Considering dumping my 3rd gen Tacoma for a clean 2004 Tundra DC

Found an extremely clean 2004 Tundra Limited, DC 4WD, garage kept, one owner, 155k miles, new timing belt at 120k, regular maintainence, new tires, not a scratch or dent, its immaculate (AZ truck). Just looking to downgrade from a payment and something more classic, clean and when things were built with quality, my only concern is the mileage, though I know these trucks are bulletproof (besides frame and a few other little things) if taken care of. Thoughts?

Looks like a nice find. You won’t regret upgrading from the Tacoma. Nobody ever is unhappy with the upgrade. Those are low miles for the 1st Gen Tundra. My 2002 is running better than new and the V8 still has great power.

If your potential find has been well maintained, you’ll be a happy camper. A bit bigger outside (and way bigger inside for some reason) and way more power for tow/haul.

Two friends bought the Tacoma after riding in my 02’ and ended up selling after a year and both bought new 2nd and 3rd Gen Tundras. My truck is still better!

It looks very clean. I wouldn't let the mileage scare you. We've now seen two Tundra's with the 4.7L hit 1,000,000 miles on the original engine and transmission.

I would just make sure you really take your time looking it over. Check the frame thoroughly for rust. Just because it's in AZ now doesn't mean it always was.

    Good luck!

I just dumped my 2017 Tacoma for a 2006 Tundra and couldn’t be happier. I didn’t hate my 17 Tacoma but the tranny sucks and so does the monthly payment. Found a fairly clean Tundra with 98000 miles and so far I’m in love. It’s spacious and the V8/tranny drives like it’s supposed too. The only thing I wish it had was a timing chain and rear locker. MPG has been about the same as the Tacoma with a lift and 32s.

I had two first gen tacos (99 and 03). I would never ever buy a turd gen taco. In fact after the 2009 Lexus GX470 and 2009 T4R, I'm not really interested in much modern Toyota offerings.

Lol, tundras.com is so much better than tacomaworld...

Think I'm stuck with my turd, made my bed and now I have to lay in it. Just can't stomach taking the $3k hit and going from 2.9% interest rate to 7% (don't want to rob my savings just to move trucks).

Thanks for the input though gents.

you definitely came to a place where we all will heavily steer you to the Tundra.

Mine has 220k on it and I am putting well north of $3k into fun mods. I love these trucks. Easy to work on for the most part. Plenty of power. Plenty of room.

Plus that DC you're looking at is a show-stopper in my opinion. I wouldn't hesitate. Run and buy that thing!

It’s not a huge savings. It would cover about $7000 of the $15k price. I’m actually about to separate from active duty in July and the savings was my safety net even though I’ll be living at home rent free and going to school full time for nursing.

Right! Garage kept, one owner, AZ truck, toytec coil overs with remote resi’s. It’s making it hard to pass and looks better than my cement DC TRDOR taco.

Respectfully, I really disagree. Not having an emergency fund is why most Americans are so in debt. I think something like 60% of Americans couldn't come up with $500 in the event of an emergency. If you're prioritizing truck mods over an emergency fund or paying off debt then you should really reevaluate.

Pay off all debt first. Build a 6 month emergency fund(my wife and I have around 12-15 months saved) then spend money on toys.

I was curious if you felt the Tundra felt more solid than the Tacoma? I was looking at a very low mile 2011 Tacoma, and it felt like I was inside of a tin can. Plus i just couldn't get comfortable for some reason.

Oh ya way more solid. It’s the most comfortable Toyota truck I’ve been in. The seats are more comfortable and lots of space to move around.

    Good advice.

Do you ever wonder if the stupid people are the ones not in debt?

Do you consider tax (on ownership) a debt?

Do you believe in tax/subsidy bailouts (smart people paying for stupid peoples mistakes/laziness)? (See #1).

    I ponder these questions daily.

I've owned about 8 Toyota "trucks" (1st gen 4runner, 3 1st gen Tacomas, 3 first gen Tundras and 1 3rd gen Tacoma). I went from a 2006 Tundra to a 2017 Tacoma and hated it...less than 2 years later I sold the Tacoma and bought a cherry 2006 Tundra and am happier than a pig in shit. I do not regret it at all. My Tacoma was paid for, so I essentially rented it for $9K for about 2 years...but that includes all the taxes as well. So, as much as I disliked the 3rd gen (which was ALOT, horrible engine/trans combo), I can't complain about the stupid high resale. Good luck with your decision.

The 3rd one is called Socialism. And a growing percentage of the country does believe in it, unfortunately.

Sell your truck out right. Buy a $2500 beater till school is over and save your GI Bill BAH. Then when you graduate, buy the truck you want.

That's a very nice/clean looking trk. The factors I look at when buying are cost and the vehicle's book value. Dealerships look at blk book value instead of my preference being NADA.
    https://www.nadaguides.com/

How much is the owner asking for it? You try working down the price or is the owner firm on price?

Most dealers use Manheim for wholesale value. "If I go to the auction, how much can I get it for". That's the numbers they use.
    Taco's hold alot of value.
