I'm seriously considering retrax bed cover because it can lock in any position. But I'm curious as to how much bed space it takes up. And is it something that I can install myself? Any help from you guys would be appreciated.

The container takes up about a foot on top of your bed and is about 10" deep. I installed mine myself. It's a little bit awkward and would have been easier to have someone help set it on top but it wasn't a big deal.

I have a retrax pro xr.

    I really like it.

I installed mine by myself. I did have the kid next door help set the canister in the truck. Took about an hour to install. I had the unit drop shipped directly to my driveway from Retrax.

I’ve had it installed now for 8 years. FYI - I have a Dual Cab , not a Crewmax

Go with the Retrax and don't look back. Ive had diamondback hard covers, several versions of back flips, etc. The Retrax is light well made and functional. I have the Powertrax Pro MX model which is all aluminum and motorized with a push button remote. A great leak proof cover. The cover mentioned is the exact same less the power functionality. I did a solo install. Was not an issue for me. Best of Luck!

Does the retrax rattle around when you hit bumps or rough roads?. Seems like it would have a little bit of play in the cover and make some noise. Looks good though and convenient without have to fold.

If concerned about bed space check out the revolver X2 / X4. Rolls on top, cannot lock multi position but like my X4 on work truck.

Had a retractable, that function seem to not work so well after a few years.

Mine doesn't. It's pretty tight. I have the Pro, so it's aluminum and fairly heavy.

I'm not familiar with the "one" so couldn't answer that.
My Retrax has Zero rattles as the cannister box is self contained and secure. The arms or bed brackets on each side utilize solid all aluminum clamps that lock the unit in place. Doesn't move or rattle at all. The opening and closing is smooth. Retrax Really is the standard by which all retractables can be measured and made in the USA.

I’ve only had my retrax for about 4 months or so (that’s how long I’ve had the truck!) but I absolutely love it. It was expensive but worth the money in my opinion.

I'm thinking through bed cover options... could you guys post a pic of what it looks like when fully retracted? Or maybe a pic underneath from the tailgate?

My 2014 tundra came with the poly-carbonate Retrax cover installed and I have had issues with it.
The locking clamp part has broken (retrax shipped me a new one)
It constantly binds on me when trying to open it (I have completely remounted it with no improvement)
it shifts at the tailgate and lets water in
I just noticed 2 cracks in the poly-carbonate cover that are also letting water in

Yeah I would advise against any Poly or plastic cover. Anyway here are a few requested pics.

I really wanted a retrax, but I have the short bed on my crewmax and I just couldn't bring myself to give up a foot of bed space. If I had a full bed, I would have done it in a heartbeat.

I really liked mine for the time I had it... eventually, the tracks started falling off/out of the rails. I would tighten and adjust the rails, but couldn't keep the tracks in. I drive a couple shitty roads on the way to work, but not sure if that could work as an excuse.

other than that, it was awesome and didn't really notice it in the bed

    A bunch
Taking up the 10" up front, combined with the constant adjusting to keep it flush to the tailgate got me to buy a cheap BakFlip to replace it. The side with the lock stayed just fine, but the cover would twist and eventually not be waterproof on the other side, if I left it long enough I could even see into the bed. Since I care about security more than waterproofing that gap was a huge issue. Getting the cheap BakFlip was just a temporary solution until I can get enough money to buy a Diamondback

Has anybody with the retrax found a product that could be used as a toolbox underneath the canister in the front of the truck bed? I have a retrax and would like to use that space under the canister for tool storage Is there anything out there on the market short of buying a custom tool chest? Running a Husky toolbox from Home Depot now. Won't slide under the retrax cannister and eats up a lot of bed space

Not sure. The cover got brittle from the sun, then cracked down the slats on both sides in several places. It would get stuck when trying to unroll, and that would make it worse. Tried repairing and lasted a little while. Got stuck, and gave up. Out it went. Contacted Retrax and they offered a replacement cover without other parts for $300. Didnt want to bother trying again.
