I have had BF K02 on my truck almost a year 275 60 20. I noticed that a big chunk was missing from the tread down to the chord. I took it to the tire shop I bought it from and they said it's not a defective tire.

The good is that they will replace it pro rated to a years use which is about $255 credit for a new tire. That means i'm on the hook for the remainder plus install which will be about $100.

Has any one had any problems like this with the K02, also is it worth it to ask BF (michelin) to cover cost of tire or is it a waist of time?20180530_093909.jpg

I had that problem with BFG Rugged Trail (chunk missing in less than one year). My local tire shop people told me this was not a problem (but mine was not as deep as yours). From what I've read, BFG tires have tendency to do this.

For comparison, I've had my Nitto Trail Grappler for 3 & 1/2 years without any chunks missing.

I had KOs on my pro and never had this happen.
Although it does appear you hit something to knock/tear a piece out.

It does kinda look like I hit something. I have never taken it off road. Maybe hit the curb while parking but I don"t remember anything. You think it would be a thud to do that.

I've read on forums KO2's require re-balancing more often, and they can chunk off. I guess this is what they mean, no idea how common.
Sorry to have this happen to you.

    None, yet....
Ditto. On 2nd set with 5-6 other buddies running them on my recommendation over the last handful of yrs and no issues.

OP, those look a bit dry rotted. Can you check the born date? Common problem with tire shops is to keep tires forever and contrary to popular belief, rubber outgasses and becomes hard/brittle. Then they sell them to someone and have nothing but issues.

I've had bfg ko's and ko2's. A bunch of sets of each and I've never had or seen this happen.

So I seen you had 35s in the KO2's....how many miles you get out of them? and have any had balancing issues? i know this is an older post, but i'm one of the few that utilize the search function. lol. but i have them in a 32" tire now, and will go to 35s once these wear out. i'm at 37k with no issues whatsoever. just curious if the 35s are hard to balance. also, did you get the 121r or 121q rated tires? thanks in advance!

I'm going on about 20K miles on 'em. I have no issued with balance; will need to see how many oz I have on 'em compared to other brands. Will have to see what rate they are.

whenever you could that would be great! i am pretty much dead set on them, but when i start researching more, my mind starts to change! lol. all i've done with mine and plan on doing with my 35s is rotate them every 5k miles and keep properly inflated. seems some people run them at really high pressure. 95% of my driving is on the highway, but need them once in a while with the 4wd to get around some places. thanks again

I chatted with BFG directly on what would be the right PSI and they calculated with tire size and vehicle (they recognized that the stock Tundra can't use 35 tires without a lift) should be at 40 PSI.

so i generally do a bit under max pressure. so if max pressure says 55 psi, i would run around 45 psi or so. i would usually go back and look at tread pattern, drive in dirt, etc to see how the pressure was dispersed throughout the tire too.

You can run either 35x12.5 or 315/70 on rock warriors wheels without a lift. KO2s

I haven't used KO2's but I have run KOs for many years on my previous Toyotas and while I have lost chunks of tread on them that looked as if someone with a primitive flint knife had attacked my tires, it was never down to the cords. Maybe it was the volcanic rocks out here that can cleave into sharp edges, doing a number on my tires. I must admit, I only ran the BFGs offroad to any degree so have nothing else to compare them to. That was always one of the things I didn't like about them, along with flinging rocks into the wheel wells and lousy mud performance (but they were great in snow). That looks like you really hit something seriously sharp and/or tough.

Im running 275/65/20 nitto terra grapplers and the max psi says 80.... I thought that was really high, the local shop that installed them put them at 34. My tundra is a pavement princess so I just want to get the most life out of these as possible lol
