Toyota is cooler than Chevy. That's all you need right there

Those dogs are great wild hog catch dogs when trained for it. Relentless. Also good about "their" family's protection.

The ol 5.3 is a pretty reliable engine, but seriously lacks balls. If you’re looking for a comparison, imagine that engine’s reliability combined with much bigger juevos.

I had an ‘07 new body style Sierra for multiple years. Loved that truck. Got me everywhere I wanted to go. I treated it like shit and it just kept going. But...

The Tundra is better. Not in the “GM sucks now” kind of way... More like, “well I’m probably going to have this truck for a while, and buy another when the time comes.”

Interesting to see Chevy so high and GMC so low. I've always viewed GMC as the more hardened, industrial and reliable brand of the two. Guess that view has shifted now. Some other surprises on that list as well. Honda/Acura is far lower than I would have expected, and BMW/Mini is quite a bit higher.

I traded in a 2006 Sierra 1500 w/ the 5.3 for my first Tundra (2015). The GMC had 106xxx miles when I traded it in. That truck was great and I never had a single problem with it. Why did I trade it, you ask....3.23 rear (GMC) vs 4.30 (Tundra). The Tundra just tows my boat better. Honestly, if I didn't have a boat to tow, I would've ended up buying another GM truck.

For the most part, trucks are bought for a specific purpose, your purpose should drive your decision.

I too was a lifelong Chevy person. After my wifes equinox ran a gallon of oil through it in 2 weeks we found out about a service bulletin stating such, a little to late. No help from gm with a blown engine. So we bought a rav4. Nice, dependable. 40k on it and only oil changes and a set of new tires. Then the van I was driving, Chevy at 200k the tranny started to grumble. We found our tundra and haven't looked back since. It is by far the nicest pickup I have ever had.

The only couple differences between the Silverado and the Sierra is sheet metal and creature comforts and the parts for the GMC are double the Chevy look underneath on a lift and you couldn’t tell them apart

I know more than one person that has switched from Chevy to Tundra. One was due to the rusting issues with his NEW Silverado that Chevy refused to do any thing about.

Personally, my opinion from 30 plus years of experience, Chevy will nickel and dime you to death. They very seldom have catastrophic failures but the little things add up quickly over time. Alternators. Water pumps. Dash clusters. Fuel pumps. Even Transmissions in the HD line.

I put 500k and 385k mi on 2 of my 2500 gas Chevys, but my last 2 half ton Chevys made me switch. I may go back to Chevy if I ever get a farm or a larger trailer to tow but I'm on my 2nd Tundra now and plan to run the wheels of it, IF that ever happens.

I have owned Chevy trucks since 1980. This time around I went with the Tundra double cab for 2 reasons. the rear seat in the Chevy extended cab is not fit for adults (and I want a 6.5’ bed) and the shit Chevy puts on their frames is worthless for preventing rust in the snow belt. I looked at 5 year old frames of both brands trucks and the Chevy’s were consistently significantly rustier.
I love the Tundra, absolutely no regrets.

You can get 400,000 out of Chevy if you want to keep throwing money at it.

I remember the first time I found a absolutely disintegrated plastic union in a coolant line in an old 3.4 V6. I thought.... WT.....

Dang, I forgot about my IP Cluster issue. All but one stepper motor failed and I missed the recall by like 10k miles. I ended up doing the repair myself dusting off my old soldering skills.

Chevy guy here! I owned chevy trucks my entire life. I trade up from an 04 to a 15 and regretted everyday. The 15 had electric issues and the transmission kick was absolutely absurd. The dealer told me its normal on all new half ton trucks except the Tundra. So, I test drove a Tundra and it reminded me of my 04. Enough technology to make life easier but felt like a true truck. I have been pretty happy with my decision and the only time I will go back to Chevy is when I can afford a dually duramax

Reliability, resale and the spacious Crew Max cab are why I have a Tundra. Yes, I'd like more payload and the super comfy seats that were in our 2005 GMC Yukon Denali (suburban), but its been flawless. Would buy another one.

I think an important piece of information that is missing from the equation is how the vehicle is being used. If the GMC's are being utilized in a harder work environment, they are going to break down more than the Chevy's that the soccer parents are driving.

Metrics are important, but can be skewed without all of the information. Just a thought...

Sorry no real data for you but I can relate.

GM all my life, sold my ‘09 Silverado 1500 LTZ with 173k on the odometer because it was on it’s last leg of life and the repairs were becoming uneconomical.

Picked up a ‘14 Tundra Limited with 171k on the odometer and it’s a fantastic truck with years worth of life remaining.

Vehicle usage and maintenance play a huge factor in this comparison. My Silverado led a rough life for what it’s worth.

Oh, and I’m a quality engineer employed by a fortune 100 company. So yeah, Toyota was an easy choice.

I have to admit I didn't understand the dual air controls when they came out, then my wife hit 50. An aha moment. We're well past that now though so it was safe to buy the SR5.

You will probably get better answers if you provide some more detail?

What do you want to use the truck for? What features/specs are important to you?

Why are you considering moving away from Chevy? What has you considering a Toyota?

All I can tell you is my last truck was a Chevy 1500 LS with every option except leather. Overall I liked the truck, especially when it was new but my problem with it (and every GM product I've ever had personally experience with) is they do not last well. Sure the engines and trannys are usually fine if taken care of but the rest of the vehicle will fall apart around it. Some of its minor (headliner falling down, trim pieces breaking or falling off. Some are more major like the aluminum transfer case cracking, AC controls and fan breaking. Hell the thermostat went tits up at 30k leaving me stranded on the side of the road. My experience with Toyota's have been the opposite.

Being an older guy who doesn't enjoy fixing cars any more, combined with how expensive cars/trucks have become, reliability is the #1 thing I care about and Toyota leads the industry for reliability. There was a list recently of the 10 most reliable cars in America and Toyota had 8 or 9 out of the top ten spots. Here is what Consumer reports has to say for 2019...

Here’s how the major car brands stack up in terms of reliability, according to Consumer Reports:

    1. Lexus
    2. Toyota
    3. Mazda
    4. Subaru
    5. Kia
    6. Infiniti
    7. Audi
    8. BMW
    9. Mini
    10. Hyundai
    11. Porsche
    12. Genesis
    13. Acura
    14. Nissan
    15. Honda
    16. Volkswagen
    17. Mercedes-Benz
    18. Ford
    19. Buick
    20. Lincoln
    21. Dodge
    22. Jeep
    23. Chevrolet
    24. Chrysler
    25. GMC
    26. Ram
    27. Tesla
    28. Cadillac
    29. Volvo

Toyota has the first 2 spots. Look where all the GM products are at? Hell you have to go all the way to 18th before the first US manufacturer shows up. That's why I only buy Toyota's now

We all have a good idea where the auto companies stack up in terms of reliability, short and long term. Their products have been on the market for decades and for some, almost, to over a century. So the hard data is out there.
What asking us brings, is what our opinion is, based on our experience. And mine is, well, based on my experience and my family and friends. When I started looking again for a new truck, about 6~7 years ago now, my old 2002 Tundra had been reliable to the point I wasn't thinking about it. I was busy looking at the F brand. Yea I wanted a sweet looking F150. I kept 'building' one on their website. Over and over. Saving up money. I think the first thing 'broke' on my old Tundra at the 15ish year mark. It had the you know what to actually spring a leak in the brake master cylinder. By then it also needed the steering linkage and it was leaking from the power steering so had those done. No complaints, it's 15. It was then I started thinking about that Tundra. And how I have only been doing fluids, brakes and tires, and driving it. It was under the radar because I didn't have to think about it. So I started reading online about the reliability of the F brand and my bubble burst. And I started 'building' Tundras online. 2 months shy of 17 years, I go pick up my mother's Prius from service at the dealer and see my next truck. Didn't need it, mine was fine. But I could swing it, and normally am quite frugal but really wanted something with GPS and some of the new things that modern cars have LOL. So despite having a perfectly good truck (it was due for tires again and needed a paint job but that's it) I bought the new one. I then sold my old one for more than I thought I could get (17 years old and still in demand). I am hoping to go 20 years on this truck, and based on past experience, it's not far fetched. The odds are really good it will last longer than you want to own it.

I was a chevy guy and bought a Toyota because of price alone. Didn't know shit about them.

Had it for 7 years and nothing went wrong.

    Bought them ever since.

Wife has had a Rav 4 for a little over 7 years and nothing has gone in it but the battery.
Brakes etc of course but no shop time
