Woke up to a bat flying around our room at 4:30AM. Wife wants me to catch it and send it off to get it tested for rabies. I want to catch and release. Anyone have experience?

Now to catch the little rascal.

Catch, release and put up some bat houses for them to live in.

Bats don’t actually carry rabies... they can contract it... it’s an old wives tale... just let the little fella leave and continue to protect you from all those nasty mosquitoes!

Try tossing some ice cubes out the door or window if it’s near one! As kids we would toss ice up in the air and watch them dive after them. Might work for you

Problem is, my wife is 34 weeks pregnant and works at a hospital. Protocol is to give everyone the rabies vaccination whether or not you feel like you've been bitten. Unless we can verify that the bat did not have rabies.

I know the benefits and importance of bats, so I definitely dont want to kill it.

You should be more scared of the rabies vaccines - yes, plural - shots, than that bat. Also, commend your bravery. Most importantly though, congratulations to you and wife on the incoming family modification. Better get your sleep while you can Batman,

Haha, thanks! My wife's argument to get it tested was the series of shots we'd have to get if it wasn't tested. At least now we have a chance of not having to. We also have a 2.5 year old so we haven't been getting sleep for awhile. Animal Control showed up 10 minutes after I caught it. They are sending it off to get tested. Apparently they would have sent it off regardless because it was in our room. It wasn't erratic or aggressive so my guess is that it didn't have rabies.

If she works in a hospital and you have a bat in the house and they expect you to get treated for rabies then that hospital needs more training before they open again.

You may want to hire competent staff after they shit can all the staff there.

Look for people that went to medical school to staff hospitals

Clearly the OP wanted the bat checked for rabies to be sure. Getting a bat checked out for rabies has nothing to do with actually getting bit by a rabid bat and going through the painful shot regimen.

Treatment for rabbies is a simple process these days, thankfully. About 15 years ago it was one shot in the arm once a week for a few weeks..
And no, i didnt have rabbies. It is just precautionary if the animal isnt found.

Since you caught the fella you probably wont have to get the vaccinations. I doubt its a carrier and after he is tested and cleared you're good to go.

Easy there. I'm not affiliated with the hospital, I work IT. So I'm not in charge of hiring for the hospital. I think it's just a precaution since getting rabies is 100% death for humans (unless vaccinated). I only read 1 case this morning where a person survived without vaccination, but she had to be put in a medically induced coma.

This is also why we sent it off to get tested. If it comes back negative, we are good. If its positive then we will get the shots (just as a precaution), because I want to continue to mod my Tundra. ;)

Interesting fun fact, apparently less than half of 1% of bats may have it.

Those are the type of odds you want to hear.

In my area, of the bats they have tested, 3% had rabies. Small but I also dont want to be part of that bracket unless its the income bracket.

Also rabies apparently isn't something you can just wait to get sick and then get the vaccine. Once it takes hold...

It's recommended to get treated or get the bat tested even if it didn't bite anyone?
    Is that a homemade mask?

Well, your area is really skewing the global average it seems.

3% is still well in the comfort zone, ya know. And the main thing is is you know what to do.

Still kinda scary, but you did the right thing by taking that picture and sharing it with us.
