I am debating between an ARB on board air system or the ARB portable one? I do not wheel or go off gird weekly, but plan on having the air for tire inflation as a primary purpose, with any other emergency that may arise as a secondary purpose for the air.

Since I do not wheel heavily, I am wondering what peoples opinions (yes I said it) are on the on board set up and expense versus a portable setup like the ARB portable system? Thank you for any advice.

I also don’t off-road heavy either, so it’s portable for me. I’m too chicken with it under the hood with all the dust and debris. I’m sure it’s great but like I said, too chicken

I have multiple vehicles and I went with ARB portable so can take it with me regardless of which vehicle I use.

I can see on-board for a dedicated trail rig. but when you sell the rig, bye-bye on board system.
I'm a fan of portable. It will be with you life of the unit & is far more versatile.

I’ve got the ARB twin portable. I can move it between trucks or take it out when I don’t need it. All the hoses and stuff fit in the box so everything stays together. It also stays nice and clean unlike if it was mounted under the hood.

On board for me. I don't use it often anymore tho (used to chase desert races) I have the arb twin. It's underneath the truck even with the doors and has been there for a couple years. Dust and mud with no issues. I also have a tank with it so I can fill a 35" tire in no time.

I have a 5 pound CO2 tank with 120PSI reg. I take it with me when we go anywhere offroad.
Tank, reg, and extra hose/fittings was about $150.

Portable - unless you do heavy-wheeling & think you'll need air without power. Honestly, not even many of the Jeepers have on-board air out here in CO. It's cheaper & more practical to have portable. The real question is compressor or CO2 tank. CO2 is faster to fill, but you have to watch to make sure you don't run out. Compressor is slower but always available if you have power.

When I had my Jeep with 36's, I bought the Viair 450p. 12v, 100% duty cycle (this is important for heavy-use), and it filled those big tires in less than 2 minutes each. I now keep the compressor in my Tundra & have used it for everything from my own tires to filling blow-up kayaks to helping folks with a flat at work. Small & convenient.

How about you get an air storage tank for under the truck, and get a portable air system. Then you kinda have both, plus extra capacity when you need it on your truck, you can have a full tank ready to go and hook your portable pump to that tank when needed, and then use the pump directly for other things. Stand alone tanks are pretty cheap at harbor freight.

I have this...been excellent and airs up fast!! Engine gets hot so may need to cool down before placing back into bag. Powered by plugging into battery of your truck with engine on.

One I have is $100 less and as I said gets aired up fast!

Funny story, after Crab Flats run in Aug I was airing up and couldn’t figure out why this time was taking so long. I was with Tony @fisherman951 and he offered to use his. Well, he looked at my compressor and was like, what’s this plug? Is that supposed to be in there??
Duh!! :angrygirl: Forgot to take cover off air inlet so the compressor can get air!!
So just don’t do that and you be good!

I have a cheap one from Amazon I think 50 or 60 bucks I have used it 3 times it’s definitely not fast but filled up my 35s with no problems. Just grab a beer and wait it out lol. I don’t do enough off-roading to justify couple hundred dollars or more on a compressor.

    From their FAQ's

    Q: What is “Duty Cycle”?

In short, Duty Cycle is the amount of time that a compressor can be run in a full cycle (typically one hour) that includes the compressor’s run time and rest time. Select VIAIR compressors are equipped with a thermal overload protector to protect the unit in case of over duty cycle or high temperature operation.

I think if you do multiple vehicles (you and your cheap ass buddies..) the 100% duty cycle option might be better

:rofl: Even if I aired up others it won't take so long that I would worry about it running an hour. Just my truck alone gets it kinda hot to the touch but that's cuz it's been on and working so understandable but cools off fast.

If you need a mount for the ARB compressor then let me know! I have the mounts for sale made for the ARB twin. Can also use the mount to install any other compressor of your choice. It’s really nice to have air all the time.

Love my ARB portable. If someone else needs air they can use their battery not mine. Comes mounted in a nice toolbox where i keep the upgrade filler hose with gage, tire patch kit.... the portable stays packed away until needed, not subjected to heat and dust of engine bay.

I have something that works great but is not designed for this intended purpose. I use an old firefighting SCBA tank and modified the hose fitting to an air chuck. It fills up tires FAST! I just have to be sure not to open it too fasy as there's no regulator. Someone that has old SCUBA tanks could maybe have those filled with regular air? Not sure I don't dive.

Yep, just duty cycle. I got the heavier duty unit because I had huge tires & was refilling them weekly after trails. The lesser is more than enough for 90% of applications.
