Really wait until 10,000 miles for the first oil change?

Ok, so 2 years Toyota Care. The schedule calls for first service at 5k, but the first oil change isn't until 10k.

I'm torn if I even want to bring my truck to the dealer anyway. The nearest one is over a half hour away. I get free tire rotations at the shop near my house and I figure I'll just get the oil changes there. In 2 years with Toyota only changing the oil every 10,000 I'll probably just qualify for one, two at most, free oil changes. The price tag of 2 synthetic oil changes (about $140) may be offset by the inconvenience of going to the dealer.

I'm between 4 and 5k right now. I'm thinking of getting my first rotation done at 5,000 and having them change the oil.

    What do you think?

Some change oil at 10k miles, others much less. Your decision. Toyota engineers say 10k miles.

Man I need to go to your oil change place, mine charges $110, don't go there anymore and do it myself. I changed my oil at about 1500 miles and rear gear oil. Mobil 1 and royal purple in the gears

5-6K here. Same for tire rotation. Sometimes less on the tires.

Ideally, I think 500 - 1,000 for the first oil change, not more than 5k. Then every 7-8k like
Law323 said. But that's just me and I'm no Toyota engineer.

It's 10k/1 year, whichever comes first. You can get both your oil changes even if you don't get to 20k. I used my first one yesterday at 4K.

Unless its a Flex Fuel motor, then its 5K / 6 mos. Had mine done a month ago with 4,500 miles.

Thanks guys. Just to be clear, everyone is using strictly synthetic oil, correct?

Modern engines are manufactured with a much higher precision than engines made decades ago. One of the main reasons why oil needs to be changed is it gets burnt. More better quality piston rings helps prolong the life of your oil.

Question: For those of you that do it every 10k miles or so, how many miles on your truck?

I ask because I do it every 5k on the dot and I'm at 117k miles and it still drives better than when my F150 was brand new.

Oh and also, ROTATE TIRES EVERY 5k, had to buy two new tires for my wife's Pilot b/c Honda said to wait till the Oil Change light goes off which is about 8k to 10k miles.

I'm currently at 52K and have always had the dealer do the sked maintenance as called for with oil changes every 10K. I was going to do them myself once the "freebies" ran out, but decided I just didn't want the hassle. I'm 40 miles away from the nearest dealer, but it gives me an excuse to go into town.

I change the oil at recommended intervals - just took the truck in for the 5K service and all they did was basically rotate the tires. Had a VW TDI and the oil chnge interval was 10K and I never changed it early and at 200K (when I sold it) it still ran great and didn't burn any oil. Synthetic oul makes all the difference. If you are worried get a sample and get it analyzed
