Maybe they are just trolling for idiots. Customized Tundra at local dealer:

This 2016 Toyota Tundra has been customized here at our dealership with the Toyota of Rockwall Off Road Package. It's an Off Road enthusiast's dream and is ready to hit the trails. We've added the following options to make this truck Off Road Ready: A Front Suspension Level Kit, Iron Cross Bumpers with Winch/LED Lights, Color Match Wheel Pocket Flares, Alignment, TRD Front Grill, Predator Step rails, Oversize Off Road Tires, and a Blackout Kit.

I hardly think the above is worth the markup from $46,633 MSRP to $56,498 list price.

The dealers don't need us all to be idiots... they just need 1 idiot to buy it. And they eventually will find one

I honestly think they do. Or at least they assume/hope we are. There's usually one born every few minutes from what I hear.

There must be a lot of idiots out there because I am seeing more and more of these customized trucks at the dealerships. Obviously someone is buying them.

I tried to chat with him about the leveling kit. I asked if it was coilovers or spacers even though I know the answer. He was at lunch. I am going to try again later. No way I am leaving my call back info.

It's the same across the board. A dealership no matter what brand will do the same thing, the sad thing is people will buy them just because it doesn't look like the others on the lot. Plus you get the advantage of the factory warranty, because they installed the products.

So in the long run you may pay 10k for 5k worth of parts and accessories but you wont have to fight them to get something fixed under warranty. Just depends on how much $$$$ you wanna spend.

I think in general, the vast majority of buyers are not enthusiasts who know what else is out there... or how much the stuff the dealers put on the trucks are "worth." Like mentioned above, it just takes one, and guaranteed he/she is out there.

Every dealership across the country will do this if they're inclined to do so. I've seen Ford, Chevy, dodge, and Toyota dealerships do this with their trucks. I talked to a friend of mine who works at one, he said people will do stupid things if they have the money. Said this high school kid with a rich daddy bought a brand new Chevy 2wd and went to show his friends, brought it back and bought another Chevy in two days. Why? Because all his friends had 4wd trucks and he wanted one for that reason.

Another college frat boy bought a second to top trim package on a truck, brought it back in a week and bought another truck, same package, because his girlfriend didn't like the color.

if there are rich idiots out there (which we all know there are), you KNOW there're idiots out there who break the bank and eventually get their butts repossessed just because they want the top of the line or a super cool package that tacks on an extra 10K+ over what aftermarket products would cost them.

Just confirms what we all know.
    People are stupid.

It's also a convenience factor for the prospective buyer. Truck already looks cool and the cost of those upgrades are rolled into the car payment. So as long as the monthly payment is what the owner wants to pay, you just gained a cool looking truck with no extra effort of having to worry about how to save the $$ to do the upgrades later . . . like i'm doing now :(

Dealer has their markup too. Way too much on most instances; but that adds to the price as well. Most of know a good deal when we see one and wouldn't buy something like that. But some folks want the quick fix and jump all over these things.

Toyota is the only dealership here that doesn't customize trucks on the lot. But, the GM, Ford, and Ram all have a minimum of 3-4 trucks all lifted and marked up $10K+ And every few weeks, I'll notice those trucks are gone, and new customized ones are in place. People are buying them for sure...otherwise, the dealership wouldn't do it.

I enjoy having to save money and plan what's going to be done next; it gives me something to look forward to.

Yup, same concept when buying a brand new house. Builders charge like $30k to put in hardwood flooring downstairs when you can probably do it for $10k. But who wants to buy a new house and then wait another week or two while they tear up your new house to put flooring in. Plus you have to come up with the money to do yourself as opposed to adding it to the mortgage.

In business, you can list any asking price you want...... don't mean you gonna get it though.

Far more offensive than being taken for a fool on pricing, is extremely bad customer service, failure to return phone calls/voice mails/emails, shoddy paperwork, falsification of documents....

One reason I got a Toyota after 28 yrs of GM, was to punish GM for a whole lot of bad service. Sadly, I'm off to a really bad start with Toyota dealership on some basic stuff about customer service. So, now I'm concerned that I should never bring this new truck to the dealer I bought it from.

Here we are on a forum filled with many people who have spent 5 to 10k on modifications to perfectly good vehicles (I am one) and you're asking why someone might think we're idiots?

Seems like a reasonable evaluation to me!

Do I have regrets? Not really. Some folks spend 20K for a week at a resort and think it's a good deal. Most of us would be happier in a tent.

    Just saying

Different scenario. You are talking about parts that actually cost that much. Truck I am looking at may have $2k in parts with $8k markup.

I can see your point. However, $5k in their mods is different than $5k in our mods. Service, sales, and whoever else has to make a profit. It's a business- I get it.

Our $5k in mods may be tires/wheels, and a solid suspension lift (theirs is usually almost always spacers as you know) where their $5k in mod may include ProComp spacers, cheapest M/T they can get that is still a decent brand, and 20" wheels that some may or or may not care for.
That being said, if I was being lazy and didn't want to mess around with purchasing all the above, and wanted it for mainly aesthetic I would consider theirs.

I did my financing at the dealer, a credit union I do business with, got 6 yrs at 3.07% with about 40-50% down payment via trade in. So, the rate seemed just a little high.

But they put a page down saying that if I made my first years payment on time, they'd lower it 1%. And if I made every payment on time the 2nd year, they'd lower it another 1%. Ok, who'd argue with that right?

A few days later the Credit Union calls and leaves a vm and says they don't know what the dealer was thinking, because that program is for distressed borrowers and I don't qualify.

Gee, how convenient right? I sign a legally binding contract with the dealer that I'm obligated, but now they are like....sorry dude....

So, do I push the issue, or accept their excuse that this was "an honest mistake"? Something tells me this might be a typical scam, and nobody complains about it?

Skip forward a month and there will be a new intro thread with message #1 of the discussion saying:

"Hey guys, new to the site. I just got a great deal on a modded Tundra. The dealership threw on a Front Suspension Level Kit, Iron Cross Bumpers with Winch/LED Lights, Color Match Wheel Pocket Flares, Alignment, TRD Front Grill, Predator Step rails, Oversize Off Road Tires, and a Blackout Kit..........."

And we'll all say, "Welcome to the site, sounds like you got a great rig there....."

    Flux capacitor!
Personally I don't care if the dealership charges 10k for 5k of parts. I just choose NOT to buy my trucks with extras from the dealership. They are in business to make money and I don't blame them. Most of the people on this forum can probably invision what they would want to add to their truck to make it there own. Unfortunately some people don't have the ability to create something or know how. So they would rather just pay the dealer to have a truck they already like and not have to figure it on their own. One of my best friends is a general manager of a Toyota dealership and they customize 10-30 vehicles on a weekly bases. Most people just want instant gratification and a certain payment amount.

What's crazy about the dealerships is when they pull off the stock parts a lot of it goes in the trash! Something's like bumpers get re sold but the stock grills usually get tossed out.

I bought a 2013 Tacoma that the dealership put extras on. They put a brush guard, bigger wheels and tires, side steps, they debadged it, blacked out the grill, pretty much made it look badass. First thing the salesman did when I said I wanted it, was grab the extra sheet of paper taped to the window which listed the parts and extra money it would tack onto the price of the vehicle, and he wodded it up and threw it in the back of the truck. Said, "we're not gonna worry about that".

Saw that truck last night and the LSU truck next to it I laughed when I looked at the sticker. I guess we are neighbors I'm over in Forney.

yep we are neighbors. Sticker is definitely laughable. Do you take your vehicle there for service? I did for free oil changes and to replace a shock under warranty but will not go back. Manager even called and asked for my business after I gave their service department a zero.

This is my first post here on tundras.com. I am currently looking at Tundras as I plan on purchasing one in a month or two. I was at my local stealership (Toyota of Alvin) a couple of days ago and was looking at this 1794:
    http://www.toyotaofalvin.com/new/Toyota/2016-Toyota-Tundra-2fc3d5e00a0e0a6b2f4f287b86ea040d.htm
The reason why I am posting on this thread, is due to the price that they are asking. This is a 4x4 1794 model with a Rough Country 6 inch lift, 20" Fuel rims, 35's and motorized step up bars, flares and VPP package. Beyond these add ons, it's a stock 1794. And these jackasses are asking $76,000!!!! Now, I've been doing my homework and according to my math that's about $6,500.00-7,500.00 of upgrades on a $47,000.00 truck, or am I missing something? Yeah, I will be purchasing my Tundra from somewhere else. Ridiculous. BTW, I currently am driving a heavily modified 4Runner and some of you may know me from T4R.org. Anyway, glad to be here and am excited about getting my Tundra and turning it into my dream truck. Can you say Supercharger?

Welcome Adam. Yeah, $76k is ridiculous. How were their prices on non-upgraded tundras?

Yup, go find a stock 1794 (if that's the base model you want) and mod it yourself...
