    2 questions I have:
    1) How do either tank setups (LRA and Transfer Flow) hold up in northern climates where road salt is used? With plastic tanks you don't have to worry about rust obviously. I know line-x and using certain types of metals can help mitigate rust, but IME rust still sets in eventually.
    and
    2) Is there any sort of maintenance (change out interval) for the fuel pump and filter associated with using these tanks?

Sounds like questions you should ask the manufacturer. I don't know about the Northern climate issue with salt and rust. But the fuel pump has an integrated filter on the 3rd gens. I never had to do anything but take the old fuel pump and slap it into the new tank... I don't see why you would need to do anything different maintenance-wise. You are just changing the reservoir for the fuel... I guess just make sure it is clean...

I didn't know if LRA (or its US distributor) was lurking on here; if so, hopefully they provide some feedback.

I've read in some install write-up's (specifically one on Expedition Journal's website) that because the tank is metal as opposed to plastic, the OEM fuel filter needs to be replaced at a certain interval as per LRA's recommendations.

The construction quality and capacity are huge attractions in my view, but if there is the added potential for rust and increased maintenance with LRA tanks that may be a deal-breaker for some.

Good to have the australian option. They build a great front bumper for the Tundra (ARB). Best I can tell, the Transferflow 46 gallon frame mount gas tank is DISCONTINUED. Might find one old stock somewhere??? My Transferflow has served me well. No problems in 10 years.

You already have what I think is the best tank for true off road use from what I’ve read
Just buy a skid plate and if you really need 600 miles of range load 2 Jerry cans for those rare occasions especially if your wheeling thru the dunes

    Below is my personal take...

26 gallon plastic tank sucks (I have one currently and it’s going away one way or another) I checked it for when it would actually run out at about 310 miles
Or 286 miles on my odometer with 35s Prior to doing the calculations

38 gallon OEM plastic tank with an RCI or TRD plate is best for off-road
    And CA carb ok

    Even if you don’t off-road
46 LRA or Transfer Flow is freakin heavy and hangs down too low
I don’t care how strong it is that set up is asking for trouble if your off road especially with a long wheel base Tundra

That being said if someone really wants to upgrade and they just got have 46 gallons LMK I will buy your 38 gallon in two seconds

I offroad regularly (2-3 times a month) with my TFT. Steep stuff, flat stuff, rocky stuff, smooth stuff, sandy stuff, packed stuff... NEVER stuffed the tank into anything. It's still perfect. I'm not rock crawling, but I do go places things this big typically don't go.

Not sure the GB ever happened, there was a coupon on the TFT though.

Was this the $200 coupon? I thought I saw that a while back

I would really love to get a bigger tank than the 26 gallon, but spending 1600+ is stopping me...

I think it was the $200 off. I already have one, so I wasn't really paying that much attention.

Yeah, it's expensive. SUPER nice though. Worth it IMO. I live in FL right now and it's great to have almost 700 miles of range for hurricane evacuations.

    are you getting almost 700 miles with a 5.7 or a 4.6?

    5.7

Full to empty at highway cruising speed 100% of the time will get me about 800 miles. I live in a small town and drive like 9 miles to work, so I get just under 700 miles from full to fuel light.

So I did more research and upgrading my 26 gallon tank to a 38 gallon OEM tank was going to be too jerry rigged of an install for my tastes. The amount of retrofitting and cost although lower was unacceptable for me, so sorry for my strong feelings in previous post. Mucho Sorry

Although if I had a 38 gallon I still would leave good enough alone because your only gaining 8 gallons.

    Drum roll please

I ended up installing a TFT and I’m super stoked because it nearly doubled my range going from a 26r

I installed some Demello Steel Dominator rock sliders and I think between the sliders and how strong the tank is that I will be fine

On my truck the tank is higher than rear diff, muffler and drive shaft.

I’m thinking the front 1/3 even though it’s below the frame a bit will be protected by the sliders in most situations

And I also don’t plan any rock climbing lol

Just wondering but when has a smog center every inspected our gas tank in california? On my last smog they don't even plug a smog sniffer in the tail pipe anymore, they just plug a hand held device into the obd2 reader and tell you if you pass or fail. I was scratching my head but the worker said thats all that they do now for "newer" cars, my truck is a 2007.

I have really only driven newer cars or AWD vehicles that are difficult to smog on rollers. I have seen them do a walk around the car with a mirror before plugging in to the OBD2, but I always had aftermarket exhaust, so that probably caused them to break out the mirror. One thing you should consider is that you can see the tank from the rear wheel well. It definitely looks aftermarket and may cause them to question it. If they do, you're in for a lot of work.

Possible stupid question, is the LRA tank baffled internally like the Transfer Flow and is it set up to run with the EVAP system?

But you can see the stock gas tank as well from rear wheel well. I saw previous post of people talking about how the aftermarket tanks sits below the frame and how they don't like brand x or brand y, but just yesterday I kneeled down and looked at the factory 26 gal tank and it sits below the frame as well. I feel like the tanks that get the black line-x treatment, it blends in pretty well.

The stock gas tank looks like a stock gas tank. This does not look like a stock gas tank at all. You might be able to get away with it though. Give it a shot. If you can install it yourself, you'll only be out your time if they ask you to fix it. Not sure TFT will ship to CA though. Last I heard, they weren't shipping any inside the state.

    TIME TO CHECK IN
I/we have not been on the forum for some time and wanted to respond to some of the comments over the last 18 months. We had a business name change from Cruiser Brothers to Long Range America as we rearranged the firm to only sell Australian fuel tanks (and a few rear bumpers for Toyotas).
    1. Glad one of you had a good experience with the LRA Tundra tank. We are proud of the product and it seems to meet the needs of many.
    2. Sorry my service/support did not meet the needs of others.
    3. We tried to put together a group buy to get the freight cost down on pre-orders but as the prior poster observed, the delivered service was less than acceptable. Again, my regrets, but it is a combination of too many moving parts and (at the time) a young company with a challenged manager (that would be me).
    4. Since we started bringing these in, we realized that consistent advance orders to put product in the pipeline and on our shelf was the best way to meet the needs of our potential customers and that is how we have been selling and serving the marketplace for the last year or so.
    5. We have worked on product development, improved customer/dealer support and promotion through the offroad and desert adventure communities and now offer over 60 kits in North America for Toyota, Jeep, Mercedes Sprinter, Dodge Ram, Chev Silverado, Nissan Frontier and other makes/models.
    6. LRA tanks are now sold through over 30 dealers across USA and Canada.
    7. We appreciate direct, honest and open communication and have used some of that to develop new instruction document for the Tundra kit and it will fit any four-door model from 2007 to 2020. See attached - our instructions, tech support, etc. are the result of collaboration and communications and we are grateful for the support of our customers and partners.
    8. As for me, we sold the house and moved the business to Idaho but I am still kind of a dick sometimes - but working on being nicer, more effective, more organized. If you give us a try, I will try and do a good job for you.
    9. Stay safe and take care of yourselves and family in these trying times.
    Cheers,

    Ward Harris

welcome to the forums and thank you for your transparency. I was just reading over this thread today and bam, here you are. So, I understand these tanks are not legal to install in California, but is it still possible to receive delivery of the tank to my residency in califirnia?

Does that mean we can pick up the tank in Idaho and not worry about shipping/freight? If yes - what part of Idaho?

    Quick question for the group.

Is there a better fuel pump to install? Any other mods or upgrades to suggest while the tank is out?
