Just had my truck fail at Checkered flag and the dealer is giving me a whole bunch of BS for rear fog, Front LED fog lights, and bad battery. My service advisor has take a loooong vacation and the truck has been passing inspection for the past 3 years ive been going to the dealer. The battery was purchased from toyota about a year ago so how can they say its bad, if it is, they should replace it for free, so that sounds like a scam. The LED fog lights, its the OEM housing but the bulb was LED, nevertheless ive been passing with those for the past 3 years. The back up LED Fogs, i can probably remove the fuse and get it inspected again. I was looking for some advise and asisstance with this issue. My truck i needed some amo to fight these Ludacris claims.

I think i may be in the same boat as you with the rear bumper lights, but they also rejected me for my LED front fogs, and bad battery. The battery is a complete lie, i bought it at the dealer a year ago so its under warranty. Wanted to see if you have any suggestions.

Not sure about front fogs, but if you have any that aren’t legal just cover it with tape. I had a light bar on top of my truck years ago and it failed in va. The law there is no light above the headlights. So I just covered it with tape and it passed. There are also covers you can buy.

Why would a battery fail your whole truck on inspection? Never heard that.

You got me there, no idea why they would fail for bad battery, but the best part is its an OEM battery with a 5 year warraty that they should have seen by doing simple math and would not have failed.
As far as covering it with tape, i think i was reading that it will not work and will fail if its not manufactures covering. VA is a pain in the A$$ when it comes to inspection.

Here is the code from VA

    Inspect for and reject if:

    1. Auxiliary lamp is being used for a purpose other than for which it is manufactured or previously approved by the superintendent.

    2. Auxiliary lamp does not have a clear lens.

    3. Any reflector in such auxiliary lamp device is not clear.

EXCEPTIONS: An auxiliary lighting device that is both covered and unlit shall not be considered for inspection. An auxiliary lighting device that has a clear lens, has clear reflectors, and is unlit shall not be considered for inspection. Fog and driving lamps mounted below the level of the regular headlamps must be checked for aim as outlined in subdivisions I 12 h and 13 f of this section if not covered.

NOTE: The covers shall be a type that would be installed as original equipment and not tape, paper bags, aluminum foil or similar materials.

When I covered mine with tape, I had it inspected by “that guy” who was at a local gas station in Springfield, va. He did do the inspection, but was maybe more lenient than he could have been. Right after that I was pulled over by a va trooper and then just got covers from Amazon for about $20.

It sounds like your dealer is looking for some more work and $ from you.

Battery isn't an inspection item. If they're failing you for the battery you might want to give the state police a call.

WOW and I thought NY inspections were bad. Sounds like VA wants you to bend over backwards to pass. Since they're not pulling over for equipment violations anymore in VA, why bother with the inspection program?

Have to get it inspected to register it. I just moved from va to ny and it is a pain to do, but my only issue in va was the light bar. I even had headers, sc, and high flow cats and still passed emissions. I got the 18 before moving to ny and no issues so far.

NY is far less strict on lighting. Must be DOT approved for headlights and auxiliary lights must have their own switch...

Its absolute BS, they just called me and told to they could care less, call the State Police and deal with that. That is the issue here in VA, they hire these a$$ clowns to work on peoples cars that should not be anywhere near anything that requires critical thinking and common sense. Use youtube for their instructions and now they are master mechanics....
What really sucks is i have to remove all these bulbs and waste more time with a reinspect.

I think they put you in some system that any inspector can look up, but can you try another inspection place and ask them if it was all bs? A different place might pass you or just tell you to cover the lights.

Doing away with them altogether has been discussed by state government. It amounts to an "unfair burden" on the lower income groups. Some stuff is picky, but I can't imagine what kind of unsafe junk would be on the roads if inspections go away.

The idea of inspections is good, or else there would be a lot of unsafe cars driving around next to your wife and kids. But some have gone too far.

That is BS. Find an independent, they're usually not as anal.

BTW, Tidewater Tundras has a meet at 0930 on Halloween, at the Duck Donuts on Battlefield.

I took your advice and contacted the state Trooper, they were dumbfounded that the dealer would even go after the battery, they can understand the LED bulb, but even then, it passed for the previous three years..

Unfortunately, no social media(that is the devil...lol) so i did not know. I will make plans to be there for sure. I remember my last time with the meet was about couple years ago, and met some wonderful people.
