Anyone here with a campershell register their truck as passenger vs commercial? How much of a hassel was it vs the saving cost. My topper is on year round.

I’ve heard it’s a few hundred off. Not sure how hard it is to change, but I want to say that you have to go to the dmv and prove that it’s permanent :notsure:

I got a camper shell on as well and it is permanent. Never comes off. Wonder if I can do this through AAA. Since they handle lots of other DMV issues.

Paying commercial fees is a pain in the ass, but I park in loading areas even though I’m not loading and unloading LOL might as well use it for something :anonymous:

I think it would be worth checking into. I think it’s around $150-200 off (don’t quote me on that amount though LOL)

Interested in this as well....Especially after the registration fees went up last year. It’s ridiculous how much we have to pay every year now!

Along the same lines so i'll jump on here.
Who's running passenger tags vs weighted tags?
I'm in NC and I'm subject to weighted plates in this state. The Tundra does come in under 6k and I only tow my camper, so technically I'm exempt from a weighted plate in NC.

From what ive read on TW its about $100-$150 saving. Have to get it changed at the dmv. Just dont get pulled over with the topper off since it will be a different classification. Hefty fine I believe.

Oh damn, I forgot how much the DMV charges there. Registration for my truck here in Oregon is only $112.

    For 2 years.

Following. Mine was $750 this year.. They tacked on an additional $175 for “road work”...
I got a shell and I do not plan on removing it..
I believe that if you have a hard cover it’s the same.. Just read somewhere. No real data to show for it.

    Don't think it's possible:

Pickup (CVC §471)—A pickup is a motor truck with a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of less than 11,500 pounds, an unladen weight of less than 8,001 pounds, and equipped with an open box-type bed less than nine feet in length. California Code of Regulations, Title 13 §150.04 further defines pickup trucks:

    (a) Pursuant to CVC §471, any motor vehicle, except a motorcycle, motorized bicycle, or motorized quadricycle, with an open box-type bed not exceeding 9 feet in length is by definition a pickup. Examples of this type of motor vehicle include the Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Nissan Frontier, and similarly designed vehicles.

    (b) Pursuant to CVC §471, any motor vehicle, except a motorcycle, motorized bicycle, or motorized quadricycle, that may be configured or reconfigured to provide an open box-type bed not exceeding 9 feet in length is by definition a pickup. Examples of this type of motor vehicle include the Chevrolet Avalanche and similarly designed vehicles.

According to Challenger1, there are special circumstances: "pickup with a camper permanently attached". Wondering if anyone was able to use that rule.

You cannot change it in CA unless you have a sleeping area permanently mounted and running water accessible in the bed. I tried to change mine immediately when i bought mine and the DMV printed out the law but i was so pissed off i threw it away on the way out If was registered prior to 2016 as non commercial it stays that way until sold
