Interior modifications, aka the Tundra interior sucks and I want to make it better.

I've had my 2018 TRD Pro for over a year now, and being my second Tundra since 2010, I feel like I am comfortable enough to admit that the Tundra interior is not much better than your average 90's Chrysler product. So instead of coming online and moaning about it, I made a decision to make things better myself.

    Here is my story.

During the first few weeks of ownership I added some oem bits and pieces to the truck. Starting with the driver's side a-pillar handle which truly is a game changer for those of us who are under 6 feet tall. I also added a console safe since my area is full of thieving bandits who will smash a window for spare change. Both were good mods, and I had no regrets. Fast forward a bit.....

I hated my steering wheel with a passion. After doing my research, I contacted Dan over at Vivid Racing and ordered one of his steering wheels. Being a former Subaru guy with some serious builds under his belt, I opted for a leather/Alcantara wheel. At the time I liked how it looked with the TRD knob.

Excellent topic. I did the same upgrades and still after years of ownership, am disappointed that my 2012 Lexus has better plastic and the same interior buttons, displays, and controls.

I'm not confusing this with gadgets. I also realize a limited isn't a platinum... But feel let down in what an interior of a limited is, and a platinum for that matter.

I see an awesome engine, transmission, and body shape. I also see cheap plastic, crappy instrumentation, and marginal interior design.

I see a Tacoma and a 4runner and think, what happened to the Tundra?

At any rate, I'd love to fix the crappy doors at a minimum. Dyes don't work. Plastic wrap.. Who knows.
    I'm open to anyone's progress :)

    Exactly!
There are so many little things that can be fixed. Im having a hard time doing this on my phone right now, so bear with me.

While I liked the look of the TRD knob, I still didn't love it. Having a collection of old Subaru shift knobs I decided to order an m12 to m8x1.25 adapter so I could use my old 6 speed knobs.

Not a bad start actually. Especially when paired with an Amazon special shift boot.

That wheel is a considerable upgrade. I'd enjoy that.

It really is a nice wheel.
I did about 500 miles this past weekend, all through the mountains on the highway to hell (Coquihalla) and it felt great.

Another simple mod I did was to change the look of the chrome inside using vinyl.
I will add the vendors name asap, as Oct forgotten it now, but he offers vinyl decals for the truck. I went with blackout decals for the vent, stereo, steering wheel along with color keyed decals for the phone controls. The vendor is awesome and gives you extra decals in case you screw up. Which I did once or twice, hahaha.

    Please excuse the dirty interior.
I literally got home from work, made a bourbon and coke, and decided to create this thread. My keys are somewhere, hahaha!

    Thanks man!
I also added some led interior lights. I love the bright white of an led compared to the dreary yellow hue of an incandescent. I grabbed an led kit off Amazon for about $12 and went to town.

I've completely covered the interior with sound deadening, and upgraded with a ********* full system.

And now I'm out of ideas.

Careful there, pointing out the Tundra's shortcomings can lead to alot of butthurt on this forum. Best not to mention the counter intuitive infotainment system, subpar acoustics, or 90's GM style hard plastics of the dash and interior. Just delete this post and act like it never happened ;)

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
Check out the 'What have you done to your 3rd gen' thread. There's a ton of interior mods being made/shared pretty regularly.
Here's some of my contributions...all interior mods I did. More coming in the months ahead...
    Pillar/handle wrap
    Steering wheel
    Carbon dash trim.

Love all the shifter mods. Wish there was a way we could cut down the shifter rod and make it shorter. Hate how high it stands.

    haha, thanks!
My finger slipped as I was putting this thread together and picked the shotgun picture for me. It's funny, because I have been really working on one handed, and also left handed shooting for the last couple of years. I had an old LEO friend tell me they needed to practice one handed in case they had to radio for backup while in a fire fight. I hope to never be in that situation, but I also wanted to get better hand control.

Unfortunately today, the Canadian gov't decided that we shouldn't have guns anymore and are in the process of outlawing "assault rifles" and also pistols. It's a joke.

I had mistakenly posted a pic of me shooting instead of Tundra mods. I hate starting threads on my phone!
    :D

Hahaha, I have seen it a few times around here.
I really love my truck, and like my wife, she ain't perfect. But she's perfect for me ;)

    No problem.

You can find some really cool shift knobs on Amazon too. Our thread is m8x1.25 and most manual shift knobs are threaded with m12x1.25. A simple adapter will make it work for you https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07GGWZF46/ref=pe_3034960_236394800_TE_dp_1

    Very cool!
I like your dash trim a lot and have been thinking about doing that to mine. I have some nice brushed aluminum looking vinyl that is sitting on my shelf waiting to be used. The steering wheel looks great, but the handle wrap is awesome! Such a simple change, and it makes a big difference. It's nice to see some other Toyota folks and their ideas.

Ah yeah, this is one of those areas where I wish I could do the same. The chroming of the shift lever makes it almost impossible to cut and tap new threads, or else it would be a pretty simple modification. It's unfortunate since like you said the shifter sits really high. Especially with manual shifters that are made to mount flush.

That shift boot is a good idea. Mines been needing something since I added the AJT Designs shift knob, but since I went with the tall one there isn't enough room underneath it. I don't think it would like as good as yours does.

The wheel wasn't cheap, I'll admit. But a nice wheel is going to have a high cost associated with it. I bought some different wheels for my Subarus back in the day, and they are just a pricey mod. But it was a no brainer for me when I ordered it. Other than the seats, what else in the truck are we in constant contact with? At least that's what I told myself as I entered in my CC info :D

The problem with steering wheels is that there is no middle ground. You can self wrap with high quality materials for about $150-200. I didn't want to go this route as I wanted something that looked like oem quality. I could have bought an oem wheel from a different model for $2-400, but they're only slightly better than our cheap feeling plastic wheel. Those were the only real options at the time, so when Dan dropped the price to $650 for the custom wrapped wheel, I had to go for it.

Hop over to the Tennessee Tundra forum (Southeast region) to see some pics and get ideas. @00Tyler10 did some really cool color mods to his interior recently.
