I have a Black 2016 Tundra that I want to get rid of the god awful chrome bumpers on the front and back. I have thought about buying custom painted OEM ones, but I like the idea of saving money and doing it myself.

Has anyone successfully painted these themselves with plasti dip or something else and had success? Are there any good write up's on the best way to do this to get it to match the color the best? Is plasti-dip a good way to go about it? Will it match the glossy black on the truck?

New here, any advice would be great.

    Thanks!

I think lots of people have had issues with getting anything to stick to the chrome.

And as far as I can tell, the cost/time to prep the chrome adequately usually adds up to “why not just buy the finished product”.

Can’t wait to see how it turns out and holds up if you do DIY it though!

Many have Plastidipped and can look good. Always temporary IMO.

Key is prep, need to find a good primer for chrome. I think there is some stuff out there. Once primered paint away.

Plastidip holds up fine as long as u clean it good and do light coats at a time. I used 1 can for the front and 1 can for the back just kept doing coats with a 10-15 min drying period. I’m going on a year and I’m not complaining at all

I put some Monstaliner (paint/brush on bed-liner) on my bumper ends and it has held up AWESOME!! Not a single chip, scratch or blemish on them and I've wheeled my truck HARD.

Step 1 - 85 grit sand paper on a random orbital
Step 2 - Tape off the fogs and sensors
Step 3 - Spray on Bulldog Adhesion Promoter
    Step 4 - Mix up the Monstaliner (it's a 2-part "epoxy")
Step 5- 1st coat of liner
    Step 6 - 2nd coat of Monstliner

This stuff is TOUGH Highly recommend.

My dad painted mine with OEM 202 code black. The prep work was really key - POR 15 epoxy sealer and then POR flat black primer, then 202 black with clear coat.

This looks great! Where did you get the paint? I am assuming I would have to purchase online?

This looks super sick. I might want to do this, as I have a front grill guard that has the same finish on it. BAD ASS!

Best was the cost!! Maybe $60 all-in (ok, maybe $70 if you include the paint brushes etc) If you want less texture, use a smooth "cabinet" roller from Lowes/Depot.

I went the plastidip route and it’s held up fine. The only touch up I have had to do was when I got a little too close with the power washer. It will work until I get all the other mods done I want.

I have to be honest , my dad is a professional painter by trade and he had everything in his garage at his house. You can buy all this stuff from Industrial Finishes , but I dont know the cost.
I will say take your time on the prep work and pay attention to the nooks and crannies - that is where the paint will start to peel off and chip away.

You plasti dipped the fender flares in your profile pic? How did you get the gloss look?

Wiped with alcohol the 4 coats of PD and 4 coats of glossifier in the bumper caps. The fender flares are painted. Out of town right now but will pm you a pic of how the caps turned out. It’s not a match but looks good enough to me.
