Well, I said I would follow up with a how-to for how to take the console box off the roof and fix the bulb connector problem and, finally, here it is...

Here's the console box before removal...
    IMG_0346.jpg

There are four T20 screws which hold the console box to the roof.
Two of theme are behind the square center section panel which has the clip holder on it.
The other two are inside the sunglasses holder.
The center section must be pried out to access those two screws.
A little painter's tape will protect the plastic frame while prying out the center section...
    IMG_0347.jpg

Here's the center section with the first corner pried loose.
Once you have one corner loose, the whole section comes out pretty easily...
    IMG_0348.jpg

Here's a pic of the back side of the center section removed.
Note that the clip holder can be removed - might be a good place for custom switches...
    IMG_0349.jpg

Once the center section is removed, you can get to the first two screws...
    IMG_0354.jpg

Next, open the sunglasses holder to access the other two T20 screws...
    IMG_0357.jpg

Be careful removing the last screw - once it's out the unit will come right off
and will be hanging by the wrapped wire bundle hooked to the main connector...
    IMG_0359.jpg

Here's a closeup of the back side of the roof console box unit with the connector highlighted...
    IMG_0361.jpg

Here's a closeup of the connector itself...
    IMG_0364.jpg

Here's a closeup of the connector after release.
Use a small screwdriver or a thumbnail to lift the tab and pull apart the connector...
    IMG_0366.jpg

Here's what the back side of the bulb socket is SUPPOSED to look like.
Note that the plastic "weld" is holding the copper strip flat to the plastic body...
    IMG_0372.jpg

Here's the problem side. as you can see, when I tried to insert the LED bulb, the slightly fatter base
pushed the copper socket and the attached copper strip up off the plastic post (probably a poor "weld").
Once this happens, the bulb just pushes the connector up instead of inserting into it.
No way to fix this from the front side...
    IMG_0371a.jpg

After pushing the copper strip back down onto the post, I kept pressure on it from the backside while inserting
the bulb in from the front side. Depending on how well the plastic post and "weld" holds once you push it back on,
you might need to add a dab of silicon to hold it in place. Luckily mine stayed in the correct position...
    IMG_0371b.jpg

Reinstall by reconnecting the main wire bundle connector, reattaching the main unit with the four screws,
and snapping the center section back in place. Note that the screws go into "nut clips" attached to the cross members
behind the console box. These nut clips can move around during removal and you may have to fiddle with them a little to get
them lined up with the screw holes in the console box. A gimlet or other pointed tool helps.

    Success!...
    IMG_0386.jpg

After hearing from so many others who had similar problems, I think if I had to do it over, I would just remove
the unit to change the bulbs in the first place. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

You forgot going to LKQ (sp). To buy a new overhead console because you blew the brass stips in the old one.

Let’s say someone completely jacked up the socket and broke one of the strips. Could you solder in an led strip back behind the break?

FYI, it was very simple to solder an led strip into the map lights. They don’t work by pushing them, but come on with unlock and fade in and out with the dome, and come on when switch is turned to on. I probably could have played around longer and figured out which strips made them work by pushing the light, but I really didn’t care if they worked that way or not.

    Here's what I did:

    1. Stick a small piece of duct tape to the bulb.
    2. Grip the duct tape and pull the bulb out.
    3. Insert new LED bulb.

It took 30 seconds each side.

Thank you sir! Exactly what I've been searching for. Found a lot of threads on removal of the console, but nothing close to this step-by-step. Will be doing this to put in my aftermarket mic for my new head unit.

Thanks again for spending the time on it.

    That is some funny stuff!

I blew a fuse on when changing the rear roof domes in our 07, had a spare Thank God! My son was like "Dad, what did you DO"! Because all the lights were out.

The Glove box bulb was my nemesis. The socket/prongs got pushed upward behind the dash. Had to remove a few things to make it work again, maybe an extra 20-30 minutes.

OP’s post #38 with the pics of taking down the overhead map light unit and step by step fix - I cannot say enough how easy this was!!! Any new Tundra owner needs to read and watch this thread, this happens a lot and you may need to do this one day!

I appear to be the latest lucky winner of weak ass prongs! I bought a new to me 2016 crew with the moon roof buttons and what not in the console. I'll try and do my best "rockjock" fix when I get home tonight. Anyone have trouble with pulling the unit down with his method having the additional electrical components? screws in the same place? harness connections and pry spots?

Thanks for a great "how too". I was so gentle pulling them out, totally frustrated that they wouldn't socket. And then I arrived here... thank god! Just about to tear out the thin metal shields....

For those that arrive here with the rear window and moon roof option, it's one more easy connection to take apart inside compartment just above the switches, near the two screws you're going to pull anyway.

I'll clearly not change these two bulbs out without taking the unit down again. So, after careful bending of the brass bits and getting it to hold, I only had 60% confidence it would stay in place long term. I placed a small small bit of cheap super glue(harbor frieght) on the top brass post of each light base. Used a tooth pick and it worked great.

    Thanks again all!
