Lower inner front fender plastic; keep or no?

With my new wheels I'm rubbing the lower inner front fender plastics at full lock



After some trimming


After reinstall and testing I still need to trim some more.

My question is as I'm removing material, the panels are getting flimsier. Seems to me they'll flap around pretty good on the road. So I'm wondering after all the required trimming, and with the possibility of them flapping around, whats the benefit to keeping them? What has everyone else done/decided? Pluses and minuses?

Well this is what I did. Hacked my stock units to shit so they would fit. Wasnt happy with how they looked or the rigidity so I bought new OEM units took my time relocated a bit and now they look factory. I'd keep them if you can. Keeps the fogs dry.

 

I would try to keep as much as possible, it helps keep some junk out.

Mine got trimmed and then I pushed it back so it’s behind those 2 bolts that are sticking up and haven’t had a problem. Like other say keep as much as u can so u don’t have random things going in there

 

Happen to know the part numbers for the OEM replacements for a 3rd gen? Mine got destroyed as well

the shop that installed my suspension fabricated a piece/cover for that exact location. They're installing the cover today. I'll post a pic when done

You can use kydex that is thicker to mold another yourself.
I did that for my search and rescue truck.

Just get a heat gun and warm it slowly. once it is warm enough to flex place it over the other one and wait for it to cool.
Drill the holes and you have a custom cover for a couple bucks

Best tool I ended up using was a box cutter/razor blade. It cut the plastic like a hot knife thru butter so I was able to make cuts around the contours/bends of the panel allowing me to retain most of its rigidity. Still dont like how floppy it seems where its held on by the plastic rivet, but thats a function of the rivet and not the panel. Was like that before so I assume it'll be ok now.

I took mine off last summer intending to cut and reinstall but haven’t gotten around to that yet. I agree that the cover appears to be designed to protect the fog lights from dirt and mud and such. I’ve taken it off-road and driven through some mud since last summer and luckily the fogs have held up. Granted, not the ideal way to protect and maintain the fogs, but laziness and procrastination have gotten the better of me.

 

I was able to heat and trim mine so that I got no rubbing but your method looks like a real good one as well. Thanks for posting the pics.

 

Not OEM look but works. Re-routed the wiring to the side.

 

This is exactly what I was going for. Was trying to have a guy fab one up for me but he doesn’t have access to a tundra and he’s not local. How much did they charge?

 

Wasn't charged for the actual part. I'm assuming since it was the same shop I bought the tires, mount/alignment, had suspension installed, and had the CMC done that the cost for all of that work covered these fog light covers.

Let me know if you want a photo of just the cover. It's pretty easy to remove.

 

@smy yea, I’d love to see if you have a photo of it. If you could, ask that shop if they’re willing to make another set and for how much. If not, no worries.

 

is this for all third gens? got a used 2017 and it never came with these.

 

Christophlim - Yes, the part numbers will fit your truck.

I heated my originals and did not like the outcome, so I ordered new ones off ebay. I did not trim the new ones, took the bolts and screws out of the bottom of the bumper and shoved the bottom of the plastic forward several inches. No more rub, and I still have my splash guards.
