Was my filter changed at the dealer?

So I was at the dealer today for my 10,000 service. I took before and after pics of the filter housing. Is this evidence the filter was not changed? Or am I being paranoid... I ALWAYS change my own own oil but have let the dealer do it with the 24 mos service freebie. I have never had a vehicle with the cartridge filter before so not sure if I'm looking at this correctly. To me... this should have some finger prints or something indicating this was removed. It looks like it wasnt touched. What do you think?

Based on the marks on the filter cap I’m going to say it wasn’t changed. Do yourself a favor and skip the “freebies”. IMO it isn’t worth the headache.

To me I believe it was changed. Look at what I circled, it looks like a different position. No fingerprints because they wear rubber gloves now.

Ok cool. Thanks for your perspective. I thought there ought to be prints or something wearing off the oily dust.

I learned a lesson from this type of scenario, I used a colored sharpie and made a mark on the out side of the filter housing to filter area and engine block, ya I had to crawl under the truck to do it, but my dealership said they did it and actually did not do it. When questions were asked they said the oil was not changed either. I'm like what was the point of bringing it in then. I did get some scratches on my drivers door on that appointment, I cryed foul, and took it home and did the oil change my self.
Later they did a hack job of a repaint on my drivers side door.

Do the oil changes your self and ride with confidence it's done properly.

Get to know the folks at your dealer. I know by name and they know me. We text and stay in touch. I have the same tech work on my truck. No issues except the hourly rate is a bit much. Still, trust factor is worth it.

You should use the liquid to check if the bolts move. And place some on the filter housing. To make sure unless they have the same color. Then i dont know

Dude. This sounds EXACTLY like what I just went through. Took to dealer for an issue, they returned with big deep scratch in drivers side door, had cheap ass paint job done which caused $2K more damage. I just now finished up a 4 month long battle to get it resolved.

Here's what I did. I went to a shop that I wanted and knew the did top notch work, got and estimate and TOLD them either you go where I picked (In my case they did the same thing three times)or my lawyer would be calling them. I won got what I wanted. My truck had 8, 10,15k miles. Nobody should put up with that BS.
I hope your as happy as I am. These days you have to stand up for your selfs or your mowed over. Sorry I didn't mean to hi jacked your thread.

Just the fact that an owner has to question whether or not a service was done is enough to either find a reputable place you can absolutely trust and pay for the service or know 100 percent it’s done right and do it yourself.
Most dealers suck. End of story.

When I did my first oil change I needed a wrench to remove the filter housing. There looks to be nothing disturbed on the filter housing. The filth on the bolt seems to be maybe the camera flash over exposing, and thus washing out, the bolt. I would guess that it wasn’t changed

Yeah my truck had less than 5K miles when it happened. Went from a scratch through the paint on my driver door... to overspray on wheels, steps, door handles, door seals, and damaged the clear protectors on the edge of the doors by sanding them or painting clear over them. Whoever they sent it to apparently didn’t tape off anything. It was REALLY bad.

After a few weeks of the GM dodging me after saying he would look into it, I went to a dealership up near me with an awesome collision center and got a repair estimate on my own. Sent it to original dealer and told them i wanted it done there. They gave me sh*t so i Filed a complaint with Toyota corporate. Toyota called them, they call me acting like they dunno the story and said they would be sending a check to this collision center. 3 months go by and the collision center had been helping me this whole time by playing middle man, because to be honest I didn’t want to even speak to this dealership anymore. After 3 months I spoke to collision center again and suggested maybe we goto corporate a 2nd time... which i did.

    12/21/18 —
Went to pick up truck (because they originally put the wrong lift on) and found deep scratch in drivers door

    1/11/19 —
picked up truck with butchered paint job

    4/19/19 —
Finally got my truck fixed a few weeks back (8,500 miles) and I’ll now be going to this other dealership for service as well.

They have a special tool to remove the oil filter and it goes back on usually in the same position as it locks in if you do suspect they're not changing the filter ask for the old filter back

Yep, and it is probably over tightened and not properly torqued like mine was.

On my 2018 Tundra, they just did the first 5K servicing and they did not change the oil filter. They have a statement on the service sheet that they change oil at 10K or 1 year. They didn't claim to do the oil change and I am OK with that. The did service the 2 recalls and a few other things. Toyota Care is just basically inspecting the vehicle and doing minor servicing and that's about it.

it's also a pain in the ass to remove the skid plate on a tundra and a lot of times that dealers skip the oil filter because of that not necessarily the dealer's fault just a tech being lazy that's why if I get my oil changed somewhere else I ask for my filter back are a watch them do the service

This. Stop kidding yourself. And anyone else who's reading this and is "on the fence." It ain't worth it. And this is BEFORE we get to the horrid aspects of the insane collateral damage that others are reporting above.

If I can do some 250 Toyota vehicle oil changes myself (since 1985) then you can do one too yourself. Then two. Then three. Then.............NEVER EVER WONDER IF IT'S DONE RIGHT.

DIY and remove the worry/hassles of the stealer.

On a side note, do not wait 10k miles to change your oil. No more than 5k max! Or, 3k max for ‘heavy service’.
