I agree that making one out of metal that makes use of the space between the brackets would be much more labor intensive.

That said, it seems to a guy with ZERO plastic manufacturing experience (me) that the mold for the plastic one could be tweaked to utilize the space between the seat brackets and double (or come real close to it) the in-bin storage volume. It would require keeping two sizes of shipping boxes in stock though.

Can anyone confirm if footprints of long box and plastic bin are the same (and if I can upgrade from plastic to long box without needing a new carpet)?

I started out installing the plastic 3 bin, but ultimately wasn’t happy with the fit and finish. Earl sent me the long box and once I installed it I returned the plastic one. Biiiiig upgrade. Just do the metal one.

I really like the aluminum long box version, and might be inclined to pick it up even at the listed $700 but I'd be a lot closer to pulling the trigger on it if it were made out of the same 12 gauge steel that their $650 DC storage system is.

Sorry, I edited my last post right before you replied to it. I originally posted something along the lines of "Mind me asking what you got it for?" And yes, I meant $.

I think it’s $699. But Earl might have a forum coupon code for you

I have steel lids on mine that I had made. If we made the whole thing out of steel it would add an additional 120 lbs to the truck and the shipping would be horrendous. Not to mention we would have to put gas springs on the doors. I almost took my finger off when I dropped the long lid(In steel it weighs about 15 lbs.

Installed mine yesterday. Only thing I wasn’t impressed with is the paper instructions, and the video on the website, don’t do a very good job of explaining how far forward/backward to place the template. A simple photo would go a long ways. I think mine actually ended up a little too far back, but it still works just fine.

I like the idea of the longer single console, but the price point for it is what I struggle with.

There is. Lockerdown makes one for the CrewMax as well, but if you are struggling with the price point on ours, then you aren't even going to be in the ball park with theirs. Even if other manufacturers did make these, they are still not going to be inexpensive, in fact, they would probably cost more. There is a lot that goes into these. I can tell you from experience, that there is just as much design and manufacturing in our products as there are in those $1500-$3000 bumpers. The cutting, bending, welding etc, just not as much metal. We have priced these so they are not too expensive, and also so we can actually survive as a business. Not being defensive, just trying to explain that these are not just something that is fabricated in a garage, they are professionally manufactured.

Trust me I understand what goes into fabrication as I work on custom built furniture. With the time and precision that goes into things like this I get it. Just with a new born $ is tighter than before and while I would like to make this mod to store things out of the way so that I can fit more strollers, bags, etc when I have that cash I start contemplating this vs other mods like tires/headlights, etc. It is a great product, just can't fork over for it yet.

Love the long box, definitely a worthwhile product for these trucks.
