We have a kenmore elite fridge/freezer that quit working. Sudden onset of no cooling and no condenser/motor function. Luckily all the elk, deer and beef was in the upright. We did lose 8 dozen eggs. We have to plan better for next time.

Took the back panel off and found this doohickey that exploded. You can see the burn marks in the pic. I don’t know how to read schematics but I guess it has to do with cooling and freezing.

My question is, without a tech coming out, how do I know something else didn’t cause the thing to fry? I don’t want to spend $275 for a board to have it blow again due to another problem. The wife looked and no appointments until the 7th and the service fee is $300+. So we would already be $600+ plus however long to get the part. Thoughts?

About all that I can add is that little bad boy is an Integrated Circuit (by the fact that next to it, it says IC11). Either way you're going to have to get a new board or a new fridge. The IC could have shorted, or something else on the board shorted and the IC sacrificed itself. Be sure to ask what the warranty on the board is, I guess.

Had a board replaced a while back on an LG fridge. Technician said most likely a power surge. recomended inline surge protector at outlet. installed one and still running since.

Well, there's a reason it can cost a lot of money to have a technician remove and replace or troubleshoot electronics. Do you have a tech manual or any testing equipment?

We have a tech coming Wednesday with a new board. He’s going to check the rest of the fridge to make sure other systems haven’t failed. There may have been a power outage a few days ago that the surge protector didn’t protect against. Very reasonably priced and worth it over me trouble shooting and throwing parts at it.

Fridge is 7. Spoke to the tech, $335 for a diagnostic and a replacement board.

I did this for a frig a few years ago and just the same for a dishwasher. Insanely priced to have fixed. These things are junk, and seem to have a 5-year life span anymore. Pretty much like disposable razor blades. Fortunately they seem to be cheap enough that it doesn’t kill you when an appliance dies.

    Seems reasonable.
If not already have, get something like this for all of your appliances.

Probably just component failure on board then.
