Very happy to report that I got the USB port installed. Hardest part was figuring out how to get the existing cigarette plug out.

Took the negative off the battery, parking brake and popped the tab to put it in neutral. Unscrewed the shifter and popped off the center console.
    image.jpg

That exposed the cigarette lighter plug.

    image.jpg

Took a little finagling but got it out.

    image.jpg

Put the new one in and it fit like a champ. Tightned the nut down and good to go.

    image.jpg
    image.jpg

Next was to wire it in. It came with wire taps but the original harness had 2 red and 2 black. Wasn't sure what to use and on examination I noticed the prongs at the end of the new wire looked exactly like that of the original plug. Looked the right size so I used a razor blade to trim the plastic around the prong.

    image.jpg

Plugged them into their proper side and fit perfect.

    image.jpg

Battery back on to test it and I'm high 5ing myself, It Worked!!!

    image.jpg

Plugged in the phone and it's charging!!

    image.jpg

Wrapped it in electrical tape to make sure they stayed plugged in, zip tied the excess wire and put the console back together.

    image.jpg

    Got it from Sparks Parts...

Yeah, I'm sure that one would work as well. Just as long as it would fit the hole right, which it looks like it would.

This USB unit is now being installed at the port as an option, as least in the GST area. I have one installed in the back of the center console for the rear passengers. I assume this unit could also replace the cigarette lighters in the front (under the AC controls)?

Probably going to save money and go with that one. Don't really want to pay $39.

Yes you could replace the front ones. They should eliminate the stupid cig lighter anyway. Those that smoke can use a standard lighter.

It's fine to have 1 I guess for different accessories and that is a universal plug, but to put 3 in the front is crazy. Plus everything is going to USB now. One thing I miss about my Chevy, is that it had an SD card reader. Toyota is probably 10 years from having an SD card, ha.

Of the ones they list, two of them are 4.2A (2.1 amps each). The other ones provide 2.1A only for the bottom, and 1 amp for the top. I'd go with one that provides 2.1 A for both outputs. Your devices will charge faster, and some devices (iPads) require 2.1.

I've been wanting to do this but was actually waiting for a "you seriously can't mess this up" type of right up. Mainly because I didn't want to break tabs or search for wiring. Great write up man. This will be next on my list so I can keep from plugging in a usb cigarette-lighter adapter. .

Thanks, yeah it was pretty easy once you get in to do it. I was the same way, did not want to use an adapter, and my other USB is being used.

There is a video online somewhere on how to take that center console piece off. But just take the shifter off, and use trim tools if you have them to pry the piece up. Start at the top where it connects to the center console storage.

Sweet deal man. My wife is always running with no battery power because of all the social media crap so I get shit out of luck for a charging spot. I'll put an order in this week for one of these doodads and get it hooked up. appreciate the tips!!

This is a MUST, I mean, wth put 4 cig adapter plugs in the truck. Really? I think I may replace one under the radio as well.

Agreed.. The USB under the radio does data, which is nice..but it needs to be in the center console. I dont know why Toyota exposed it for the truck when the data USB is hidden in other Toyota vehicles (my 2012 camry had the USB in the back of the dash console, you could plug in something and put it in the storage area and not see it). My scion had the USB plugs in the center console as well.
For the cig powers under the radio.. I bought some super low profile USB adapters.. They are *almost* low profile enough to let the cig dust cap fully close.. They look like if they didnt have a tiny lip around the edge, they would sit deeper inside the cig socket. As an experiment, I am going to file off the little lip and see how it fits.. (being sure I have a way to get it out, if I stick it in there.. ) If it works like it appears it would, it could be an acceptable option without taking out the console etc, and the dust cap should close..

    Update:
I gave it a go with mixed results.. I ground off the lip around the adapter.. It fit nicely inside a cig socket splitter I had. (I used it to hold the adapter while I worked on grinding the lip off). And it looked like it would be just fine.. But when I plugged it in to the 12v receptacle in the truck, it wouldn't go in as deep. The receptacle in the truck is shallower.. It was close but it did not allow the adapter to go deep enough to close the lid. So I popped off the little faceplate on the adapter.. It did go deep enough in the receptacle to allow closing the lid, but it looked kinda crappy to me.. It was functional... and with the lid closed you cant tell.. but it would bother me long term to leave it like that.. so I guess I will be replacing the receptacle sometime.

My plugs should be in today along with safe, so I’ll be doing this hopefully this weekend. How do you poop off the center console?
