Also so if Toyota advertises that their trucks will last for 15 years and 200,000 miles before the frame rots out then let's see how many people buy Toyota Tundras and tacomas. I've had over 5 Toyotas in 20 years .I never had a frame rot issue until the last two trucks that I bought. I have recorded voice conversations with toyoya employees that sprayed my truck in 2014 saying that Toyota really screwed up and used Chinese frames instead of Dana corp frames so please don't try to JustifyToyota's actions! Do your research and look at all the people that are struggling with the rotted frame issues that cannot get their trucks fixed!

No Jerry is a happy Toyota owner that has 2 toyotas with no rust and knows how to inspect a vehicle before I buy one. You bought a rusted out truck and want someone else to pay for your mistake. Did your frame rust out during the warranty period? Nope. Did Toyota make right with their recall? Yes. They recalled frames that didn't even start to rust until after the warranty was expired.
That is better than what Ford did to me. 3 year old F250 bought new by me had the rear doors rotting off. Truck never saw salt ever. Ford said wasnt a concern. That's when I bought my Tundra.
My Sequoia is not going to rust out anytime soon. I ran a boroscope (camera) in its frame before it was cleaned and coated. It looked great and yes I know what to look for. I work with steel all day long in my job.
Like I said before. How long do you think a manufacture is liable for this. Do you want Goodyear to replace 15 year old dry rotted tires? See how silly this sounds?

BTW, I did do my research, since I have a Sequoia that I was concerned about when all the media hype hit.

You're trying to compare a 2004 Tundra frame to a 96 Ford F-150 corner panel? Why don't you look at the stats Cherry instead of trying to justify Toyota's actions and practices. Why don't you call the national traffic and highway safety administration and find out about all the rotted frames that they are trying to rectify as I type this .just because you had no prior experiences with Toyota does it mean hundreds if not thousands of other Toyota owners haven't

No, I'm saying metal rusts and doesn't last forever. I have owned more than 2 toyotas in my life time. I have experience with them as well. Maintenance goes a long way too. Leave carbon steel sit in saltwater and see how long it lasts vs the same carbon steel in the desert.
Yes it sucks. But it's reality.
I'm not attacking you, but you seem to be taking my first post way to personally.
Have a good day. I've got work to do.

Tundras and Sequoias share many common components including the majority of the frame. And yes my wife drives my kids to soccer and so do I. I guarantee you, I'm not a soccer Mom though. Let's try to keep this civil, or you can be removed from this site. Any of us can be. I'm not your enemy here, just stating some facts and some opinions.

There's 97-06 Jeep Wranglers have rotted out frames and Jeep hasn't offered anything besides "should've washed it better"

Chevy/GMC 25/3500 have been cracking frames for years and little to no help from them.

This isn't just a Toyota problem.

Again it sucks but you're going to run out of money fighting Toyota long before they do.

I'd put the blame on this mostly on that mechanic in 2015 who said everything looked ok. There's no way that amount of decay set in over the past 3&1/2 years. This is a 15 year old truck you're talking about. You can get upset with Toyota, but for a truck that old, there isn't much they can do. I suspect if that truck had been sprayed starting in the first year of ownership and was given follow up sprays, you could possibly have a case against the company that manufacturers the spray you used. As for going after Toyota, I'm not sure what you expect to happen here. Dodge trucks are notorious for rusting as well. What do people do? The find a different manufacturer to buy from. I apologize if I'm coming across as terse, but again, you're driving an old truck and you live in the Northeast.

If the frame rot was strictly an age of truck and NE related issue then why did Toyota spray the trucks at all. Wasn’t spraying the trucks an intrinsic admission and understanding there was an issue and associated liability. Toyota doesn’t spend $$ unless there is a reason. Of course I am biased since I own one of these turds but I think it was a half ass attempt at covering up an expensive issue to fix. I agree I should have taken a better look but tough to do with a remote purchaser like me. In case my bad purchase doesn’t mean that the frames don’t have a problem as evidenced by Toyota spraying them.

It's a gamble for them, it was a stop gap to hopefully fend off another class action lawsuit. They can say "we tried but you know salt rusts things" coupled with the fact that people don't typically own cars for 10+years and hope the problem goes away.

I would dump it but I dont own trucks that old for that long.

I stopped buying used because I dont like buying someone elses headache

I worked on cars and trucks in the morning just to get them to start so I could go to work. Rigged them to make it one more day

It starts fucking up I trade them in for what ever they give me and buy a new one.

I have AAA in case I get a flat or need a tow.

I got real lazy after 30 years of wrenching on someone elses junk

I've seen frames look like that but that are still solid. Take a hammer to it and see if you make any holes. If it doesn't wire brush everything and spray it with something like Eastwood Rust Encapsulator or POR15 then check it up every year.

If you find a few holes assuming they aren't terrible, weld some plate in and do the same as above after.

If you find a lot of holes, weigh the cost of doing a frame replacement on your own vs buying a new truck, maybe see if Toyota would throw you a deal on a percentage off of parts if you decide to swap it yourself. Realistically a $10k frame swap is still 1/4 the price of a brand new truck.

I have banged on it. Lots of debris but only one small hole by front cross member. I was going to do just what you suggested. I found some rust converting stuff with good reviews called Cooreseal. $50/gal. I am open to ideas of how to treat inside of square frame.

The reason I asked is I was going to lift the truck with a rcd lift I already own ($2K)

Honestly other than the rusty frame the truck is near flawless for age.

Leaning towards treating it and keeping. I’m sure it will last 4 or 5 more years here in Texas where we don’t have salt on roads.

    Still interested in other opinions.

    Thanks

For the inside areas, I've not used it but it gets good reviews from the Jeep crowd.

Yes I brought a 2002 tundra brand new off road package cab with half door silver sky metallic its beautiful truck, I paid cash $27,500. Flew up to Buffalo New York to get the color I wanted back in September 2002 go back to Jersey I have 233,000 miles as of today. (Just shy of the average miles to the moon) I had my frame spray too back in 2014 my mechanic notice this past spring a quarter size hole in frame he said he was a little afraid if I hit a bad pothole something might happen, went back to dealer who sprayed the truck and said to bad truck is 17 years old. I was bummed still drive it around town. Looking into a new one I can't see any other vehicle out there that meets I'm looking for in the truck truthfully I would love to just restore this back to its original looking into seeing if someone's does that full restoration I love the size of this truck we'll see I'll keep you informed

I can't ever remember reading about someone having a frame replaced after the coating was done. Possibly if you had one of the recalled years (00-03 for the rear crossmember) never had that looked at, then later it passed the frame test for the CRC coating, then after that the rear crossmember rotted enough, it could be replaced.

I have 2002 Tundra 4X4 with 307k miles. Took to mechanic to check fuel performance problem. My Truck frame cracked and broken in half while on the lift. Truck frame was "inspected and frame spray treated in 2012. The dealer and Toyota corporate said my case was "closed". What can I do with my truck now?

Something seems off about some of these posts, but how many people really expect a 15+ year old truck frame to be replaced for free?

I can see your point but I also know that these frames were a disaster. If someone has a 15 year old truck that's otherwise in immaculate shape it doesn't seem fair that it should be a total loss because of Toyota's mistake.
If you look at the post above it's obvious that Toyota must have sprayed right over existing rust. There is no way this problem happened after 2012. So in his case, he never got fair compensation. What they should have done is replace the frame under recall rather than try to cover it up.

Age really shouldn't matter when this was a known issue. People impacted should get 1 frame replacement and be on their own after that. Toyota doesn't get to spray over rust and then claim it's been "resolved."

It really sounds like you are out of options unfortunately. They should have never sprayed your truck in 2012.

There are at least 4 Toyota dealers in Northwestern NJ. I wonder how many other Tundras had their frames sprayed, rather than being replaced. Is there a class action lawsuit? I was commuting 50 miles a day up until Thursday 5/23/19, a scheduled appointment with my mechanic on Friday 5/24/19.
I also located a 2001 Tundra SR5 4X4 Access cab that had its frame replaced 4 years ago under the same recall!

Newbie to the party. Question I have, was this related to specific years of Tundras or is it still happening?

00-08 Tundra. 00-03 has a recall for rusting rear crossmembers, 00-08 had/have a limited service campaign for frame inspection.

Details for 07-08 are in this link. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10154792-9999.pdf
