Anyone who is adding an aftermarket amp to your factory system but is wanting to keep the factory head unit I have a signal processor that is only 2 months old. I don’t need it any longer as I am installing a new head unit. So if anyone is interested please let me know.

Any suggestions on how to get aftermarket stereo to fit in dash kit? I ordered one specifically for my truck and the aftermarket stereo is too big to slide inside the dash kit. Also, I cant figure out for the life of me how to mount the new stereo back into the dash. Am I supposed to use the Din cage that came with the stereo or use the original mounting brackets? Either way, I can’t figure out how to attach any of the brackets to the stereo bc none of the holes line up. Finally, any tips for securing all the wiring behind the stereo so that I can easily slide it in? It looks like a enormous rat’s nest? BTW- I have always installed my own car stereos in the past and have never had problems like I have had with my tundra. Been a nightmare. Thanks for all the help for my previous posts and any advice now.

That metra kit looks like it sucks. I got Metra 99-8252 from crutchfield im going to try it but people seem to prefer the Scosche kit to the Metra's. If i dont like the metra I'll switch it out with Scosche. Im actually going to be doing the same this weekend. I remember watching Five Star Car Audio install a new Hu on a Tundra and he mentions that Metra doesnt come with hardware, you have to re-use the old hardware. He put the metra kit around the new HU and re-screwed everything together, then put the whole thing in just like the old entune HU came out.

This is with the metra kit and looks pretty good once installed and the fit is descent as well. Only thing I didn’t prefer was that you don’t use the sleeve or the face trim piece That comes with the aftermarket radio.....with the metra the radio doesn’t slide in to the kit, you have to put the radio in face first from the back and secure it to the face plate...instructions say use the screws that come with you radio but for securing the side brackets to the front face bracket those didn’t work so I had to use some tap screws that i had and they fit but then I used the radio screws to secure the chassis to the side brackets. Using the sleeve and the trim piece that comes with the radio looks more finished to me but can’t use those with the metra, not sure how others would work.

I installed a kenwood with a idatalink maestro RR and didnt need a voltage step down. Maestro RR with a to2 harness and it was plug and play. I also got an antenna adapter. I did not get the usb/aux or satellite adapters. Everything works seamlessly

just got my mechless ILX-W650 from Alpine with Carplay. $299 on crutchfield with the metra kit included. can't beat that price. super slim and has carplay (wired but I got the usb hidden in center console with phone so it charges all the time since Waze sucks so much battery).

the new 2019 W650 is selling like hot cakes right now.

That's a really good price for a name brand stereo with android auto and CarPlay. Does it have an idatalink maestro port in the back?

no but it has the steering wheel stereo control 3.5mm jack connector. I have a 2012 so I don't really need the Maestro. I do use the AXXESS AWSC-1 though.

I figured for $299 I'll get a new Alpine stereo with Carplay :) works for me.

So one issue that I had is that the display in the counter IP is no longer displaying distance to empty on and the maestro is not reading fuel level either. My truck actually wouldn’t start late last night until I jumped it so I took it in for that and the missing information on the center display and they just told me it was due to the aftermarket radio. Any one else seeing this??

No issues with my miles to empty reading. My kenwood does not show fuel % on the gauge cluster though. I'm gonna reprogram it to show something else in its place

The head unit doesn't have anything to do with the MPG/other trip info in the dash... The only options you lose with an aftermarket stereo, without adding a Maestro, are the nav and media information panes. Sounds like you may have another issue going on.

It will give me the trip fuel economy after the trip is complete but directly under the digital speed readout it doesn’t have a distance to empty and it says refuel now. The dealership said it was due to the aftermarket radio (or the factory radio not being installed). When I was jumping the batter I also notice I had a coolant leak on the radiator hose and they don’t have that simple part in stock so supposed to be ready tomorrow....how do you not have a radiator hose in stock??

The DTE issue happened after I installed the Radio......just a coincidence?

But the battery also went dead so was hoping it had something to do with that and would be able to be reset.

It may be an issue due to the installation of the aftermarket HU, but the HU itself would not cause the DTE issue. There's no interface between the stereo and the ECU, unless you have a Maestro or miswired the HU somehow. Might want to double check your harness wiring. I had initially missed the amp turnon lead, so I had to pull the HU out and check that and the other pairs.

Yes I do have the maestro and it’s wired up according to what their wiring digest said and all the harness clips matched up. Only thing that didn’t hook up, there were 2 cable on the back of the radio that looked like satellite radio...both black wires but one had a white head and the other was a black head. Called Crutchfield and they said that the white one was the factory GPS plug in. There was no place for it so i zip tied it off, other than that everything on the radio works.

Ah ok, I missed your earlier post where you had said you had the Maestro. If you remove the stereo completely, including the Maestro, does the DTE still have issues? I don't know anything about the Maestro programming process, so can't comment on anything to check there.

I meant to post this earlier....One thing if you want to use Apple car play on the Kenwood you need to make sure and use the correct one of the 2 USB jacks on the back. I tested both and you need to make sure the black one is accessible to plug in your lightning cable because the other one will not load, it will only play music files. I didn’t see anywhere in the instructions where that was called out so wanted to share.

After much trial and error, was finally able to figure out to mount the damn thing. Turns out that I only had to use the factory brackets, mount the stereo, and then place the dash kit over the front of the stereo and then put the dashboard and console back together. I still can’t get over how tedious it was on this vehicle. One last question, is there anyway to get the dashboard around the new stereo/dash kit to snap in more securely? It will stay put but feels loose when touched. Thanks

You have to use the plastic side brackets to tie in the face bracket from the back.

After installing the new stereo I have learned that evidently you no longer can watch Netflix via lightning cable hdmi adapter unless it is an older stereo with an included hdmi input. I purchased a converter adapter for the purpose of doing this and after several attempts was unable to accomplish this. I went to several car stereo places and they all confirmed this as well. Anyone know of any hacks for a stereo that doesn’t have a built in hdmi input?

Finished up the Kenwood head unit install, got the microphone place, and routed the Apple car play USB into the center console. Came out pretty clean.

That’s interesting... can you not use Car Play with the factory USB connection below the A/C controls?

Not according to Crutchfield. I didn’t actually try the factory adapter to use CarPlay but only one of the USB inputs on the Kenwood works for CarPlay so I used the factory plug with adapter for the one that wouldn’t do CarPlay and use that for music on a thumb drive. The other is the one i routed into the console to use for CarPlay.

I did the same: routed USB out of HU to inside console so my phone stays hidden while charging and using carplay. carplay works great but hoping for some more bells and whistles on next Apple release hopefully.

Yeah didn’t think I would use CarPlay all that much but it’s pretty cool, and my daughter likes to control the radio when she is in the truck and she really likes it already as well.....she gets to play her Apple Music and it charges her phone! 14 yo girls and their iPhones makes for an interesting ride sometimes
