Last year I was supporting a joint exercise in an African country with USMC, and we had a down day. So, me and some of my AF buddies were just relaxing on the seawall and BS'ing with one of the USMC GySgt while a whole slew of Marines were doing PT. They were puking and cramping up and just kept going. That GySgt was telling us that the Marines have to do all this PT bc if they have any sort of downtime, they'll do stupid shit and get in trouble.

Then, while we were tearing down tents and cleaning equipment getting ready for the customs agents to inspect our shit, the USMC LtCol brought us (AF) a case of beer and said he couldn't give it to his guys bc they'd get stupid. Sweet, free beer for us. Haha.

In my humble opinion the USMC is the only professional fighting force that has stuck true to its traditions. My time spent with the USAF embarrassed me to think of it as a fighting force. After coming back from a Desert Storm deployment our tom cats were sitting on the flight line looking rough, black streaks on them, patchy paint, just looking like they were rode hard and put away wet. We had an USAF F-15 strike eagle park on our flight line next to our war weary tomcats and were amazed at how pristine the F-15 was and let the pilot know how nice that AC looked. He told us not to let appearances fool us as the AC was far out of weight and balance due to all of the paint on the AC. He even said something that shocked me, He said, "In the Air Force it is more important to look good than be good." He was not smiling when he told us that.
We went to Fairchild AFB to do some stuff up there and everyone was on a first name basis. E-3's calling B-2 Bomber pilots by their first name just made all of us, (combination of Navy and Marines) feel weird. While on that same base I could not figure out the uniforms, this was in the old woodland camo days. Some guys had black t-shirts under the blouses, others had green. Some had brown t-shirts. Some of the camo uniforms had ranks on the sleeves, some uniforms had collar devices, and yet other uniforms had neither, they had a leather patch above one of the breast pockets. I asked about this as I could not figure out the uniforms and was told, "In the Navy you have traditions, in the Air Force we have hobbies. Uniforms is a hobby.
I have more and could go on, but, I will leave it there for now. Standing by to receive flack.

No flack from me, I think everyone has a certain amount of pride for the branch they chose, and that leads to some negative views of the others. I think that's a good thing. In the end, it's one team one fight. I too, could go on and on about the other services.

I remember that black Velcro patch days, but they were phasing out while I always in basic. Now, only aircrew have patches on their flight suits. I'm not sure about the different colored tshirts, maybe that was before my time (I've only been in 21yrs). When we wore bdu's, it was always black tshirts only, even our dcu's were black shirts, and now with the ABU's, only sand colored shirts.

As far as rank goes, that makes no sense. In the USAF, on bdu/abu, ALL enlisted rank is on the sleeve, ALL officer rank is on the collar. Dress blues, it's the same way, except SNCOs can wear shoulder rank like officers if they choose.

I am proud and honored I was able to serve this great country. I am even more proud of those that continue to serve. I had the honor to attend the Marine
Corps Birthday celebration today and their traditions make me proud to know and call Marines my friends.

God bless America and all the ships at sea!

And what you said above about not standing is exactly why I have not watched any NFL games this year. Until Roger Goodell enforces some type of sanctions against the knuckle heads that continue to kneel or raise a fist during the national anthem, I will do everything I can to not support the NFL or their sponsors. I know the NFL is scurrying around trying to figure out why viewership is down.

    RowdyRon,

I am in the same boat. But, I may not be able to load tactical aircraft any more, but I could still teach the young troops how to do it! That or fix weapons elevators. My old body is no longer as flexible as it used to be, but the mind is still sharp!
