So we were at the beach it was 98 degrees, hasn't rained and soft sand. Went to go help my buddy get unstuck and while leaving i started to get stuck. I had to go back and forth till I was free about 15 mins worth. While doing so my transmission warning lights came on say my transmission was getting hot. Has anyone ever had this happen, should i do anything? Thanks

oh here's a dodge that got stuck last Sunday also my buddy has a dodge. Lol

Alarms at 300 F. I would do a change. Drain or Flush I suggest you read up on and decide. That was a hard beating at that temp and overheat time.

ATF rapidly breaks down at high temperatures but as long as you stopped for a little while after the warning light tripped on your truck transmission should avoid damage. Just get the fluid changed at your earliest convenience.

I got moving 5 to 10 mins (at the most probably not even that long) after the light came on. Once i got moving it went off and i proceeded home. Thanks for the replys just didnt know if I should or shouldn't I'm not a fan of changing transmission fluid.

If you have the TRD+ you should have a trans cooler

Even if he does it wouldn't do any good in this situation since no air flow was going through the grille. Change the fluid like the others said and it should be fine.

Yeah tow package has it also although its not that great IMO as its not a stand alone cooler and its part of the top of the a/c condensor. Early 2nd gen Tundras had the better trans cooler.

You should also change your engine oil. Change both at the same time. One effects the other when overheating occurs.

    Peace of mind.

Nitpicking here - clutch fan is always spinning with engine RPM, and drawing air through the grill opening.

Engine never ran hot so fan clutch wont kick in until it reaches a certain temperature caused from engine heat. It's not electric so it has no way of knowing transmission temperature. Also what does engine oil have to do with transmission fluid? Has anyone ever had this happen? Thanks again for all the replys. Im going to call toyota and see what they say. Im not a believer in changing tranny fluid. Older vehical didnt have all tthe sensors so you never knew. Also the TRD doesn't have anything different from a sr5 4x4 as far as drive train.

Yep, I've got the stand alone cooler on my 07. I've never overheated my AT but if I did I'd take it to the dealer and have them do the drain and top off. They can verify if you need a total fluid change if the fluid looks bad.

Im going to do it. I just read 220 to 240 deg. Starts atf breakdown. Saw somewhere on here not to put a external transmission cooler on our trucks because it needs to be 175 to 195 deg. To operate effiecintly. External cooler could make it run too cool in cooler temps. Idk I'm definitely going to have it changed by the dealer and I'm going to smell it too.

That Police truck probably had a transmission fluid related fire. The stuff is highly flammable. Change your engine oil or not. Definitely change your transmission fluid.

That's because the fan was drawing air in through the radiator, providing the cooling necessary to maintain engine temperature.

That's not how the clutch fan works.

The fan spins regardless of temperature. At a specific RPM (I admittedly don't know what it is for the 5.7), the clutch begins to slip and engine RPM can exceed fan speed.

Agreed but I doubt its enough to keep the trans cooled down adequately, which is why he overheated the trans fluid.

If 220 starts the breakdown I need to change mine all the time then, my truck sees 220* regularly while towing. My Tacoma trans never gets past 200* towing but that has a stand alone trans cooler instead of a combined unit.

It depends on how the external cooler is connected; my 08 showed up from the factory with an external transmission cooler. At some point during the run of the 2nd gen they stopped adding it in. You could always have the ATF analyzed by a lab.
