I didn’t want to spend hundreds on ladder/kayaks racks so I gave it a shot and built them from United-strut. Bought the actual kayak holders and the track nuts on eBay. 2 10’ sections of uni-strut and some plate steel. Painted it in rustolium bed coating.

I think it turned out pretty darn good for the few times a year I’ll need it.

Great solution. I would add some triangulation maybe. Put a piece from the top of one to the bottom of another on each side. Might be fine, Unistrut is great stuff. Really stiff.

Have you carried kayaks before? Maybe I’m wrong, but those don’t look sturdy. Just something to think about before a big gust of wind sends your kayaks flying in to another car.

I doubled up on the bolts to the rail. I am surprised how sturdy it is. I think I want the top horizontal sections longer and maybe connect the 2 vertical posts with a horizantal piece.

Looks great, I'm considering doing this! Do you know how much weight the rail can support? I will most likely have 3 kayaks.

    Thanks
