I go up and over Teton Pass most days for work. The grade is very steep, 10% in some parts. When descending I always gear down to 3rd or 2nd gear to slow the truck down. Since the truck is so heavy I still use the breaks more than I want. Is there a controller out there to further assist the transmission to slow me down? Driving this grade is working the hell out of the truck. In the Fall I am purchasing a lighter commuter car.

Not that I’ve heard of. Put the truck in Tow Haul, that could help but not much. Sounds like you’re doing everything right.

agree with the tow haul, I do believe that does change a few settings to help with the engine breaking and yes, sounds like you are doing everything right with downshifting to allow the engine to slow itself and still using brakes when needed.

I will try tow haul mode, I know when ascending tow haul mode kicks ass! I guess it's time to look for a good commuter car. Pass is working the tuck hard on the descents. Does putting the motor in compression cause excess engine wear? I know I Force 5.7 ltr is bulletproof.

I like to jokingly call decelerating the motor setting the rings. LOL

I just got back from a trip to the Smokeys and I somewhat experienced the same thing. I would ride down the mountain sides in a low gear but still had to brake a fair amount. Not nearly as much as I'd have to in my car though, and my car is a stick.

Is it hard on the engine? I suppose more so than just idling along, yeah, probably. Is the added wear really that appreciable? Don't know.

Well I only plan to do this commute using truck this Summer. Getting a VW TDI Golf this Fall. Truck will become my weekend warrior and gnarly weather pass days. Until then I will grin and bare it and keep gearing it down.

That's a nasty pass...I remember going over that in my gen 1 tundra with a camper and ATV trailer. I had to almost come to a complete stop multiple times just to get it from getting away from me. Beautiful though!

Been in Jackson for 25 years and I still avoid the pass whenever I can. Feel for folks having to drive it daily. Very hard on trannys and breaks. I’ve seen your truck in town, it’s a sweet ride.

Yeah I became one of those commuters. Getting used too it but still sucks. @gladecreekwy we should meet be fun to drive some backwoods roads. Been on some killer back roads in Hoback junction area. But still don’t really know where to go.

Absolutely. First thing go to the FS office in town and buy the National Forest maps that cover the Jackson district. The Gros Ventre road will be completely open soon. 35 miles of awesome dirt plus miles of side roads. The Greys River road that starts in Alpine is one of my favorites. Over 80 miles of dirt all the way to Labarge Wyoming. 75264F81-411C-4832-8AC4-B128250CCF63.jpg
