Had an great uncle that landed at Utah. He opened up to me once about his experiences for a class project. I never heard him talk about his service before or after that. The stories still resonate with me today as we reflect on the 75th anniversary. He's been gone for about 20 years now, but I still think about him. This drinks for you Uncle Fred, and those that served with you.

What a day. Thanks for sharing about your Uncle.
Young folks should all watch Saving Private Ryan; the fist part anyway. Can't even imagine being there.

Had the privilege to met a former P47 pilot who flew CAP over the beaches that day. He told me about being able to see what was going on. Didn't engage any enemy but had a run in with a trigger happy spitfire. There were several stories, if you know one of these guys, just start talking to them. Don't press, just listen. I was told by his family that he had never told anyone those stories before. I was humbled.

Howitzer shell with trench art that was handed down to me. He was in a artillery unit that marched from Normandy to Germany via Belgium and Holland.479871D1-69A4-4DC5-A68C-A3090DA247D3.jpg

My grandfather was in Normandy on D day at age 19 I believe. For my whole life he told me and everyone in my family he was a "water boy" in the army. He passed away about 10 years ago and in his last few days when he was in hospice care, he told us a LOT more and shared photos he had stashed away, told us stories, showed us medals and bronze stars he had received for his service and it was absolutely amazing to hear and a miracle he survived. He was one of the lucky ones and I am so proud to say I'm his descendant.

    Alot of them
They had a ceremony here at Macdill and there were about a dozen veterans in attendance. The youngest was 93 and the oldest just turned 100. There were so many people in attendance that they facebook live streamed it so the rest of the base could watch. As mentioned earlier, talk to them if you ever get to meet them....it doesnt have to be a special day of rememberance or Veterans day. A simple thank you on any day that they are alive means alot to them. After 24 years of active duty and now 3 years of civil service, this ceremony was unlike anything that I have ever seen. The best part was when the honor guard presented each one of them with the American flag. God bless each and every one of them!! :oldglory: :hattip:

Was amazing to hear some of the stories yesterday. What the French did in adopting a cross and how a woman made it her mission back then to take a picture of each cross and try to find out address of family and get a picture mailed to them. Also to see former service men that went back at their age, there were many touching moments yesterday. God Bless everyone that was there and their families!!! Thank you to all the men that served and sorry for your loss to all family members that lost a loved one back then.

Just outside the front entrance to the Pocono raceway I was able to snap this picture. Everytime I see our flag it reminds me of the sacrifices made to make our country the greatest in the world!20190601_122815.jpg
