen 1 body style. She got terrible gas mileage, worse than the follow up 4.0 engine and about the same as my Tundra, and she was slow, but man, I loved that truck. I agree completely, that's the size a "compact" truck should be. To me, that was the perfect Tacoma because it knew what it wanted to be.

Before I got rid of my 16 Taco last year, I let my friend who is on his second Tundra give it a drive. He was astonished with its performance, and I don't mean that in a good way. After the drive, all he said was "Wow, this wouldn't be the right truck for me."

I feel your pain, because I drive two different Tundra trucks. I could have one Tundra and a sedan that gets better MPGs, but I no longer enjoying driving vehicles that sit lower than a truck. I'll keep my trucks.

yep. I needed to go get something for the pig roast we were having and my truck was blocked in so my brother said to take his truck and going down my road wasn't terrible but as soon as I went to get on the highway I started noticing how bad it was. throttle response was god awful, felt like I had my foot in the floor trying to get up to speed, felt no pull even in second gear, honestly felt like I was driving an underpowered sedan. somebody would have to pay me to drive another one cause it was just an awful experience overall. My friend had a 95.5 tacoma that he didn't like to drive cause it was a manual. I liked driving stick and I didn't have a car of my own so i would just drive that to school everyday and I loved it. Regular cab short bed 2.7 I4 5speed and I fell in love with it. had a ton of ground clearance with the only modification being 31in tires.im planning on buying another one someday just to have an offroad rig that actually fits on the trails

I'm another "traded my taco for a tundy" guy and yea the room plus power ratio makes it definitely work it. Had a 2.7l prerunner and even the milage difference between these two it's still worth it. I'm getting around 18.5mpg on the tundra vs 21 in my taco. I put 150k on the taco and loved it like crazy, but I don't really miss her yet. I'm a +1 for keeping the tundra. Also I drive 50 miles round trip for work and it's great not having to fill up twice a week since I have the ginormous gas tank!
