Experienced my first Haboob last night in beautiful Big Spring TX. My tonneau cover was a causality. Undercover SE, hard shell. Ripped it right off. Can’t find it anywhere. Haha. No telling where it ended up. Can’t believe it didn’t break back window when it went flying off.

......I experienced one near Phoenix a few years back. Was able to get to the airport in time and flight took off before the airport temporarily closed. I guess they are quite common in AZ

I hear about them alot in Arizona. Was in a smaller one once. So crazy to be driving in nice sunny weather and seeing a cloud of dust just overwhelm you and block out the sun.

Wow, I’ve been through dozens of haboobs, living in the Phoenix area, but I never heard of one doing damage like that. Must be those Texas haboobs.

Wow! I’ve never heard of haboobs! I have had a hard cover rip off in the cross wind on a truck once. Flew into a field and exploded apart haha.

We had a bunch of theses in Saudi. Used to have to surround the tents with deuce and a half trucks and tie the tents to them.

Cover was turned closed, but not locked. I don’t keep anything worth damaging the cover back there so I didn’t lock it. (Learned that lesson in college after having car window broken three times on campus and nothing stolen. I have nothing worth stealing! Don’t break my stuff to find that out, come on in look around and be on your way)

Only damage was it bent up and ripped some of the metal rails under the plastic on both sides. Nothing a hammer and some liquid nail didn’t fix. It’s a work truck, so as long as the plastic cover doesn’t start flapping around when running down the highway, I don’t really mind. A few dents just give it some character. A little scuff mark on top drivers side from where it hit was it was flying off, haha, but nothing bad.

Side note, I had heard there was hail so I was hiding under a bridge on my job site. Apparently, which I did not know then, that is the worst place to be in a strong wind event. The structure of the bridge does something to make the wind even stronger under it. Probably would have been fine it I was out in the open. Lesson learned.

Haboobs and microbursts are common occurrences in Az. Check out microbursts if you dont know what they are. They can literally explode your house. Way worse than haboobs. For your tonneau to rip off during a haboob seems strange but not impossible. The wind tunnel effect probably helped like you said
