yep..some HOAs are out of control in CA..better buy a house with no HOA and tag those extra $200 to your mortgage instead :)

I live in an HOA neighborhood. They do good things like taking care of common areas and landscaping at the entrance road etc. But they have ticked me off with BS rules also - especially the ones that don't make any sense. We also have the "No Car Maintenance" rule. They won't do anything if it is occasional tire rotation or brake pads replacement type work, but if you have two cars parked in the driveway with the hood open all the time and banging on stuff with a big hammer at midnight, you will surely get a letter from them...That's what they are there for. I don't want a neighbor like that, but the occasional stuff I would gladly walk over and help the neighbor change out a battery or swapping wheels etc...

Thanks for the idea. Won’t be dismantling it though. I’ll rule with an iron fist.

By the way, I’m confused. The title of the thread says “HOA rules”, but then all the comments are negative. I feel like none of you guys think the HOA rules at all....

You can do that too. If you need and enforcer, I know a guy.

My HOA has 'mandatory' monthly meetings. I haven't gone since I moved in over a year ago

    To much to list:)
Live in one now and if we can swing it we figured we are going to try an acreage. Live in our other house over fourteen years and it was paid for. We ran off the meth heads and thieves and everyone knew each other in the neighborhood and we lived on a culdesac. No HOA!! The lady next door decided to move for no reason and some crazy lady and her insane husband moved in. This couple come to find out got ran out of their place because of fines having to pay the HOA where they use to live!! They proceeded to run a kennel out of the house with up to 12 dogs or more there at a time!! the smell was unbelievable!! Many calls to the city and they gave her more respect than us after 14 years and everything we had done for the city!! This lady would MF me and every other cuss word then turn around and say “god bless and see you in church”!!! They were crazy!! Sold our house in two days!! Moved to a new subdivision with an HOA and expensive homes but they do not do anything and they don’t treat everyone the same so we are out of here too!! Acreage here we come!!!:) Place would be great to live, on our block we all talk and keep everything clean but they do not run the place like they should!!

No hoa, but high taxes. I know that states get your $ in different ways. All my taxes are about $100 a week. But I have the largest house, biggest garage and biggest piece of property in the neighborhood. Also have local police, city water and natural gas are available too. Paved roads with a full time dpw. I'm far enough off the highway and the street I live on doesn't go anywhere so traffic is just the people that live here. If interested contact the local ReMax. Wait, scratch that.... I still need two non duck posts so I dont get nipped by the BST police

Run...run far away. Lol. I wouldn't buy in any HOA neighborhood. My daughter lives in one and they were notified last year it was their year to have the house repainted. WTH. They put a limit on the number of years you could go without repainting. Not to mention every little landscape idea has to be blessed. No way. Not for me.

Damn! My last two homes were HOA governed. Never had an issue. In fact I never heard anyone around me have an issue. For the most part we did what we wanted. The only times I dealt with the HOA is when I submitted the color for the repaint of my house and when we built a large patio in the back yard. Both were approved within a few days.
In Colorado, most communities that are new will have an HOA unless you are lucky enough to be able to afford a chunk of property out and away from the city. Most here can’t. 500 thousand buys you a little community home now days.
My parents are in an older neighbor with no HOA and while a lot of owners take care of their homes there’s plenty that are shit holes. One clown 10 houses up was storing a truck topper on his roof and had 2 cars parked on his front yard.
That is the main reason I am OK with an HOA. I have zero doubt losers like truck topper are costing my parents money on their home value. To me, they have a place in tightly built communities.

I like a nice neighborhood, but not that nice. No way am I buying that house.
They better have a no audio reproduction policy too & a no BBQ policy - because if you can't hear me wrenching, I better not smell your BBQ, or hear your music.

HOA's are great to some degree. I lived in two prior, and always kept my yard clean.

The problem I had is when it came to adding a deck. I bought my house new and it was in the originally in the plans to get built at the time the house was getting completed. But in all things life happened. Had a crisis and couldn't get it completed. So I moved in. Two years later, HOA is in control, refused to allow me to proceed with my deck, mind you I had pre-approval with my plans to get this built. the hoa board gave me a really hard time to get this built, so I stopped for a bit. Looked up all the board of directors address's, went to see what they were building. Funny since I work in construction industry, I knew most of the contractors. Half of them including the hoa president were building decks, pools, tennis courts, that would have never been approved. So at the next monthly meeting, I presented my case again, with all the supporting documentation, showing all the infractions they had incurred. Needless to say, my deck was approved. We did manage to get the hoa board of directors to step down and a new president stepped in.

If I was buying a house and learned they had an HOA I would buy a different house. I'm not paying dues to these assholes. I'm not going to get fined or possible evicted from my own house because some old fart that wants to abused the tiny amount of authority they have ever had in their entire life thinks my grass is too high.

I used to cut my neighbors front yard for him. I had a riding lawnmower and both our yards were easy to cut, so if his yard was looking bad and I was cutting mine I would just do his too. Would shame him into getting out there and doing it himself. :)

There are communities that have such things, but only charge dues for maintaining those things in particular but have no enforcement rights for the private properties.

I think cops kinda hate security guards that try to act like they have any real authority.

In my last post I didn't have time to include some of the ridiculous crap I got harrased for in our HOA house 19 years ago.

    - Letter from HOA: Mr. xxxx, we noticed you have an antenna on the end of your house. This is a violation of the CCR's. Please remove it immediately.

Me: Looks up FCC regs regarding receiving "free" broadcasts via airwaves. FCC regs state any homeowner, regardless of HOA CCR's, may install an antenna not to exceed 15 feet above ground level. Well, the back of our home lot had a slope that went up about 14 feet to the lot behind us. I decided that the current antenna did look kind of lame on the end of the roof so, I put it on a 12 foot mast and stuck it up on the top of the slope for all to enjoy.

Letter from HOA: Mr. xxxx, we noticed you relocated the antenna in question. This location is still not acceptable. Please remove it immediately.

Me: Dear HOA, I'm rather fond of it's current location and according to the FCC, (please see attached copy of FFC regulations regarding antennas) I am well within my rights to have it in it's current location. If you're nice I may relocate it back to the corner of the house. (which I eventually did).

-Letter from HOA: Mr. xxxx, we noticed you have modified and existing structure without approval form the architectural review committee. Please return the block wall on the South side of your home to it's original state immediately.

Me: Dear HOA, do you people actually pay attention to anything?!?? If you did, you would have known when the house was built I had requested that the builder leave a 12' opening in the wall on that side of the house so would have access to the back yard. We have been living in the home for a little over 2 months now and NOTHING has changed since we moved in (please see attached, dated, photos). Please leave me alone. (side note: of course i received another letter when I put up my gate a few weeks later).

    - Letter from HOA: Mr. xxxx, we noticed you have an RV parked in your yard (this was our pop-up trailer that was behind the offending gate. Normally it can't be seen from the front of the house but it was popped up on a Thursday afternoon to load for a 3 day weekend). This is a violation of the CCR's. Please remove it immediately.

Me: (Check CCR's, RV are allowed for a 72 hour period)

Me: (Call HOA) Hi HOA, I got a letter on Friday regarding my trailer being visible from the street. I am calling you because I checked the CCR's and it states that I am good to go for a 72 hour period. My trailer became visible on Thursday and Friday I get a letter. WTF?!??

HOA: Mr. xxxx, while making the rounds last week one of our Nazi's noticed your trailer back there. Since we don't really have the manpower to follow up on these things (like, go check again 72 hours later) we sent a "precautionary" letter of violation.

Me: Oh really HOA?!?? I'm sorry that you cannot follow your own rules but, in the future, when you see my trailer back there you'll make a note and then come back around 72 hours later and see if you can still see it. If I get another letter for this my attorney will be sending you a letter regarding nuisance/harassment and we'll see you in small claims court.

Some other misc things: they didn't like the swingset in our back yard, or our neighbors basketball hoop in their driveway (nice, in ground type, not portable). Both were banned in amended CCR's sometime after we moved.

    HOA living? No thank you.
