Oh I'm sure there are possibilities out there but my family keeps me grounded to the San Francisco area. As it is, I make a decent living (wouldn't know it with the cost of living here) which is great, but money isn't everything. I value my time with my family most of all. Now if I were single it might be different.

Good luck in making your decision. I know it's not an easy one to make.

Ditto on everything you said. Family time comes first. Especially more so as you get older. Hold on to every minute.

I'm currently a contract worker at whidbey island working on T56 turbo props. No boat but two Harleys an old 1980 dyna super glide and an 03 road king classic. I was in Misawa and Yokosuka. Loved Misawa and hated] Yokosuka. I think because of the large population. I don't like big cities.

I never got the chance to make it to Misawa. Whidbey Island area is nice, at least I think so. I like the NW anyways.

Man, I can't wait to retire. I'm 31 but my body is at least 50. Hoping my knees and back can hold out for another 10 years. Congrats to you all who dealt with endless piles of bullshit and made it to retirement. I assumed during my first enlisment that staying in is the easiest option, boy was I wrong.

I've done 18 1/2 years as an LEO, with EMT, SAR, and firefighter duties mixed in to some extent depending on where I've worked. Right now I have a nice mix of all those in one job. Looking at possibly attending Advanced EMT and Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator school this year.

not the easiest, but damn sure will be worth it when you do retire. Not many people can be 38-40 years old, and drawing a military retirement to supplement the salary of their new job.

Once you hit your 20, it's all gravy. I thought for sure I would retire on my 20th anniversary, but now that the time has come and gone, I'm just padding the $$. Plus, to be honest, I'm a little scared. I've been doing this since I was 18yo., I don't really know much else

US Army Dentist. I have a 4 yr commitment. I'm over halfway thru.

So much I love about army dentistry (mostly taking care of "the guys") and a lot I don't like either - which I don't have any control over. The things I don't have control over, I would in private practice so that's what I'll be doing when I'm finished. I can still treat DOD members and veterans. And treat them to the best of my ability- not how someone thinks a division/ corps as a whole should be treated.

I raised my right hand twice. The first time was for my patients.

I've been looking at FEMA job posting on usajobs for a little bit now. I got a lead on a DLA position that works hand in hand with FEMA. I may drop retirement papers real soon if it looks like this lead actually comes through

Thanks to all of you that serve or have served. I volunteered to help the following charity, and have donated a fair amount of money to this cause. If you live in WA or Oregon, there will be an event by this non profit in May at Bend Oregon, and in Cle Elum Washington in September. The events this year are going to now include motorcycles, side/sides and jeeps/trucks.

So last night at the broncos game i was talking with the guy in front of me. Found out he was previously in the marines. I thanked him for his service and told him that i am very thankful because i would not be able to do what he does. He said that means alot to him for me to thank him. Well after some BSing he said that he had to head-butt me. He said it was a term of endearment for marines. Is there truth in the head-butt?

Hmm. Don't know then. He was drunk but was excited that i was thanking him so much. He was 40 yo. Said he really wanted to head-butt me because he liked and respected me. Oh well. I will just continue to feel special either way.
