My favorite thing to tell patients is a line that was used on me by my parents.

Pt: it hurts when I do XYZ
    Me: well don’t do that

Said with a smile of course

I have a slimline bumper on my wishlist, if/when I get it I’ll paint it then.

You guys might want to check, of all places, Walmart online.

When I painted my camper shell a few months ago the "quart" of 3L5 (Radiant Red) I bought was $80. Bought a quart of clear from them too. I think it was $48.

Hey dochanson, a couple more questions about your bumper painting:

Did you use your spray gun to do the epoxy primer and which primer did you use? how many coats? How long a dry time before paint?

Did you sand the primer after it dried?

You said you had done 4 color coats I think, how long did you wait between coats? How long after last coat before clear?

Did you do any wet sanding on the color coats?

I got a couple of quotes yesterday on having this done which is pushing me towards doing it myself. I have stripped the chrome off of grilles before and color matched and clear coated, but only with rattle cans.

Have a link (other than to Walmart)? Im seeing lots of paint, but nothing about getting specific paint codes. Well, maybe they just don't have 3R3 in anything bigger than a couple of ounces.

I've only looked for 3L5 since that's my color. Here's the link to the 3L5 i bought. Maybe you can go direct to the vendor to see about a can of 3R3.

Yeah I have a devilbiss finish line gun, great gun for the diy guy/gal

Best thing is to go to an automotive paint store and tell them what you’re doing. They’ll point you in the right direction. There are a lot of supplies that you don’t necessarily think of (mixing cups, degreaser, hardeners etc) the paint store will also provide an info sheet that provides all necessary info. Will tell you air pressure, tip size, flash time (time between coats) etc

    But to answer your questions:
-shopline epoxy primer (since it’s brand new and not dented I didn’t see a need for filler/high build primer)
    -2 coats of primer
-I gave 4 hours between primer and color
-yes, block sand after primer and before color. It has to be glass smooth.
-never never never sand the color coat (when using base/clear, if using a single stage then yes sand color)
    -10 min between color coats
-2 hours between color and clear

If starting from scratch, expect to drop $400-500 on gun and supplies. If you’re going to do more projects in future...it’s worth it. Otherwise the shop quote may not be so bad

Just received these. Going to try them on my door handles. Not sure about coverage but it could be a cheaper option for painting bumper end caps for those interested.

The three cans were $60 shipped to my door.

Finally got around to painting the door handles.

Taking them off is very straightforward, but getting the chrome cover off the handle was a bit tricky. Locktite was definitely applied liberally.

I then scuffed them with 400 grit sand paper and applied the adhesion promoter followed by base coat then finally the 2K clear.

I’m really impressed with how well the 2k laid down from the rattle can. Now it’s a waiting game for them to cure. I have a couple of tiny UFOs to sand out, but for $60 I’m very pleased

It’s always fun when my helper decides to lend a hand

Pro-tip, when painting in 100 degree weather go easy on thickness of clear. I laid it on too thick and had solvent pop on majority of the pieces. $55 lesson learned.

I stripped the effected pieces back down, made another trip to local paint store and the second try went much better

Completed a 3900 mile 2.5 wk road trip through TX, NM, AZ, and CO with the wife, two kids and doggo.

Stayed in RTT about 80% of the time. Saw a lot of the cliche Southwest sites but enjoyed all of it. Truck did great, finally got to do some actual 4x4ing.

Fried the Smittybilt compressor so I replaced it with an ARB.

I boogered up my rear bumper dropping into a creek bed. But have a new (eBay) bumper cover waiting to be painted and replace the damaged one.

    All worth it!

Regarding the ARB compressor, I placed the switch inside the center console because I had no blank switch spot available. I plumbed a 1/4” pneumatic tube to bed of truck. Placed a bulkhead fitting in rear of bed. I reused the whip line from the Smittybilt compressor. I placed it back there so I don’t have to open my hood to use compressor, also 90% of the time I use the compressor to pressurize my water port for rinsing off sandy toys and kids at the beach.466B67D7-BD10-4B06-A1F5-699666AEE904.jpg39DC6C7F-0BA7-4385-BF89-EDD6C9514A0D.jpg7192CB76-7208-43CC-87BB-983643A67EF4.jpg5E3BDCC6-031B-4556-9412-67B203717262.jpg8399AA28-E9BC-4F69-8605-AC371070DBB7.jpg6497D727-7BBF-4BAA-B984-50C8F76F804B.jpg9F2B5636-83F5-448F-9C5D-392471A9E04C.jpg6E462610-B4AA-4203-860B-D94B3C72759B.jpg
