Welcome to the Forums! Most of us have had Tacoma's in the past.

Honestly, there are small differences between the two from a functionality stand point. I'm biased to the 2nd Gens because I like the way they look on the exterior. But the interior of the 3rd Gen looks nicer to me. Worth the extra $$$? I think you're really the only one who can decide on that.

I sat in 5 or 6 Tundras before I bought. Ultimately it boiled down to me buying the truck I couldn't stop looking back at as I walked away.

Also, the 2014 has the heated mirrors and etune headunit (upgrade package). Something worth thinking about in the long run.

I'm partial to the mgm color of the 2012. I've never bought used, so I'm always a little wary. The 2012 will be a flat trade for my Tacoma though so I'll be upgrading for the same price basically. I just want a reliable truck to be able to tow and last a long time.

If it's coming as a certified from the dealer, I wouldn't be too wary. Certified generally means they offer an extended warranty on the vehicle which is an added bonus. I also noticed the 2012 has a spray in bed liner where the 2014 doesn't show the bed. If the 2014 doesn't have a spray liner that's another 5-600$ savings.

I've bought all but 1 of my trucks used. When it's Toyota, i'm never all too concerned. However, the dealer will let you take it to an independent shop for inspection if you request it. If they don't; they aren't worth buying from or there's issues they don't want you to uncover.... But it generally wont be certified if that is the case.

Yeah I figured buying certified would be the way to go in my situation. The price on the 2012 seemed a bit high, but I don't know much about tundra pricing

This is would a simple decision for me. I'll never own another black truck again... Man they look great when they're clean but 2 minutes later...

Same... I've had one black truck. And living in the mountains means lots of pollen, mildew, snow, salt, and whatever else is in the air. Never again. hahaha Not to mention if I look at a dirt road it turned brown. Since then I've only owned White and Silver trucks. :notsure:

However, @csuviper has one of my favorite trucks on this forum. He might have a different view on such matters. haha

Is it pretty much worry free when buying the 5.7 since its been around for as long as it has?

I personally like the 5.7. It's extremely easy to work on by comparison to lets say an EcoBoost F150. Consumer reports are extremely biased to one side or the other. They bash Toyota for lack of innovation or they love them based off the old saying "if it aint broke, don't fix it". In my personal experience, however, the 3UR-FE (5.7 V8) is far more reliable than the majority of truck engines out there. Again, that's MY personal opinion.

Also, I just thought of one more thing. Resale value - Tundras might as well be diesels... They tend to hold their value A LOT better than the competition. Food for thought.

I noticed that when looking at the prices of all the used Tundras. Plus, it's hard to find an SR5 4x4 here in Texas without the TSS package

One thing to consider with the 3rd gen (2014+) is the exterior and interior updates. It took a bit for the 3rd gen to grow on me..once it did..it was mine.

I love the way the 2nd gen looks and the mgm color was my second choice right behind the white taco I currently drive.

Got a certified 2012 MGM DC two years ago for 23K OTD. 24k miles, haggled them down from 27. It is a 4.6L though

Bring your wife. Favorite quote from my wife to this day "I'm a neuropsychologist and I know when people are lying to me" between her and my "no BS" mantra, we played them more than a fiddle!

I noticed the 2012 has been for sale on the lot for just over 1 month now. This give more bargaining power on a used truck?

Eh, ceramic tint, windshield shades, you'll be ok.

Mag gray from Baton Rouge Louisiana now in TN

I'm thinking the 2014 is out of the picture anyways. Dealer is saying the online price is the best they'll do and won't negotiate unless I show up in person

Looking at the Carfax, the 3rd gen is from WI. Not sure I would purchase a vehicle from the rust belt.

The 12' Tundra is pretty basic, but it has been a TX truck. Hell, the drivers seat is manual operation. Good thing, the interior is cloth due to heat. I personally had the exact same truck, and make no illusions, it was just as bad keeping clean as a black truck. The Magnetic Gray is my favorite color still though.

    Both trucks book appropriately though.

Coming from a Tacoma, the manual seats are no big deal to me. I like the fact that the 2012 has been serviced at the same dealer on time since purchased from there

I noticed that as well. Find some CL step bars and you are golden. I found all 3 sets of step bars on CL for under 150 each.

Hope you get exactly what you want. The truck is pretty clean.

Well this is the truck for you. Once you own one, you will be wondering why you even messed around with anything else in the 1/2 ton market...especially in today's standards. Cylinder deactivation BS just really turns me off any of the domestics with gas motors/ or 1/2 ton market.

Yeah since 2012 ive driven a 5.0 f150, 6.7 f250, my Tacoma, and now hopefully the tundra. I love the taco, but it just isn't made for any decent hauling and I don't off-road like most guys with one.
