Damn, last post in May. Is there anybody alive? I'm about to buy a charcoal grill and need your advice. I want to buy a charcoal grill before Black Friday that will fit in my pickup. Which from these could fit in? I also thought about Kamado Joe or BGE. They would fit for sure, but so expensive. Have you tried to go camping with Weber like in the picture above?

I use a Char Griller Akron Kamado. I got it on sale in a the table for $250. My dad has a Kamado Joe and it works just about as well and I have never had any leaks. The size is bigger than a large but smaller than an XL when compared to the BGE. I ran a 16 hour smoke and barely expended any lump while holding 250F the whole time. I use a TipTopTemp on top for temperature regulation and HIGHLY recommend it to anyone with a round exhaust vent on top of their grill. If you get it from Lowe’s it has the flip up side tables instead of being in a big table like I have from Home Despot. It’s probably the only good grill Char Griller makes.

I would highly recommend a ceramic Kamado (or Akorn, I missed it originally) if you can afford it. The reason being, you will likely want to start smoking and they hold heat amazingly. You can smoke on a Weber kettle too, but a ceramic is so much easier to control and hold temps. As for your list and putting it in a pickup for camping, avoid a Kamado, especially ceramic.

As for camping, I cook on a small Weber Q portable (gas) and converting to a Camp Chef Explorer for next season...but try to do most of our camping meals over wood and fire, cast iron, Dutch oven etc

Definitely don’t need the ceramic to hold heat. The Akorn does an amazing job with its insulation and won’t break :). I always shock Kamado owners when they come over and see it in action. But I agree, for camping, I ended up getting the Volcano grill because it packs down nice and fits a standard Dutch oven inside it perfectly. It can run wood or charcoal too. The lid is a heat resistant material that folds up flat.

If I didn't have a ceramic, I'd buy an Akorn in a heartbeat as my Kamado, I consider them in the same family regardless of material it's made with. They weren't around when I bought my Vision 8-10y ago at Costco

The Big Green Egg for the win. I’ve had mine for 25 years and it still looks great and tomorrow it’ll be smoking some delicious Thanksgiving turkey & ham! It’s so easy to use and everything comes out amazing. I highly recommend one!

I have a Big Green Egg with internet control as well as a Traeger. BGE is the best hands down....

Currently a Weber kettle but will replace at some point with a Big Green Egg. I've owned Weber grills for 50 years but quality seems to have taken a dip.

Kamado Joe Lump is cleaner burning then most it seems. If I want to have something with a little more oak smoke taste I get cowboy. I have heard BGE is repackaged royal oak lump. I got it one time and had a huge brick and a bunch of metal wire in the bag, so I never bought that again.

Oklahoma Joe Smoker. After I put it together, found a local welder to seal up all of the parts that were screwed together. Held up great and worked really well. Couldn’t make the move from Texas to Wyoming so it stayed with family in Louisiana.
