What are the differences between the extended and non-extended king coil overs. Are they different lengths if so what are they. The only difference I find is that an aftermarket uca is required. Thanks

Aftermarket UCA's give you more travel so you would want to buy extended travel shocks to go with the UCA's. If you stick with stock UCA's then you don't use extended travel shocks.

I didn’t think king offered a ext travel coilover off the shelf for oem setups..I thought fox was the only one that offers the extended version

check the option box for extended travel. scroll down just above the reviews and look under the part numbers tab.

i don't see them on king's site either, just adjuster or no adjuster. i know they exist because they are on my truck, filthy has them as does sdhq.

Does anyone know the difference in travel between the two? Or the extended/collapsed length of each? Hard to find specs. Debating between non extended so I don’t need an UCA or ext with new uca.

I'm under the impression they're the same shock but the OEM version has a "stopper" of some sort in it to keep travel within a certain spec. The extended travel kings (and I believe fox as well) do not have that limiting feature so you end up with an extended travel range. I also believe both the fox and king require you to go to the extended travel if you want 3" or more of lift height.

Don’t buy a nice 2.5 shock and not get the extended length. The UCA is not just for the extra travel, it helps fix your alignment after you lift the ride height.

I think the extended travel + uca yields 1 inch extra down travel. Check total chaos website about their arms

The only difference (as far as I'm aware) is a spacer exists on the "normal" travel to prevent over drooping, where as the spacer is removed to gain more droop. "Usually" an aftermarket upper arm is required, mostly so the arm doesn't tap the coilover spring at full droop. I ran extended travel on my 4runner for awhile until I felt like buying uppers. No issues whatsoever that whole time. I would be SURPRISED if extended travel pulled even an inch more droop than "normal".

If you plan to get uppers now, get extended. If you plan to run stock uppers for awhile or forever, get normal. Normal can be converted to extended with 30 minutes of work from a shock/offroad shop.

Go all in and get the ext travel shocks with UCA's (cry once ;) ). As said above, it will help with your alignment numbers and will help with alignment adjustment/flexibility when you get larger tires too.

MCM and TC have good UCA's.

Others have mentioned very good points, main difference is travel numbers between the 2. I have the regular 2.5 kings, when I rebuild them I will make them ext travel and slap on some TC UCA's, poor mans long travel kit.

UCAs are $800 for Total Chaos, just trying to decide if 1” more of travel is worth $800, especially when I can convert them to extended travel at a later date by removing spacer. I know I may get a little better flex but how much better will the ride really be with one extra inch in the front?

The better alignment is more important than the travel

My alignment is right on with stock UCAs and 2.25” lift. Watch #filthymotorsports videos and he’ll shed a lot of light on a lot of things many people are confused about. Running big tires is easier if you adjust the lower control arms to move the wheel forward. This is where the UCA with more caster really helps. It puts the UCA Over the LCA after you move the LCA forward. He can help you pick the right one too. He will also guide you down the right path and save you money that so many waste on unnecessary things that might actually worsen our ride.

Oh, and the UCA joint helps with droop. The stock joint can’t handle that angle. If you run the extended travel King with stock UCA, you could break your upper ball joints. But it’s only going to happen if you’re letting the wheel come off the ground or you max out the travel.

there was a post few weeks back on the difference but yeah it was a spacer or stopper and you would gain maybe 1/2" on ext vs non ext iirc.
so if you bought the on extended version, remove the stopper and voila ! you have the extended one :)

I swapped regular Fox 2.5 for extended travel and gained just shy of 1/2” droop.

would you recommend going up in spring rate if you add a steel bumper ? I think KING oem comes with 600 lbs so maybe 700 ?

I Would say it depends on the ride you want to achieve. If you keep it at 600, you can increase the preload to counter the bumper weight. Then you’ll have a plusher ride. If you’re concerned about bottoming, then go with 700 or increase compression damping.

Yes you need to go to 700 with additional weight imo.. The 600 are at max preload with 2.5” ish lift, no room to move. Liked 700 for MT, but thought more would help. After switching to LT with the optional 700, switching to 800.:notsure:

If you get the extended you don’t need a UCA. It just helps to yield the full benefit of the shock

probably rebuild the shocks and when you open them, remove the spacer. best to leave it to someone that does it for a living :)
